Words and Music No one has ever accused Kristofferson of having a great voice, but when it comes to writing country music, there is none better. By Nancy (Crystal River, FL)
A must for Kristofferson fans This is a powerful album, with a great range of the songs of Kris Kristofferson. His voice adds an undefinable level of meaning to the poetry of the lyrics -- the songs lose an important element of their meaning when someone else sings them. By finlore (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada)
The heart of Kristopherson You feel and hear a sad and triupmphant autobiobraphy in these superbly selected songs. Not the best quality voice but the poetry and sincerity of the lyrics make up what time, booze and drugs took from Kristopherson's voice over the years. By p ripa (Madison WI)

Lucinda Williams Car Wheels on a Gravel Road CD (1998) Top Seller
Austin Sessions album for sale All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Can't Let Go" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Williams's fans waited a long six years for this album, as Lucinda went through music business hassles and a revolving door of producers. The reward for their patience is an album full of rootsy, heartfelt observations that alternately rock and mourn. CAR WHEELS is full of songs about loss and longing, like "Metal Firecracker," "Drunken Angel" and "I Lost It," but even when she's bemoaning her own lack of happiness on the bluesy "Joy," she lets loose with so much passion that it seems inevitable she'll find her emotional center again.
Produced largely by Steve Earle, CAR WHEELS is immersed in that late-'90s alt-country sound, full of slide guitar, accordion, dobro and other Americana touches. It's a tribute to Williams's unique artistic vision that she distinguishes herself from the No Depression crowd by virtue of her idiosyncratic songwriting. Full of lust, sadness and the occasional glimmer of hope, CAR WHEELS is one small step for Lucinda Williams and one giant leap for those tuned into her wavelength.

John Prine In Spite of Ourselves CD (1999) Top Seller
Austin Sessions CD music Principally recorded at Jack's Tracks and MCA Publishing Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by John Prine and Jim Rooney.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
IN SPITE OF OURSELVES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
John Prine's first post-neck cancer studio album finds him duetting on a slew of country classics and rustic obscurities with some high-caliber talent. Throughout IN SPITE OF OURSELVES, the main theme bounces between lovin' and cheatin' in different circumstances, be it swapping spouses ("Let's Invite Them Over," with Iris DeMent) or being discreet in a small town ("In a Town This Size," with Dolores Keane). Backed by crying pedal steel, mournful dobros, and rippling piano, Prine makes the kind of classic country that was pouring out of Nashville in the late '60s and early '70s.
Prine's laconic singing style meshes perfectly with such contemporary country superstars as Trisha Yearwood (Roger Miller's "When Two Worlds Collide") and Patty Loveless (Webb Pierce's "Back Street Affair"). Other notable partners included Lucinda Williams ("Wedding Bells/Let's Turn Back the Years"), Melba Montgomery ("We Must Have Been Out of Our Minds" and "Milwaukee Here I Come"), and Emmylou Harris ("I Know One"). Of all these notable vocalists, Iris DeMent turns out to be Prine's perfect partner. With her Carter Family-inflected twang, DeMent fits hand-in-glove with Prine's relaxed delivery, particularly on the George Jones/Tammy Wynette nugget, "(We're Not) The Jet Set."
Personnel: John Prine (vocals); Paul Griffith (drums).
Audio Mixer: Mark Miller .

Kelly Willis What I Deserve CD (1999)
Austin Sessions songs In a different world, Kelly Willis would be a huge country star. Blessed with an emotional, pure voice, songwriting talent and good looks, she's the whole package and then some. But she didn't quite fit in with the Nashville scene, so she's based in Texas, where she's been dubbed "The Voice of Austin." Her previous albums only hinted at the full scope of Willis' artistic vision, but her fourth full-length release WHAT I DESERVE is the first one on which it truly shines through.
Willis wrote or co-wrote half the tracks on the album, but she's also chosen material by her husband Bruce Robison, Nick Drake, Paul Kelly and even the Replacements' Paul Westerberg. It's her unmistakable voice which ties it all together, whether she's crooning her way through the dreamy "Not Long for This World" and "Time Has Told Me," getting bluesy on "Got A Feelin' For Ya" or tackling upbeat numbers like "Take Me Down." Highlights include the title track and great versions of Westerberg's "They're Blind" and Robison's "Wrapped." Listeners who find mainstream country music too slick and obvious will enjoy Willis' down-to-earth, highly personal take on the genre.

Emmylou Harris / Linda Ronstadt Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions CD (1999)
Austin Sessions CD music Perhaps inspired by the triumphs of TRIO and TRIO II, which they recorded with Dolly Parton, Linda Rondstadt and Emmylou Harris went into a makeshift studio to record an album as a duo. The results are superb. Rondstadt leaves her slick Hollywood pop sound behind and delivers some of her most unadorned and heartfelt singing since the early '70s. Harris is Harris: her voice is as delicate as a butterfly and as strong as steel.
The songs on WESTERN WALL are varied, each vividly telling a story. "1917" is a chilling chronicle of an affair cast amid the brutality of WW I. "Sweet Spot" is an eerie declaration of devotion, with a spare, Laurie Anderson-like use of electronics, written by Harris and Luscious Jackson's Jill Cunniff. Rondstadt shines on a straightforward, proud version of Jackson Browne's "For a Dancer." Other song choices include Bruce Springsteen's "Across the Border" and Leonard Cohen's "Sisters of Mercy." Excellent.
Recorded at the Arizona Inn, Tucson, Arizona.

Ray Benson, the driving force behind the 1993 all-star CD A TRIBUTE TO BOB WILLS, continues his role as keeper of the Western Swing flame with RIDE WITH BOB. An all-star lineup gathers to salute music that's jazzy, bluesy, toe-tapping and just plain fun. AATW serves as the "house band," as each guest artist steps up to the mike to demonstrate how Wills' music lends itself to a variety of arrangements and any number of wildly disparate vocal styles.
The track featuring Willie Nelson and Manhattan Transfer is just as good a fit as the one featuring the Squirrel Nut Zippers, for example. Other highlights include Tim McGraw's bluesy take on "Milk Cow Blues," and longtime Wills booster Merle Haggard's terrific version of "St. Louis Blues." Dwight Yoakam was born to sing "New San Antonio Rose," while Reba McEntire, tearing into "Right or Wrong," sounds like she hasn't had so much fun in years. While these marquee names are the obvious draw on RIDE WITH BOB--other artists include the Dixie Chicks, Clint Black and Shawn Colvin--the quality of the music itself can't be denied. As Clint Black sings near the end of the CD, "Bob Wills Is Still the King."
