Duke showcased a new Genesis -- a sleek, hard, stylish trio that truly sounded like a different band from its first incarnation -- but Abacab was where this new incarnation of the band came into its own. Working once again with producer Hugh Padgham, the group escalated the innovations of Duke, increasing the pop hooks, working them seamlessly into the artiest rock here. And even if the brash, glorious pop of "No Reply at All" -- powered by the percolating horns of Earth, Wind & Fire, yet polished into a precise piece of nearly new wave pop by Padgham -- suggests otherwise, this is still art rock at its core, or at least album-oriented rock, as the band works serious syncopations and instrumental forays into a sound that's as bright, bold, and jagged as the modernist artwork on the cover. They dabble in other genres, lacing "Me and Sarah Jane" with a reggae beat, for instance, which often adds dimension to their sound, as when "Dodo" rides a hard funk beat and greasy organ synths yet doesn't become obvious; it turns inward, requiring active listening. Truly, only "No Reply at All," the rampaging title track (possibly their hardest-rocking song to date), and the sleek and spooky "Man on the Corner" (which hides a real melancholy heart underneath its glistening surface) are immediate and accessible -- although the Mockney jokes of "Who Dunnit?" could count, it's too much of a geeky novelty to be pop. The rest of Abacab is truly modern art rock, their last album that could bear that tag comfortably. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
At the dawn of the '80s, many '70s prog-rockers (Yes, Rush, etc.) trimmed away the musical fat in an attempt to keep current. Genesis's sonic reduction was an unprecedented aesthetic and commercial success. Though traditionalists cried foul, ABACAB was in fact more inventive and memorable than its comparatively leaden predecessor DUKE.
The R&B rhythms and punchy Earth, Wind & Fire horns on "No Reply At All" foreshadow Phil Collins's more commercial solo career, but the track breathes with an undeniable vitality. The symphonic grandeur of old is gone, replaced by a sparser, more rhythm-oriented style. In this manner, each individual part of the arrangements receives greater focus and import. As always, there are some agreeably unusual song subjects, such as the alien abduction of "Keep It Dark." "Whodunnit" sounds more like Devo than like Gentle Giant, but the skewed melodic sensibility is a link to Genesis's Gabriel-era glory days. Utilizing simpler melodies and more syncopated rhythms ("Me and Sarah Jane" even sports a reggae feel), ABACAB simultaneously simplifies and expands the Genesis sound.Q (11/96, p.64) - 3 Stars - Good - "...A step by step guide to acquiring heavy rotation on US radio..."
CMJ (1/5/04, p.10) - Ranked #14 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1982".
Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.82) - "...The band streamline their sound for the most direct, commercial set so far in their career...The title track features the horn section from Earth, Wind & Fire..."

1 star Phonyfans:
Genesis made very great albums like The Lame Lies Down On Broadway, Selling England By the Pound, Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme, and so on. Genesis ended when Steve Hackett quit the band in 1977. The name may have gone on but the music that DEFINED GENESIS ended for the worse not the better. PHIL COLLINS AND GENESIS ARE NOT THE SAME THING! GET WITH REALITY! ABACAB DOES NOT COUNT AS A "GENESIS" EFFORT!

1 star Call a cab for this one
This is where it all went completely wrong! Phil Collins was dragging the band closer and closer to his solo output, to the extent that by "Abacab", it’s hard to tell the difference. It’s bad enough that there is nothing progressive here, "Dodo" is as close as they get, but in fact there is nothing particularly good either. The title track, named apparently after the structure of the song, was a big hit single, and its easy to understand why. Essentially, its just another funky pop song, a million miles from the Gabriel or indeed later Hackett eras. Did Peter Gabriel want this? Did Steve Hackett want this? Were there any Genesis fans in the audience of the Lamb tour demanding to have pop played on stage? Obviously not or Pete and Steve would have stayed with the band and Genesis fans would have been a lot more loyal than this. The Phil Collins solo fans took the place of the once loyal Genesis fans. The people that did want this sound were the record company and Phil Collins since they were the ones that were to generously profit from it. The rest of the tracks are in a similar vein, simple shortish soul/funk influenced songs featuring Collins vocals and little else. Fortunately, Genesis (or what used to be "Genesis") would find their way back towards their progressive roots on parts of subsequent albums, but this is a real low point in the band’s output, even the front cover, producer and the EMF horns are devoid of inspiration.

1 star Who cares what Tony Banks' favorite song was?!!?!!?
Abacrap is the worse crap this is! Every song and even the cover is a big embarrasment. So what if Mama was Tony Banks' favorite song!!?!? Tony Banks was also being hypocritical with certain band members who could and couldn't have a solo act(ie. Steve Hackett, Phil Collins) so what is your point?! We are Genesis fans and we know what we like whether you like it or not!! Who cares what this trio formerly known as Genesis liked!? After all, did they care what their own fan base wanted when they wrote this crap? When Peter Gabriel writes a song he does it from the heart and from experience. Steve Hackett writes the same way. It's often by chance, if Peter Gabriel makes a hit. They don't worry all night on whether it's going to be a hit or not, unlike the three stooges of pop. The trio that simply uses the name "Genesis", makes disposable, overproduced synthed out garbage songs that are not even music. There is big difference in the writting between the trio and Peter Gabriel. Do you really think Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel wanted this!? If they did, don't you think they would have stayed in the band! The record company wanted this!! Don't tell me that Whodunnit is better than Firth of Fifth or Man on the Corner is better than Watcher of the Skies. Do us all a favor by droping dead, go to hell and get your butt kicked along the way. You're so stupid you don't even know what a hippie is! They didn't follow Genesis! No real Genesis fan cares about your fakefan rhethoric! You think you're a Genesis fan, but your are far far from it!

2 stars A bad Genesis album
The critics have been singing the praises of this album since it came out. Funny enough it was the very last Genesis album I studied. I had listened to all the rest of the albums and Abacab just didn't cross my path until recently. When it crossed my path I was shocked. The album is a huge disappointment. Why it is considered the best Genesis album I don't understand. How can one of the biggest bands in history play songs like "Dodo/Lurker", "Keep it Dark" and "Who Dunnit"? These songs are a disgrace. "Man on the Corner" is by far the best song on the album with "Abacab"(the track) and "No Reply at All" ranking up there. The rest of the album is quite disgracefully bad. They got back in it with 1983's "Genesis" album which is a great album, but Abacab will always be low on my list. I have listened to everything from "Trespass" to "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", from "Foxtrot" to Invisble Touch, From "Duke" to "We Can't Dance". So far Abacab is the one I like the least.

The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any ...

Like Love You Live before it, Still Life showcases the Stones as pure entertainers, although the band adds enough rhythmic grit to keep the record from sinking into pure showbiz formula. Nevertheless, it isn't nearly enough grit to make it rock as hard as Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! or even Love You Live, depressingly enough. ~ Stephen Thomas ...
