Although he's achieved most of his success as a producer and songwriter, Steve Tyrell's debut album A New Standard chooses not to showcase his skills at the latter, instead offering Tyrell's vocal versions of twelve standards (including three that appeared in the film Father of the Bride Part II). They're not really exceptional, but they are well done; the main problem is that these songs have been done before so many times, and while pleasant, Tyrell's versions don't really offer anything new. Still, it is nice to hear musicians like Toots Thielemans, Joe Sample, and Harry "Sweets" Edison. ~ Steve HueyEntertainment Weekly (2/16/01, p.99) - "...Tyrell swings elegantly, offering a fresh take on 17 classic gems..." - Rating: A- Down Beat (12/00, p.86) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...[He] delivers Tony Bennett heartiness, Jack Sheldon mashed-potatoes wit, Tom Waits gravel and Frank Sinatra phrasing, all with an intriguing measure of warmth and expansiveness..." Steve Tyrell has had a long journeyman's career in the music business, serving as record company executive, songwriter, and producer. But no one could have predicted the twist his career took in the late '90s. After he sang standards on the soundtracks of the films Father of the Bride (1991) and Father of the Bride 2 (1995), he was signed up by Atlantic Records to make an album of similar material. New Standard
$14.25 2008 album from the Mexico City native, a musician and folklorist with an interest in the instruments and musical traditions of Incan and Mayan civilizations. Tales Of Astral Travelers, links Perez's interest in South American antiquity with contemporary sounds and recording technology. The result is a lilting m‚lange of flutes and percussion instruments, synthesizer, natural sounds, accordion, and strings. Tracks like "Insectos" and "Amphibians," which feature recordings of the title creatures, draw us directly into the heart of the rain forest, while beautifully evocative cuts like "Aurora's Dream" send a kind of siren song on woodwinds. Domo.
