Solo performer: Vangelis. OCEANIC was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. In the tradition of John Tesh, Kitaro, Yanni, and others in the field of lush, synthesizer-driven mood music, Vangelis cranks out another collection of tunes heavy on hooks and light on substance. A few too many sweeps up and down the harp litter this recording with continual fading into environmental ocean sounds. Chords are simple, progressions are simple, melodies are simple (if they exist). Things get more upbeat toward the last half of the disc, which features a fat bass sound and a classic 4/4 rock backbeat. There is little to sustain the music here beyond your basic background music. The cover featuring out-of-focus smiling synchronized swimmers does not help. ~ Mark W.B. Allender As its title indicates, Vangelis' Oceanic is a quiet, meditative work evocative of the sea. ~ Jason Ankeny If Vangelis has come to be known as the definitive cosmic composer, OCEANIC suggests that his interest extends to all things vast and unknowable. His aquatic passion comes through clearly in this exhilarating production, replete with harps, murmuring underwater entities, and mythic choruses. Master of Tranquility If there is ever a problem for me to fall asleep, i put this CD on and I am out after a few tracks. Vangelis has created a masterpiece of Tranquility. I wish he has a follow-up to this CD. Submitted by a reviewer (New Haven, CT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Okay as background music I'm the kind of person who leaves a CD playing in the car for several times through. It's absolutely beautiful the first couple of times. After that, however, the lustre starts to fade. Don't get me wrong, it's still an excellent showcase for Vangelis' talent for sweeping soundtracks, but it'll probably get put away for a while between listening sessions, just to try to renew that first shine. Rich! Warm! Enticing! Beautiful! Love It! Outstanding. Takes me to the sea and beyond. I love water and you feel as if your sitting nearby, riding on top of, deep beneath the surface and all at once. Submitted by subdubbub (California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Surging themes, evocative. I love the powerful surging themes on this album, incredibly evocative and emotional. Delicate harps add to the mix, its a troiumph. It is a bit short though, and has one of the worst covers ever. Submitted by Nick S (London UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Personnel: Vangelis (various instruments); Montserrat Caballe, Konstantinos Paliatsaras (vocals). Engineers: Philippe Colonna, Frederick Rousseau. Includes liner notes by Vangelis. Personnel: Vangelis (synthesizer); Montserrat Caballé (soprano). Liner Note Authors: Vangelis Papathanassiou; Vangelis. Arranger: Vangelis. This portentous tribute to Domenikos Theotokopoulos (16th-century painter "El Greco") divides its ten tracks among as many separate movements (complete with a disc-closing "Epilogue") and explores them with all the excitement of a day at the art gallery (this concept was, in fact, inspired by the National Gallery of Greece's efforts to obtain El Greco's "St. Peter"). Which means it's very studious, very meticulous, and very good for you, but ultimately the (very few) thrills here are intrinsic at best and not really all that thrilling. Composer, arranger, producer, and performer Vangelis gooses up the action with occasional bombast, but the overall tone of El Greco's classical new age is as solemn and washed-out as a centuries-old painting. ~ ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Oceanic
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what the Corrs received in the spring of 2002, a year and a half after "In Blue" and its accompanying single "Breathless" broke down the doors in America for the U.S. Only two songs on this set list are shared with In Blue, but that doesn't mean that the group returns to their slightly more traditional Celtic roots on the remainder of the songs. Sure, there are hints of that, but there are also four pop covers, two of them ("Little Wing" and "Ruby Tuesday") featuring Ron Wood, with another song, the Lee Hazelwood/Nancy Sinatra ...
