After a string of over the top '70s albums with high-energy tunes that made Bette Midler a sensation worldwide, she settled down on Broken Blossom. The first song, "Make Yourself Comfortable," sets the pace with a relaxed doo wop style that's hard to resist. There are some remakes on Broken Blossom including a version of Billy Joel's "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" with about twice as much pizzazz as the original; the surprising choice of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," from Disney's Cinderella; and "You Don't Know Me," which was previously sung by Elvis Presley, Rick Nelson, Van Morrison, and Ray Charles, and still sounds great. Broken Blossom seems to be a mixed message from Midler, whom listeners love for being so uncontrolled but she has toned down on antics. Broken Blossom served as a bridge between Midler's solely musical days and her career as actress. Shortly after its release, she performed in her classic live film Divine Madness and then was nominated for an Academy Award for The Rose. Broken Blossom is quirky, though not as spontaneous as we have come to expect. We are used to an outrageous choice in songs sung by an outrageous personality. If one can accept simply melodic songs sung by that same personality, then Broken Blossom is a fine listen. ~ Peter Fawthrop

This album, and the one before it ("Songs For The New Depression"), represent to me the period when Bette Midler grew up, fast. They are way ahead of the ones that came before, in maturity and sophistication. On "Depression" the accent is on comedy. On "Broken Blossom" the emphasis is on the serious. Bette sings like never before. "You Don't Know Me", "Say Goodbye To Hollywood", "I Never Talk To Strangers", "Storybook Children" and "Paradise" - these are pure pop at its best, and at HER best, natural and full of emotion at the same time. I am captivated by these songs. And "La Vie En Rose" is a nice throwback to the past - not Bette's past, but Music's past. Bette went on to bigger things and bigger hits, but I'll never forget the delight that these 2 albums gave me in the mid-70's, before the appearance of "The Rose". And the remastered sound makes the CD all the sweeter.

The Divine Miss M's sixth release on Atlantic, and the one right before The Rose, finds the singer reunited with producer Arif Mardin, who contributed to her self-titled second album. Despite Bette Midler being in fine voice for Thighs and Whispers, a play on the title Cries and Whispers, a 1972 offering from film director Ingmar Bergman, and outside of a terrific version of Johnny Bristol's 1974 Top Ten solo hit "Hang on in There Baby," this 1979 disc is stuck in the '70s when an artist of Midler's stature should have made a recording that was her ode to the decade of decadence. The disco beat on most of the album is an irritant years later, though, as stated, Motown producer Johnny Bristol's "Hang on tn There Baby" survives the incessant drum/high hat sound. "Big Noise From Winnetka," sadly, does not, a future anachronism Mardin avoided with former Midler backup singer Melissa Manchester when "You Should Hear How She Talks About You" added rock to the dance vibe three years later in 1982.
