"Down" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
After dabbling in Beatlesque psychedelia on 1996's TINY MUSIC (SONGS FROM THE VATICAN GIFT SHOP, Stone Temple Pilots took a more straightforward rock approach with 1999's NO. 4. During the three years between albums, Scott Weiland released a solo album amidst a sea of personal problems, while the rest of Stone Temple Pilots joined forces with Ten Inch Men vocalist Dave Coutts for the one-off side project Talk Show. The time apart helped contribute to an STP record with much darker overtones than the sunnier TINY MUSIC.
Weiland's lyrics in particular allude to many of his past problems. The grinding "Pruno" tracks his falling into a downward spiral while the pounding guitars and ambient breaks of "No Way Out" help provide a background for lyrics that address his feelings of helplessness. In keeping up with the harder sounds of Korn and Limp Bizkit that dominated the pop charts in the late '90s, guitarist Dean DeLeo churns out heavy riffs throughout the Jurassic stomp of "Down" and "Heaven & Hot Rods." Balancing out these pounding tracks is more melodic fare, including the chiming "Glide" (complete with zither and fuzz bass), the acoustic "I Got You," and the lushly wistful "Atlanta."

This is the last STP CD I have collected and it didn't disappoint. There are some flat out rockers on here like no way out and down. then there are the mellow acoustic songs like Sour Girl and I Got You. The clincher for me is the final track Atlanta. It's very Jim Morrison sounding. This whole CD rocks and I command you to get it!!!

This album is just as good as Core...even the laid back mellow songs are great...don't listen to the close minded people on here because songs like Atlanta are great...if you like Core you'll like this IT ROCKS

This cd is good, a vast improvement over Tiny Music. They rock hard and rock soft and they do both very well. How can you be a fan of STP, or good music in general, and not like "Atlanta"??? It's one of STP's best tracks.

This is one of STPs best. The first 7 tracks are incredible. And so is track 10. While sone songs are much weaker than some of their other stuff (songs like sour girl),other song are some of their hardest, most rockin'songs they have ever made (Down,pruno). Altogether a very solid album! Yo!

This doesn't even sound like stp anymore, sounds like some hippie, flower power, bright sunshine and rainbows garbage. Basically its sounds like "lady picture show" (a terrible song from tiny music that somehow people liked) STP is offically dead.
