Aided by airy but sparkling production by Patrick Leonard, Jewel comforts one and all with this collection. On "Hands," she sings that if she could tell the world just one thing, "It would be that we're all OK." Outside of her multi-octave, crystalline voice, therein lies a large part of Jewel's true appeal--a seemingly boundless compassion. To the Beatles prescription "All You Need Is Love," she adds one more ingredient: "Fill your lives with love and bravery/And you shall lead a life uncommon." While much of her yearning is spiritual and utopian, Jewel is not immune to the call of the flesh. In "Do You" she wants to stay with a lover because their teeth are straight and "the sex is good."
It's not all about words however. There's a hip-hop touch in the rhythm section on "Down So Long," confirmed in the third verse when Jewel raps for about two bars. The natural sounds throughout the CD dominate the subtler synth touches. Acoustic guitar, tasteful wah-wah and spot-on harmonies make this an extremely intimate, personal sounding release.

Rolling Stone (12/10/98, pp.119-120) - 3 (out of 5) - "...Jewel's sincere sentiment has its attractions in a time of irony overload; she plays John Denver to Dylanesque tricksters like Courtney Love and Beck..." CMJ (12/21/98, p.24) - "...Her sentimental musings and near-anthemic tunes...explore love, quircky obsessions, and feelings of loneliness in such a gooey, poetic kind of way, you can't help but listen." Spirit Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Jewel Rules Jewel did a great job with this album!!!!! Submitted by a reviewer (Sometown, ID) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Love her voice !! Love her music !! Jewel is one the best acoustic/folk singer/songwriters around. Her songs are poetic and insightful; her voice ranges from that of an angelic sound to a bit of grittiness when it fits the song. Of course my fave songs on this cd are Hands and Life Uncommon. A "must have" cd for your collection. Although Jewel has taken a departure from her signature style with her newest cd, I do hope she returns to her roots with any upcoming music, more in line with the wonderful songs on Spirit. What's Simple Is True If I could give this album more than 5 STARS... I would!!!! I didn't like Jewel very much before, but since I heard this album I changed my mind. This album is so artistic, every track is poetic and lyrics are deep and extremely well written. Jewel's voice sounds good and matches the songs very well. This is Jewel's BEST album - after her downfall with 0304.Please listen 2 it!!! Submitted by MissMusic (Florence, Italy) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
ROCK ON GIRL!!!! If you liked "Pieces Of You" you'll love this one. It's definately more mature, and the album has a feeling or theme throughout it's entirety. It's packed full of songs you can belt out and have stuck in you head for weeks, if not longer. As songwriter myself I have to say she expressed herself through the music very well. Keep up the great work Jewel--EDA Forever!! Submitted by a reviewer (Midvale, UT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Jewel captures the human As a fellow musician and avid listener, I am amazed and refreshed by Jewel's songbird voice and true-to-life lyrics. A close look at her lyrics reveals that she has put a great deal of thought into what she's written. The album "Spirit" is appropriately titled. Like a well-written essay, it constantly adresses the topic of what each of us feels. Jewel has captured much of the human spirit's twists and groans and has deftly applied it to music and sound. 5 stars and Kudos to you, Jewel! Spirit
$6.29 Jewel was nominated for the 1997 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. "Who Will Save Your Soul" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
When this Alaskan decided to give up her day job and move into her Volkswagen van in 1993, she began an almost storybook ascendance to the upper echelon of singer-songwriters. Like so many other aspiring musicians with a guitar and a story to tell, Jewel is a keen observer of human behavior. But it is her voice, a classically-trained instrument that has developed far beyond Jewel's 22 years, that makes her debut album--much of which was recorded at Neil Young's Broken Arrow Ranch with pieces of his HARVEST MOON band--such a ...
| | Madonna Ray Of Light CD (1998)
Spirit
$6.09 RAY OF LIGHT won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album and for Best Recording Package, and was nominated for Album Of The Year. "Ray Of Light" won the 1999 Grammy for Best Dance Recording and Best Short Form Music Video, and was nominated for Record Of The Year.
Relentlessly contemporary, RAY OF LIGHT pairs Madonna with producer William Orbit, an electronics wizard who has worked with major R&B acts and even such modern rockers as Blur and Depeche Mode. Reportedly, Madonna tried to snare Liam Howlett of high-strung techno-rockers the Prodigy into the project--Howlett claims to have turned her down. But the more dextrous, less in-your-face Orbit was probably a better choice anyway. ...

On first hearing, the Goo Goo Dolls sound like the Replacements' distant cousins, full of trashy rock bravado tempered by intelligent, often tender lyricism and a penchant for combining ringing acoustic ...
| | Alanis Morissette Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie CD (1998)
Spirit
$10.39 "Thank U" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Alanis has a lot to answer for; in the process of changing the face of '90s pop music, she opened the door to scores of inferior imitators who crowded the charts with their transparent careerist fury. What they missed was the renegade spirit that lurks beneath Morissette's statements off vengeance and dissatisfaction. It's that spirit that enlivens INFATUATION JUNKIE. From awkward title to the unconventional lyrical construction, it's clear that the years between this album and Morisette's previous ...

Following her smash hit THE WOMAN IN ME was no easy task for Shania Twain and husband/producer Mutt Lange. With COME ON OVER the sexy vixen of modern country has carved out a bigger niche for herself that is sure to please her growing throng of fans. With a huge helping of rock and roll added to her country trimmings, Twain proves her success has been no fluke. As a rule, she goes out of her way to break ...
| | Oliver Jackson Last Great Concert CD (2000) (Import) Germany
Spirit
$20.39 Recorded live at The Fabrik, Hamburg, Germany on November 16, 1993. Includes liner notes by George Wein and Hans Nagel-Heyer.
Drummer Oliver Jackson had one foot in each of the major jazz camps, bop and swing. Out of Detroit, he performed with some of the first-rate jazz artists from that city including Tommy Flanagan and Paul Chambers and worked with Eddie Locke and Yusef Lateef. But he also played with great swingsters and traditional jazzers like Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, Charlie Shavers, andBuck Clayton and, if this album is any indication, that ...
