If you were to compare the J. Geils Band's 1970 self-titled debut to their final album with singer Peter Wolf, 1981's FREEZE FRAME, you could easily be fooled into thinking they were two completely different bands. Although they'd later become best known for chart-storming pop-rock, the J. Geils Band started out as a straight-ahead blues-rock band, much like their mentors the Rolling Stones and their peers ZZ Top and Aerosmith.

J. Geils's debut has a fun, loose, and very rootsy feel, not far from how the band sounded on the concert stage early on. The choice of covers speaks volumes about the group's influences, as treatments of John Lee Hooker's "It Serves You Right to Suffer" and Albert Collins's "Sno-Cone" are served up with downhome, bluesy fervor. But there are some fine original compositions too, like the Stax/Booker T. sounds of "Ice Breaker (For the Big 'M')," and the FM radio-ready "Hard Drivin' Man." This is a thoroughly entertaining snapshot of the J. Geils Band's beginnings.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

The J. Geils Band: Peter Wolf (vocals); J. Geils (guitar); Magic Dick (harp); Seth Justman (keyboards); Danny Klein (bass); Stephen Jo Bladd (drums).

Rolling Stone (1/7/71, p.47) - "..a goodtime, modern piece of rock and roll...The material is perfect, the execution flawless, and the spirit never fails them..."

J Geils Band Bloodshot CD  (1973)

J. Geils Band album
CD $6.09  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
For their first two studio albums (1970's self titled debut and 1971's THE MORNING AFTER), the J. Geils Band peppered the track list with a healthy dose of covers in addition to original compositions. After issuing 1972's LIVE FULL HOUSE, an exhilarating live album, J. Geils returned with their third studio release one year later. The gold-certified BLOODSHOT only features one cover song this time around--the old Showstoppers hit "Ain't Nothin' But A House Party," a great album opener and a subsequent live favorite. Also included is the hit single "Give it to Me," and the uptempo "Southside Shuffle." All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Seth Justman (vocals, keyboards); Stephen Bladd (vocals, drums, percussion); Peter Wolf (vocals); J. Geils (guitar); Magic Dick (harp, harmonica, trumpet); Mike Hunt (saxophone). Recording information: Hit Factory, NY. Photographer: David Gahr. Unknown Contributor Role: Bill Szymczyk. Arranger: J. Geils. J. Geils Band includes: J. Geils (guitar); Peter Wolf (vocals); Magic Dick (harmonica).

CD $7.59  4.1 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
There have been few live acts as explosive and relentless as the J. Geils Band were during the 1970s. Their studio albums couldn't have prepared their fans for the band's sheer onstage energy. So after only a pair of studio albums had hit the racks (1970's self titled debut and 1971's THE MORNING AFTER), the group issued its first live set, 1972's LIVE FULL HOUSE. LIVE FULL HOUSE is one of the J. Geils Band's finest releases. While there aren't many certified hits here besides "Looking For a Love," the songs and the performances are still top notch, especially the intense rave-up "Whammer Jammer," and such other rockers as "Cruisin' For Love" and "Hard Drivin' Man." Recorded live at the Cinderella Ballroom, Detroit, Michigan on April 21-22, 1972. Originally released on Atlantic (7241). Digitally remastered by George Marino. J. Geils Band: J. Geils (guitar); Stephen Jo. Bladd (vocals, drums); Peter Wolf (vocals); Magic Dick (harp); Seth Justman (piano, organ); Daniel Klein (bass).

Although it didn't sell in the same numbers as their '80s releases LOVE STINKS and FREEZE FRAME, the J. Geils Band's 1977 album MONKEY ISLAND is considered to be one of the group's best recordings amongst longtime fans. While a few of the tracks still retain the festive rock direction of their earlier releases (most notably their upbeat cover of "I Do," which would become an instant concert staple), MONKEY ISLAND contains a dark undercurrent throughout. This is most notable on the epic title track, which sounds at times like a jam session between the Rolling Stones and Santana, as well as the vicious rocker "Somebody." MONKEY ISLAND remains the J. Geils Band's most underrated and often overlooked album. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Seth Justman (vocals, keyboards); Stephen Bladd (vocals, drums, percussion); Evette Benton, Barbara Ingram, Harriet Tharpe, G. Diane Sumler, Luther Vandross, Michelle Cobbs (vocals, background vocals); Cissy Houston, Theresa Reed, Peter Wolf (vocals); J. Geils (guitar); Magic Dick (harp, harmonica, trumpet, harmonium); Michael Brecker (saxophone, tenor saxophone, horns); Louis del Gatto, Frank Vicari, Lew DelGatto, Ronnie Cuber (saxophone); Randy Brecker (trumpet, horns); Alan Rubin, Lew Soloff (trumpet); Theresa V. Reed (background vocals). Audio Mixer: David Thoener. Audio Remasterer: George Marino. Recording information: Record Plant, New York, NY. Photographer: Alen MacWeeney. Arranger: J. Geils. J. J Geils Band Nightmares...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle CD  (1974)

J. Geils Band songs
CD $6.09  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
After their overlooked 1973 release LADIES INVITED failed to create the same spark as their previous recordings, the J. Geils Band made sure their next release, 1974's NIGHTMARES AND OTHER TALES FROM THE VINYL JUNGLE, was a killer. They sound like a band possessed throughout. This is an album full of inspired performances and solid songwriting. Individual standouts include the surprising reggae tinge of "Give it to Me," and the rocker and concert favorite "Detroit Breakdown," as well as the hit "Musta Got Lost." The J. Geils Band was back in business. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Seth Justman (vocals, keyboards); Stephen Bladd (vocals, drums, percussion); Peter Wolf (vocals); J. J Geils Band Blow Your Face Out CD  (1976)

J. Geils Band album
CD $8.55  3.8 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Recorded live at The Boston Garden, Boston, Massachusettes on November 15, 1975 and at Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan on November 19, 1975. Originally released on Atlantic (2-507). Includes liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin. Though the J. Geils Band issued a steady stream of solid R&B-infused rock records in the '70s, it always seemed that the group was better suited for raging on the concert stage than being ensconced in a cushy recording studio. Their first live album, 1972's LIVE FULL HOUSE, proved this, and remains one of the band's strongest recordings from beginning to end. It was only a matter of time until J. Geils issued a follow-up, 1976's appropriately titled BLOW YOUR FACE OUT. Every drop of the group's in-concert energy is captured splendidly throughout, especially on such standout cuts as a fantastic rendition of their early hit "Musta Got Lost," the red hot album/concert opener "Southside Shuffle," and of course the fun-filled anthem, "Houseparty." BLOW YOUR FACE OUT remains one of the great rock and party albums of the '70s. Contains 2 LPs on 1 CD. This is part of Rhino Records' "Atlantic Remasters" Series. The J. Geils Band: J. Geils (guitar); Seth Justman (vocals, keyboards); Stephen Jo Bladd (vocals, percussion); Peter Wolf (vocals); Magic Dick (harmonica); Danny Klein (bass). Producers: Allan Blazek, Bill Szymczyk, The J. Geils Band.

Combining the guitar bliss of such bands as Windy & Carl with the experimental no wave sensibilities of U.S. Maple, Rope offers an amazing piece of electro-acoustic material primed for an avant audience. The four tracks of this debut EP move from the metallic spires and plodding bass of "Unknown Source of Egoism" to the ghost-whispered "Imagination of Rhythm" as if one elongated piece or a drone-based concerto. Beats are something Rope distinctly lacks; when Prsemyslaw Drazek's guitar accidentally establishes a pattern it is fractured, displaced, and ultimately destroyed not so much with a psychedelic fade-out as a shrill explosion. Robert Iwanik claims to have never heard Nick Cave or Michael Gira prior to this recording, but the phrasing and consciously spooky techniques are quite similar. ~ Daphne Carr Recorded in Warsaw, Poland. Personnel: Przemyslaw Chris Drazek (guitar, acoustic 12-string guitar, trumpet). Recording information: Warsaw, Poland (03/2000). Rope: Robert Iwanik (vocals, bass); Przemyslaw Chris Drazek (acoustic guitar, trumpet).
White Lightning
Gene Vincent White Lightning CD  (2003)

J. Geils Band songs
CD $15.29  5 stars Audio Samples
Though the title reads White Lightning, this is actually a CD reissue of Vincent's 1970 comeback LP for Dandelion, I'm Back and I'm Proud, with the addition of four tracks from a 1971 BBC session. Was this particular comeback record something to be proud of? Not really. Recorded in 1969 for famed British DJ John Peel's Dandelion label and released the following year, it did feature some notables of the late-'60s Hollywood rock scene, including Skip Battin of the Byrds (on bass), Red Rhodes (on Dobro), Mars Bonfire (rhythm guitar), Jim Gordon (drums), and Linda Ronstadt (backing vocals), with Kim Fowley producing. But there was something of a rehash feel about the whole enterprise, which was short on new quality original material and heavy on reworkings of oldies like George Jones's "White Lightning," Dion/the Drifters' "Ruby Baby," and Bobby Day's "Rockin' Robin." There were also remakes of Vincent's own '50s hits "Be-Bop-a-Lula" and "Lotta Lovin'" that couldn't hope to displace the originals. The heavier late-'60s rock feel of the arrangements doesn't jibe well with Vincent's style, though some cuts boast a countrified touch (particularly the ones featuring Rhodes), and Vincent himself often sounds a little shaky and nervous on the vocals. The BBC session was done just a few days before his death, and rather surprisingly it's not bad. It's not terribly interesting, true, combining versions of his oldies "Be-Bop-a-Lula" and "Say Mama" with covers of "Roll Over Beethoven" and Jim Reeves' country hit "Distant Drums." But in comparison to I'm Back and I'm Proud, it sounds honest, unforced, and energetic. ~ Richie Unterberger Includes the 1970 comeback album from the rockabilly star plus four bonus tracks from a 1971 radio session. Recording information: Maida Vale Studio 4. Arranger: Skip Battyn. Personnel: Gene Vincent (vocals); Gene Vincent; John Meeks, Johnny Meeks, Mars Bonfire (guitar); Jim Grant, Jim Grant (piano); Skip Battyn, Charles Harrison (bass guitar); Bob Moore , Bob Moore (drums); Richard Cole (guitar); Red Rhodes (dobro); Dave Bailey, Grant Johnson (keyboards); Jim Gordon (drums); Linda Ronstadt, Jackie Frisco (background vocals). Howlin' At The Moon

J. Geils Band music CDs
CD $15.45
HOWLIN' AT THE MOON was recorded, mixed & mastered in Nashville during late October, 2007 and produced by Evan Westerlund & Larry Marrs (longtime member of Marty Stuart's Hillbilly Band). It features some outstanding session musicians, inclusive Drums & Percussion: Steve Holland (Ray Price, Charlie Daniels Band, Anita Cochrane, Mila Mason) - Bass, Harmony Vocals, Acoustic Guitar: Larry Marrs (Marty Stuart, George Jones, Martina McBride, Ricochet, Tracy Byrd) - Electric Guitars: James Mitchell (Dierks Bentley, Brooks & Dunn, Terri Clark) - Pedal Steel: Robby Turner (Dixie Chicks, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, Gary Allan), Piano & Keyboards: Garland Craft (Oak Ridge Boys, T. Graham Brown, Bellamy Brothers) - Dobro & Harmonica: Mike Douchette (Alabama, Tammy Wynette, George Jones) - Fiddle: Kim Marrs (Nashville String Kings).

HOWLIN' AT THE MOON is a collection of 12 songs from an extensive library written & co-written by Evan. His writing style is one of story songs with a lot of visual landscape about people, places, situations, love, pain, and the whole damn thing. 'My ambition is to write the perfect song...one that reels you in from first breath and note to last, and causes you to hit the start button again, and again, and again...' Whether any of the songs become a commercial success or not, is really not what is driving Evan's actions as a writer/performer. It is simply a passion for writing songs that didn't exist before & for those songs to reach their audience. 'For me it's more a matter of - when people hear a song, do they appreciate it enough to hear it again, or tell somebody about it.

'Influences: The Eagles, Poco, Steve Miller, April Wine, Dire Straits, Bob Seger, Dolly Parton, Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, Johnny Cash, Vince Gill, Rodney Crowell, Kevin Welch, Dwight Yoakam, Radney Foster, Dierks Bentley, Buddy Miller & Chris Night.
