TO VENUS AND BACK was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.
TO VENUS AND BACK pairs a disc of studio tracks with a disc of live concert recordings. The first disc features some of Amos' most electronic-sounding productions to date. Though her acrobatic singing is given its usual full rein, many of the studio songs feature intricate, effects-rich orchestrations. The album-opening "Bliss" begins as a windswept soundscape, only to open up into a hook-laden chorus. "Juarez" is an intoxicating stew of disembodied voices, roiling synthesizers, and propulsive percussion. "Glory of the '80s" visits a night of drug-fueled hedonism during a decade that defined excess. "Josephine" is a standout track that will appeal to fans of Amos' more open, piano-centered work.
The second disc culls tracks from Amos' 1998 Plugged Tour. The live rendering of "Cornflake Girl" is a particularly stirring affair, noteworthy for Amos' vocal bravura and for the cascading sheets of piano that she adds during the song's climax. Also featured is "Cooling," a track that Amos has never committed to album. No Tori Amos fan will want to be without TO VENUS AND BACK.

Rolling Stone (10/14/99, p.124) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...testifies to just how wide and deep her river runs....[it] is Amos at her most surreal, dreaming of her past, her pain and her desires in supersaturated musical and lyrical color..." Entertainment Weekly (9/24/99, p.145) - "...this disc is more 'Tori in an Ambient Mood'....it's the most enjoyable listen she's generated in years..." - Rating: B Q (11/99, p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...her most involving album to date....she only emerges as even more singular a talent, practically unique....The songs of Tori Amos are nothing if not brave." CMJ (10/18/99, p.32) - "...The studio album contains some of Amos' most introspective songs to date....The live bonus album showcases her more rocking and raw side with hard-hitting renditions of her hits....VENUS should appease anyone looking to scratch that Amos itch." Mojo (Publisher) (11/99, p.97) - "...This fine, complex record finds [Amos] a little calmer, but no less challenging or controversial. She's threaded a few more beads, several of them gems." AMAZING!!! ?!?!?!? - the studio disc is AWESOME - it has all the best qualities of her previous work, just now it's all moved up to the next level!!
"Juarez"/"Concertina" - 2 examples...with music that's now all electro/alternative/vibed out = THIS IS THE PERFECT/ULTIMATE TORI EXPERIENCE!!!!! Submitted by twin peaks... (England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Some Good, Much Bad The live disc is pretty good but it's the studio disc that's not. Bliss and 1000 Oceans are passible (albiet rehash of earlier work) but the rest is almost unlistenable. This begins a run of garbage from Tori that continues thru today. Maybe "Beekeeper" will be better. Submitted by Spike (Fresno, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
shes killed her monkey "father, i killed my monkey, i let it out to, taste the sweet of spring" are tori's 1st lines on to venus and back:disc1(on "bliss"), in complete tori form. we know this album is going to be a bumpy and brillant ride to venus right at the beginning of take off.
this is her most technical magic sounding work; abstract and cryptic most of the time, the piano is a bit buried on here but all the other sounds and her voice shining through, makes you barely notice. songs like "juaraz", "concertina", "datura" and "spring haze" really reminds you that this woman is in a class all by herself.
disc one almost plays the role as P.A. music before a concert, if you move right along into disc2, which is an awesome concert, just when you thought she couldn't out due disc 1, she so does with this concert of various recordings from the '98 plugged tour,"precious things", "cooling", "cloud on my tounge" and "sugar" are just afew of the highlights, with "waitress" probably winning best in show. $108.55 Mitchell Torok had a number one country hit in 1953 with "Caribbean," but a four-disc box set of his recordings from the late '40s through the early '60s comes as a bit of a surprise, especially when there is no available single-disc anthology. Despite his relative obscurity, Torok was a versatile performer and a talented ...

To Venus And Back songs
$17.15 The Universe is a side project by Architecture in Helsinki's Gus Franklin, and their debut album, The Outer Void Intrepid Sailor, is a much more focused affair than that eclectic collective's sprawling albums. Seemingly highly influenced by both '70s art rock (think Hunky Dory-era David Bowie and mid-career 10cc) and more recent dream pop fabulists like Mercury Rev and Grandaddy, Franklin has created an honest-to-goodness concept album, telling the story of a solo astronaut through clever, catchy pop songs like "The Announcement" (which has the childlike feel of a classic Flaming Lips song matched to a rich melody that recalls the High Llamas) and the dreamy "Grand Central" (more akin to the ramshackle psychedelia of the Olivia Tremor Control). More engagingly tuneful than Architecture in Helsinki's own albums, with several immediately catchy choruses and excellently realized arrangements that mix orchestral influences with vintage electronic bleeps and whirs, The Outer Void Intrepid Sailor is right on the edge of over the top, but Franklin's strong melodic sense and winsome, boyish vocals keep things from tipping over into pretension. ~ Stewart Mason
'The Outer Void Intrepid Sailor,’ is the brainchild of brothers Lachlan and Gus Franklin who, along with musical think-alike Ben Browning and other assorted friends and collaborators form a group called; theUniverse. Having spent many a childhood year together in the family car, writing spasmodic ditties to add to their very own fictional top40 ‘Chart’, the brothers - whilst driving down to family Christmas one year â€" ...
