Either the finest record or the most overblown album in Yes' output. When it was released, critics called it one of the worst examples of progressive rock's overindulgent nature. Jon Anderson's fascination with Eastern religions never manifested itself more clearly or broadly, but one needn't understand any of that to appreciate the many sublimely beautiful moments on this album, some of the most gorgeous passages ever recorded by the band. ~ Bruce Eder
For prog rock's detractors, Yes's TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS is the genre's nadir. For admirers it is an artistic pinnacle. Whichever camp you're in, it is hard to deny the sheer chutzpah necessary to undertake this sprawling epic. Though broken up into four sections, TALES greeted 1973 listeners as a single composition spread across four sides of a double album. This was unprecedented in the world of mainstream rock. For the band, it was the closest they would ever come to a true fusion of classical structures and themes with rock-oriented instrumentation and sensibilities.
The lyrics are typically elliptical and spiritually oriented, and many a bad trip was probably launched by trying to interpret them. The real pleasure of this album lies in the elaborately textured, harmonically sophisticated interaction between keyboardist Rick Wakeman, guitarist Steve Howe, and highly melodic bassist Chris Squire. All three were at the peak of their instrumental prowess on TALES, and listening to them interact is like watching a fine athlete excelling at his chosen sport. I am still amazed at the powerful suggestions that are presented in this
recording! "Young Christains see it, from the beginning; Old people feel it,
that's what they're saying"..."Where does reason stop and killing just take over?"...These are just two examples of many profound thoughts that are musically presented with awesome power!
This is by far my favorite "Yes" record!

 Not The Best Yes Album, But...
yeah, i can't give this five stars. there are wonderful parts, and the music is generally beautiful. but it meanders a lot. and i take half a star off for the remembering, which is hard to listen to.

 The Worst Of the Best
It is inevidable after so many fantastic accomplishments some rain will fall yes is A #1 with me but not the Tales album it sums up where it belongs, this album is not even in the same place as the rest of my Yes collection as i listen to the others weekly i listen to this one only mabe twice a year, a disapointment in my opinion.

My All-Time Favorite!!!
This is indeed my all-time favorite Yes album, so any opinions I might give are totally biased! Therefore, the only advice I can give others who are possibly interested in this release or who might like their prog on the "adventurous" side is best described by three simple words -- "GET THIS ALBUM!!!"

Issued in 2008, MOMENTS. presents the veteran Belgian techno act Front 242 performing live. Given the band's mechanistic inclinations, the tracks on this set often sound like studio recordings, as evinced on the ominous "Until Death" (from 1988's FRONT BY FRONT) and the pulsing "Take One," a single dating back to the early `80s.
