(1 Customer Review)
After a string of over the top '70s albums with high-energy tunes that made Bette Midler a sensation worldwide, she settled down on Broken Blossom. The first song, "Make Yourself Comfortable," sets the pace with a relaxed doo wop style that's hard to resist. There are some remakes on Broken Blossom including a version of Billy Joel's "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" with about twice as much pizzazz as the original; the surprising choice of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," from Disney's Cinderella; and "You Don't Know Me," which was previously sung by Elvis Presley, Rick Nelson, Van Morrison, and Ray Charles, and still sounds great. Broken Blossom seems to be a mixed message from Midler, whom listeners love for being so uncontrolled but she has toned down on antics. Broken Blossom served as a bridge between Midler's solely musical days and her career as actress. Shortly after its release, she performed in her classic live film Divine Madness and then was nominated for an Academy Award for The Rose. Broken Blossom is quirky, though not as spontaneous as we have come to expect. We are used to an outrageous choice in songs sung by an outrageous personality. If one can accept simply melodic songs sung by that same personality, then Broken Blossom is a fine listen. ~ Peter Fawthrop

Bette Midler Broken Blossom Songs Broken Blossom Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) SWEET! This album, and the one before it ("Songs For The New Depression"), represent to me the period when Bette Midler grew up, fast. They are way ahead of the ones that came before, in maturity and sophistication. On "Depression" the accent is on comedy. On "Broken Blossom" the emphasis is on the serious. Bette sings like never before. "You Don't Know Me", "Say Goodbye To Hollywood", "I Never Talk To Strangers", "Storybook Children" and "Paradise" - these are pure pop at its best, and at HER best, natural and full of emotion at the same time. I am captivated by these songs. And "La Vie En Rose" is a nice throwback to the past - not Bette's past, but Music's past. Bette went on to bigger things and bigger hits, but I'll never forget the delight that these 2 albums gave me in the mid-70's, before the appearance of "The Rose". And the remastered sound makes the CD all the sweeter. Submitted by stevenx9 (Mandeville, LA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Bette Midler Divine Miss M CD (1972) Remastered
Broken Blossom CD music
$5.99 Years of acting in comedies and performing Las Vegas revues have clouded public perception of Bette Midler; people tend to forget now just how completely weird she was in 1972, how she skirted on the edges of taboo. Absurdly sexy, defiantly trashy, and unafraid of crossing musical boundaries whenever she felt like it, the Bette Midler of her debut, THE DIVINE MISS M, is someone truly remarkable. That this sense of adventurousness was eventually ...
| | Bette Midler Thighs And Whispers CD (1979) Remastered
Broken Blossom music CDs
$6.09 The Divine Miss M's sixth release on Atlantic, and the one right before The Rose, finds the singer reunited with producer Arif Mardin, who contributed to her self-titled second album. Despite Bette Midler being in fine voice for Thighs and Whispers, a play on the title Cries and Whispers, a 1972 offering from film director Ingmar Bergman, and outside of a terrific version of Johnny Bristol's 1974 Top Ten solo hit "Hang on in There Baby," this 1979 disc is stuck in the '70s when an artist of Midler's stature should have made a recording that was her ode to the decade of decadence. The disco beat on most of the album is an irritant years later, though, as stated, Motown producer Johnny Bristol's "Hang on tn There Baby" survives the incessant drum/high hat sound. "Big Noise From Winnetka," sadly, does not, a future anachronism Mardin avoided with former Midler backup singer Melissa Manchester when "You Should Hear How She Talks About You" added rock to the dance vibe three years later in 1982. "Millworker" ...

| | Kelly Moneymaker Through The Basement Walls CD (2003)
Broken Blossom music CDs
$13.69 KELLY MONEYMAKERKelly Moneymaker's second CD "Through The Basement Walls" is a collection of rootsy, 60's inspired rock songs. The album title refers literally to Moneymaker creating the songs and early demos for this record in her basement, but the earthmoving tones in Moneymaker's vocals suggest another meaning. She's a woman with serious soul-her colorful voice and lyrical depth seep through the basement walls of Soul itself.A theme emerges through the songs that can be heard as a reverse echo-the cry that increases in volume each time it is repeated, urging the listener to "Let It Go!" Moneymaker seems to be saying, it doesn't matter how you choose to do it, whether it's driving away in your car, making angels in the snow or writing it all down, just release the crap - anything that keeps your spirit from dancing. The psychedelic aspect of much of the record harkens to a time when youth was as wise as it was innocent, love was free and rock-n-roll was a matter of constant reinvention.Kelly Moneymaker came out of the womb singing in Fairbanks, Alaska. She was touring the "lower 48" by her pre-teens which ultimately landed her in Los Angeles and the platinum-selling pop-trio, Exposé. She's since founded her own label, Midnite Sun Records and began producing herself and other artists as well. Her first album, "Like A Black Bird" met critical acclaim and made the Top 10 ...
