Liner Note Author: Tony Wilson . Photographer: David Gahr. Yes' debut album is surprisingly strong, given the inexperience of all those involved at the time. In an era when psychedelic meanderings were the order of the day, Yes delivered a surprisingly focused and exciting record that covered lots of bases (perhaps too many) in presenting their sound. The album opens boldly, with the fervor of a metal band of the era playing full tilt on "Beyond and Before," but it is with the second number, a cover of the Byrds' "I See You," that they show some of their real range. The song is highlighted by an extraordinary jazz workout from lead guitarist Peter Banks and drummer Bill Bruford that runs circles around the original by Roger McGuinn and company. "Harold Land" was the first song on which Chris Squire's bass playing could be heard in anything resembling the prominence it would eventually assume in their sound and anticipates in its structure the multi-part suites the group would later record, with its extended introduction and its myriad shifts in texture, timbre, and volume. And then there is "Every Little Thing," the most daring Beatles cover ever to appear on an English record, with an apocalyptic introduction and extraordinary shifts in tempo and dynamics, Banks' guitar and Bruford's drums so animated that they seem to be playing several songs at once. This song also hosts an astonishingly charismatic performance by Jon Anderson. There were numerous problems in recording this album, owing to the inexperience of the group, the producer, and the engineer, in addition to the unusual nature of their sound. Many of the numbers give unusual prominence to the guitar and drums, thus making it the most uncharacteristic of all the group's albums. [Its first decent-sounding edition anywhere came with the 1997 remastering by Atlantic.] ~ Bruce Eder Though Yes's name quickly became synonymous with '70s prog rock, their 1969 debut is a far cry from the epic vistas they would later explore. Like many '60s bands, they covered the Byrds (the metaphysical "I See You") and the Beatles ("Every Little Thing"). Inspired by the likes of Vanilla Fudge and Rotary Connection, they turned these songs inside out, radically changing the tempos and creating their own elaborate arrangements. The end results often bore little similarity to the songs' original versions. Guitarist Peter Banks (who eventually formed the very Yes-like aggregation Flash with Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye) has a much less cerebral approach than his successor Steve Howe. Though not as facile, Banks is alternately subtle and jazzy ("I See You") and electrifyingly riff-oriented ("Looking Around"). All the elements that would soon make Yes a household name were already in place, but YES is the sound of a great band gearing up for greater things. It's nevertheless an ultimately substantive and satisfying debut. Yes Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) A must for Yes fans This is a significant turning point on the Yes personnel and music. A must for Yes fans Submitted by gregbailey (Auckland, New Zealand) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Now you can actually hear it Yes' first album is Beatles-inspired psychedelic pop, pure and simple. Their covers of Every Little Thing by the Beatles and I See You by the Byrds are almost unrecognizable, but interesting in how far beyond their writers' vision they are. The real classics here are Beyond and Before, which shows off Yes' trademark harmones and Chris Squire's "lead bass" sound for the first time, the upbeat organ-driven "Looking Around", and the almost Association-like mini-epic "Survival". There are a few stumbles ("Sweetness" was probably pretty nice when it came out, but now its syrupy lyrics are just embarassing) but overall, this is a nice way to start a band. Previous recordings of this have been terrible (hissy and compressed sounding), but this remaster by Joe Gastwirt seems clearer than my old LP's even did, without all the crackle. You can certainly tell it was recorded 34 years ago, but not due to the sound quality.

YES- BEGINNINGS The first album by YES is a nice collections of tuneful songs- they are equally at home with originals and covers. Even many long time YES fans may not be as familiar, but the songs are enjoyable as any in their history. The strongest tracks for me are ' I SEE YOU, HAROLD LAND & LOOKING AROUND. Even in the beginning you can hear the quality, energy and originality in their playing. Do yourself a favor and buy this album, You won't be dissapointed. Yes
$19.10 Essentially a harder-rocking reprise of Every Picture Tells a Story, Never a Dull Moment never quite reaches the heights of its predecessor, but it's a wonderful, multi-faceted record in its own right. Opening with the touching, autobiographical rocker "True Blue," which finds Rod Stewart trying to come to grips with his newfound stardom but concluding that he'd "rather be back home," the record is the last of Stewart's series of epic fusions of hard rock and folk. It's possible to hear Stewart go for superstardom with the hard-rocking kick and fat electric guitars of the album, but the songs still cut to the core. "You Wear It Well" is a "Maggie May" rewrite on the surface, but it develops into a touching song about being emotionally inarticulate. Similarly, "Lost Paraguayos" is funny, driving folk-rock, and it's hard not to be swept away when the Stonesy hard rocker "Italian Girls" soars into a mandolin-driven coda. The covers -- whether a soulful reading of Jimi Hendrix's "Angel," an empathetic version of Dylan's "Mama, You Been ...

$7.96 Within a couple years, Canadian teenager Justin Bieber went from covering Usher on YouTube to working with Usher. An internet sensation from his renditions of several pop and pop-oriented R&B hits, he was still only 15 years old when he released this, his first album -- though it's more like an EP since it is contains only seven songs that are 25 minutes in duration. $16.19 2002 remastered reissue & CD debut of 1970 album featuring Ray Russell & Alex Harvey (vocals), who along with 11 additional musicians created an innovative & technically articulate form of experimental rhythm & blues. Includes six bonus tracks, 'Spine Cop' (alt. Version), 'Hole In Her Stocking' (alt. Version), 'Born In The City' (alt. Version), 'You To Lose' (alt. Version), 'Primrose Hill' & 'Return Of The Goddess'. Includes an informative booklet. Picture disc. Angel Air.
Rock Workshop includes: Ray Russell, Alex Harvey. Although history records the last years before Alex Harvey formed his Sensational Alex Harvey Band as a confused period marked by mere passing fancies, none of which came to fruition until he linked with the similarly flailing Tear Gas, he was in fact already blueprinting much of what SAHB would soon be accomplishing via the academically named, but blues-wailing nevertheless Rock Workshop. Harvey appears on just four of the eight songs on its debut album, but the presence of both a couple of subsequently familiar songs and a vocal workout to rival anything on Framed or Next establish them among his finest performances. A savage rearrangement of the traditional "Wade in the Water" and his own (with fellow Workshop-per Ray Russell) "Hole in Her Stocking" are both bruising R&B stampers, punctured by howling horns and a guitar riff, in the first-named case, that could have escaped from "Walk Don't Run," Blood, Sweat & Tears-style. Harvey himself is in breathtaking form, utterly undistinguishable from the showman who brought listeners "Vambo," and the only regret is that he is confined to just the four songs -- the remainder of Rock Workshop, while certainly a blistering blur of hot and sweaty jazz-soul-boogie, also sinks into anonymity by comparison, just another white English fusion band honking ...

$24.95 Author: Wislawa Szymborska. A running joke in the '90s had it that plenty of goth/industrial types ended up in rave culture, whether due to changing tastes or simply because of appreciation of punishing beats -- certainly the roots of so much techno in those styles had always been subculturally clear. So seeing someone like Thomas Brinkmann essentially create his own tribute to those roots with an art/goth album, When Horses Die, is both appropriate and intriguing -- and Brinkmann's hardly hiding it, with his first two thank yous in the liner notes going to Trent Reznor and Winston Tong. Tong himself provided the lyrics to the ruminative opener "Words," with Brinkmann's dark, dry voice speak-singing over minimal keyboards; with that as a clear signpost, When Horses Die proceeds to explore the kind of dark, poetic work in Tong's vein and others, with minimal textures refracted through an often beatless techno lens. The overlay of a slow surging drone and a clipped keyboard melody on "Spiral" and the soft, contemplative wash up and down of gentle synths on "Uselessness" shows how well he can use a simple touch to create a big effect. Most of what beats do appear suggest classic work on Crepuscule and similar labels -- the slow trudge pulse ...

Comparisons to Common and Kanye abounded after the album which featured the hit single “African Queen” received airplay in the U.S., U.K., Nigeria, and Ghana and was chosen as part of a compilation album with proceeds to aid in the fight against poverty.
