Aided by airy but sparkling production by Patrick Leonard, Jewel comforts one and all with this collection. On "Hands," she sings that if she could tell the world just one thing, "It would be that we're all OK." Outside of her multi-octave, crystalline voice, therein lies a large part of Jewel's true appeal--a seemingly boundless compassion. To the Beatles prescription "All You Need Is Love," she adds one more ingredient: "Fill your lives with love and bravery/And you shall lead a life uncommon." While much of her yearning is spiritual and utopian, Jewel is not immune to the call of the flesh. In "Do You" she wants to stay with a lover because their teeth are straight and "the sex is good."
It's not all about words however. There's a hip-hop touch in the rhythm section on "Down So Long," confirmed in the third verse when Jewel raps for about two bars. The natural sounds throughout the CD dominate the subtler synth touches. Acoustic guitar, tasteful wah-wah and spot-on harmonies make this an extremely intimate, personal sounding release.

Love her voice !! Love her music !!
Jewel is one the best acoustic/folk singer/songwriters around. Her songs are poetic and insightful; her voice ranges from that of an angelic sound to a bit of grittiness when it fits the song. Of course my fave songs on this cd are Hands and Life Uncommon. A "must have" cd for your collection. Although Jewel has taken a departure from her signature style with her newest cd, I do hope she returns to her roots with any upcoming music, more in line with the wonderful songs on Spirit.

If I could give this album more than 5 STARS... I would!!!! I didn't like Jewel very much before, but since I heard this album I changed my mind. This album is so artistic, every track is poetic and lyrics are deep and extremely well written. Jewel's voice sounds good and matches the songs very well. This is Jewel's BEST album - after her downfall with 0304.Please listen 2 it!!!

If you liked "Pieces Of You" you'll love this one. It's definately more mature, and the album has a feeling or theme throughout it's entirety. It's packed full of songs you can belt out and have stuck in you head for weeks, if not longer. As songwriter myself I have to say she expressed herself through the music very well. Keep up the great work Jewel--EDA Forever!!

As a fellow musician and avid listener, I am amazed and refreshed by Jewel's songbird voice and true-to-life lyrics. A close look at her lyrics reveals that she has put a great deal of thought into what she's written. The album "Spirit" is appropriately titled. Like a well-written essay, it constantly adresses the topic of what each of us feels. Jewel has captured much of the human spirit's twists and groans and has deftly applied it to music and sound. 5 stars and Kudos to you, Jewel!
