Recording information: Polar Studios, Stockholm, Sweden. If And Then There Were Three suggested that Genesis were moving toward pop, Duke is where they leaped into the fray. Not that it was exactly a head-first leap: the band may have peppered the album with pop songs, but there was still a heavy dose of prog, as the concluding "Duke" suite made clear. This is modernist art rock, quite dissimilar to the fragile, delicate Selling England by the Pound, and sometimes the precision of the attack can be a little bombastic. Nevertheless, this is a major leap forward in distinguishing the sound of Genesis, the band, and along with a new signature sound come pop songs, particularly in the guise of "Misunderstanding" and "Turn It on Again." The first is a light, nearly soulful, heartache song, the latter is a thunderous arena rocker, and both showcase the new version of Genesis at its absolute best. The rest of the record comes close to matching them. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Genesis still have a credibility problem which at present just trails the present standing of ex-drummer/vocalist Philip Collins. Duke was the record that shed their 'heavy prog' image and found them beginning to loosen up. Collins had grown in confidence following Peter Gabriel's departure and the band immediately became much tighter musically. In addition to the hit singles "Duchess," the buoyant "Turn It On Again" and realism of a situation in "Misunderstanding," there is the painful honesty of "Please Don't Ask." There have been many bigger Genesis albums, but none have anywhere near as much heart.CMJ (1/5/04, p.6) - Ranked #9 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1980". Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.82) - "...The band's first UK Number 1 also marked their first use of a drum machine - the end of their 'classic' period for hardcore fans. Inspired by Collins' love of soul, 'Turn It On Again' has the band exploring funkier fields..." | Duke Music Review Average Rating: (3.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Smallcreep's Day, a better choice Genesis became a huge disgrace when Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel quit the band. However Mike Rutherford and original Genesis guitarist and writter, Anthony Phillips put out an awesome solo album called Smallcreep's Day in 1980. It is far better than this mess! When Tony Banks put out "A Curious Feeling", Phil Collins did Brand X "Product"(the song "Wal To Wal" is identical to the crap on the cd) in 1979, and Mike Rutherford put out Smallcreep's Day in 1980, Genesis was a done deal. GENESIS WAS OFFICIALLY BROKE UP IN 1979. When the leftover trio reformed in 1980 to put together Duke, the once great band formerly known as Genesis was no more. No new members, crappy live players, and the letting in of Phil's writting was a big mistake. A name means nothing without the music to back it, no matter who owns the name "Genesis". This is not a so called "Genesis" effort. Submitted by Wakeu P. Andsmellthecoffee (Stoopid Morons, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 6 of 6 found this helpful.
The beginning of the end for Genesis This was the first total sell-out album by Genesis. Get the earlier albums. They are much better. This is "pop". The old albums were "music". Submitted by a reviewer (Foothill Ranch, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 4 of 5 found this helpful.
This is not the band Genesis I feel sorry for the Genesis fans that had to endure the fiasco of the leftover trio. What you have here is a ripoff. Submitted by knowles (halifax RI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 5 of 7 found this helpful.
Not on Par To be fair there's not that much of the Phil Collins fronted Genesis to like, apart from Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering. And Then There Were Three has a couple of reasonable songs on it, but after that Genesis basically became a vehicle for Phil Collins to cash in on his solo success, sort of an extra source of income really, and as a result the music suffered badly. Some 70's rock bands like Yes, or Blue Oyster Cult faired a little better during the 80's, but only just. Genesis on the other hand really went to the Cash-In Bin real quick.
As for the Duke album, well it was one in a series of albums best forgotten. Submitted by Al. (Hunter Valley, NSW, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 4 of 6 found this helpful.
Genesis is now a boring and slow band... What's going on with Genesis?? if you want to get bored hear this album, well, this album is better than the trio's intro "...And Then There Were Three", but is still a piece of crap, no funny songs, no faster, the only song I like is "Turn It On Again", don't buy this album, is a waste of money and funny time. Duke
$18.95 This groundbreaking CD managed to change the tide for Haitian music and Caribbean women in particular. Emeline Michel won awards for producing the album as well as for album of the year, setting a precedent for the too rarely heard voice of women in Caribbean music. Establishing Michel's position as Haiti's queen of song, Cordes et Ame is a brilliant collection of tunes exploring traditional Haitian rhythms such as compas and adding touches of jazz, bossa nova, and samba. Michel's rich, supple vocals effortlessly pour over the tunes, which document the joy, hope, and struggle of Haitian culture. With effervescent, peppy songs such as "Fo M Ale" as well as sultry offerings like "Ecoute-Moi," all sung in Haitian Creole, Cordes et Ame skillfully transcends language and musical boundaries. ~ Rosalind Cummings-Yeates
"This is the definitive Haitian "World Beat" album...On top of a strong 'racine' [roots] bed....are layers of zouk, beguine, Cuba, Latin America and Brazil...the vocal range and intonation emit a sensual warmth suggestive of the 'whiskey' tinged 'velvet fog' quality attributed to Mel Torme along with a discernable touch of Edith Piaf." -The Haitian Times, June 26/July 4, 2000"Gorgeous new Emeline Michel CD is worth the search...she layers piano, percussion instruments such as congas, bongos and maracas, and violin, but they don't clash. Instead she leaves welcome space to breath...Michel's songs merge native Haitian compas and rara with jazz, pop, bossa nova and samba elements and her production is near flawless."-Miami Herald, July 21, 2000"Cordes et Âme by the reigning queen of Haitian song...marks a return to roots...almost angelic in its beauty". -Beat Magazine, Vol.19#3 2000"every minute of [Cordes et Ame] ... was worth the wait... a wonderful combination of [Emeline's] soothing, but powerful, nuanced and ...

$12.29 Personnel: Joe Satriani (guitar, harmonica, keyboards); Galen Henson (guitar); Dave LaRue (bass guitar); Jeff Campitelli (drums). No stranger to live recordings, both with his G3 tours and his solo concerts, hard-rock guitar hero Joe Satriani sets this two-disc collection of performances apart from its predecessors by drawing heavily from 2006's SUPER COLOSSAL. In addition to the stomping title track of that album and the melancholy "Made of Tears," Satch runs through deft, wire-tight versions of classics from his extensive back catalogue, including the blistering ...
