Jackie DeShannon Breakin It Up On The Beatles Tour (Remsatered) CD (1964)
Enchanted: The Works Of Stevie Nicks CD music Legendary female singing sensation and chosen concert opener for The Beatles' legendary material from the early 60s; Digital remaster containing eight additional songs. U.K. import.
Contrary to what the exploitative title might have you believe, this was not recorded during a Beatles tour (though Jackie DeShannon was an opening act on their 1964 North American tour), or even a live album. Instead, it was something of a grab bag of a dozen tracks that had already been released on Liberty singles between 1962 and 1964. For all its scattered origins, however, it was a pretty good compilation of her early-'60s work, though it was neither definitive nor the very best dozen tracks she did during this period. The best stuff is extremely good, however, starting with her original versions of "Needles and Pins" and "When You Walk in the Room," both of which anticipated some of the elements that would make up folk-rock in the mid-'60s, and both of which were covered for much bigger hits by the Searchers. There's also some fine girl group-influenced pop/rock that she co-wrote with the young Randy Newman ("She Don't Understand Him Like I Do," "Hold Your Head High"), Jack Nitzsche (the very Phil Spector-esque "Should I Cry"), and Sharon Sheeley ("You Won't Forget Me"), as well as a good song Newman wrote alone, "Did He Call Today, Mama." Some of the other tracks, such as the covers of Buddy Holly's "Oh, Boy" and "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands," come off as filler in this company, but overall it's a fairly strong set by this underrated singer/songwriter. [The 2005 CD reissue on RPM adds considerable value with lengthy historical liner notes and eight bonus tracks from the same era, including a few standouts, like her folk-rocky "Needles and Pins" B-side "Till You Say You'll Be Mine," the zesty orchestrated pop/rocker "Try to Forget Him," and the girl group goodie "Breakaway." Collectors will also want this for the presence of three previously unreleased cuts among those bonus tracks, those being a pure blues-folk reading of "Mean Old Frisco" and the more routine early-'60s-styled pop numbers "Today Will Have No Night" and "Give Me a Break."] ~ Richie Unterberger
Repressing. Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1964 album from the singer/songwriter. This LP was hastily compiled in 1964 to capitalize on De Shannon being chosen to support the Beatles on their US tour that year. The rather ordinary LP front cover with a photo of De Shannon from somewhere other than the tour reflects the haste. However the recordings are superb, arranged by Jack Nitzsche, they confirm what a tremendous performer she was. Originals like 'When You Walk In The Room', 'The Prince' and 'You Won't Forget Me' along with her original version of 'Needles & Pins' have been remastered from the original tapes. In addition, eight bonus non-LP tracks from contemporary singles have been added. The album is compiled and annotated by Jim Pierson and Jackie De Shannon and many of the pictures & other material are from De Shannon's own archive. RPM.
CD contains 8 bonus tracks.

Chasing Victory Fiends CD (2007)
Enchanted: The Works Of Stevie Nicks CD music When lead singer Adam Harrell switches from screaming to singing on "King of the Carp," this album's opening track, his voice evokes no one so much as John Lydon, and it's a curious moment: screamo bands are usually more about conspicuous anguish than sharp, nasal vituperation. But if one thing is clear on Fiends, it's the fact that Chasing Victory are determined to leave screamo behind -- not without a backward glance now and then (there's still a fair amount of screaming, for those who need to be weaned gradually), but with clear determination. And good for them. The tight harmonies and the cathartic chorus on "King of the Carp" nicely counterbalance the yelling during the verses, and when things veer between screamo and meat-and-potatoes rock on "Rapture Raptors" the effect of the juxtaposition is as powerful as the song itself. Elsewhere they venture even further afield, flirting at one point with junglism (check out the double-speed drumming on "Dr. Jekyll/Stephen Hyde") and bringing in horns on "G.O.B. vs Tony Wonder." Not everything works, of course. "Oceans Away the Sequel" just sounds silly, which would be OK if it weren't so obvious that they were trying for serious, and on "Miaminions" they actually go down on their knees to rhyme with "please". In the first couplet. Not OK, guys. But their sound is getting increasingly better, and there's reason to hope the lyrics will catch up soon. Keep an eye on this band. ~ Rick Anderson

Personnel: Chris Carmichael (strings); Brad Moist, Ann Lamb, Ashley Kirbo, Paige Dantzler, Nathan Dantzler, Joey Lee, Jim Cooper (background vocals).

Justice on a Budget CD (2004)
Enchanted: The Works Of Stevie Nicks album for sale NCM East Records is pleased to announce the release of the self-titled debut album from Justice on a Budget (NCM 40123), a core trio of musicians from the Philadelphia area who craft bold compositions through the language of improvisation. The group explores genres and themes that are linked by simple structures, resulting in expressions from standard jazz to post-rock to breakbeat and beyond. For this recording, the addition of guest musicians ranges from Brazilian and Afro-Cuban percussionists to four part horn chorales, augmenting the scope of sounds offered by this thoughtful and dynamic trio. With this unique debut, Justice on a Budget will deny and maybe even confirm your wildest categorizations.
About Justice on a Budget: Featuring Eric Hastings (drums, percussion, loops, electronics), John Conahan (pianos, keyboards, synths), and Cory Neale (double bass, electric bass, turntables), Justice on a Budget began as an informal collection of musicians who gathered to improvise over very loose structures and soundscapes, with all preconceptions left behind. Over a three-year period, these players developed a relationship that allows them to collectively express a shared sonic vision, with a wide-open approach to the creation of new music.
The photography contained within the CD package was taken at Summit Camp, Greenland; one of Earth's last great frontiers.
