"Down" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
After dabbling in Beatlesque psychedelia on 1996's TINY MUSIC (SONGS FROM THE VATICAN GIFT SHOP, Stone Temple Pilots took a more straightforward rock approach with 1999's NO. 4. During the three years between albums, Scott Weiland released a solo album amidst a sea of personal problems, while the rest of Stone Temple Pilots joined forces with Ten Inch Men vocalist Dave Coutts for the one-off side project Talk Show. The time apart helped contribute to an STP record with much darker overtones than the sunnier TINY MUSIC.
Weiland's lyrics in particular allude to many of his past problems. The grinding "Pruno" tracks his falling into a downward spiral while the pounding guitars and ambient breaks of "No Way Out" help provide a background for lyrics that address his feelings of helplessness. In keeping up with the harder sounds of Korn and Limp Bizkit that dominated the pop charts in the late '90s, guitarist Dean DeLeo churns out heavy riffs throughout the Jurassic stomp of "Down" and "Heaven & Hot Rods." Balancing out these pounding tracks is more melodic fare, including the chiming "Glide" (complete with zither and fuzz bass), the acoustic "I Got You," and the lushly wistful "Atlanta."
Stone Temple Pilots: Scott Weiland (vocals, organ); Dean DeLeo (acoustic, electric & lap-steel guitars, 6-string bass); Robert DeLeo (guitar, zither, bass, percussion); Erik Kretz (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Charlie Bisharat, Gerry Hilera, Peter Kent (violin); Evan Wilson, Matt Funes (viola); Suzie Katayama (cello); Brendan O'Brien (piano, keyboards, percussion, background vocals); Barrett Martin (bass marimba).
Rolling Stone (11/11/99, pp.136-7) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...[STP] have found freedom in the dimly lit arena of waning interest. In typical STP fashion, NO.4's songs are strong pop-rock pieces..." Alternative Press (12/99, pp.116-7) - 3 out of 5 - "...STP have matured late-entry grunge whipping boys into seductive pop-rock underdogs....The best moments remain those which maneuver closest the lounge-rock constructions of the groups 3rd album and Weiland's solo effort, 12 BAR BLUES..." CMJ (11/1/99, p.3) - "...a powerful and cohesive album....a larger, louder and more refined glimpse of a band that continues to hold itself and its music together at the seems..." Stone Temple Pilots No. 4 Songs No. 4 Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Finally got them all This is the last STP CD I have collected and it didn't disappoint. There are some flat out rockers on here like no way out and down. then there are the mellow acoustic songs like Sour Girl and I Got You. The clincher for me is the final track Atlanta. It's very Jim Morrison sounding. This whole CD rocks and I command you to get it!!! Submitted by Craig (Indiana, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
EQUAL TO CORE This album is just as good as Core...even the laid back mellow songs are great...don't listen to the close minded people on here because songs like Atlanta are great...if you like Core you'll like this IT ROCKS Submitted by Jon (Jackson TN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
THE SLOW SONGS ARE GOOD TOO This cd is good, a vast improvement over Tiny Music. They rock hard and rock soft and they do both very well. How can you be a fan of STP, or good music in general, and not like "Atlanta"??? It's one of STP's best tracks. Submitted by karl (Illinois) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Realy Rockin' This is one of STPs best. The first 7 tracks are incredible. And so is track 10. While sone songs are much weaker than some of their other stuff (songs like sour girl),other song are some of their hardest, most rockin'songs they have ever made (Down, pruno). Altogether a very solid album! Yo! Submitted by squatch1 (E Stoudsburg, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Pilots Have Crashed! This doesn't even sound like stp anymore, sounds like some hippie, flower power, bright sunshine and rainbows garbage. Basically its sounds like "lady picture show" (a terrible song from tiny music that somehow people liked) STP is offically dead. Submitted by John P. (Oshawa Ontario, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? No. 4
$8.79 PURPLE includes "12 Gracious Melodies," an uncredited hidden track at the end of the record.
Stone Temple Pilots' second album, PURPLE, meshes guitar rock with grunge, and forges deeper into hard rock territory. Lurching out of the speakers with aggressive bottom-heavy rock, PURPLE is an example of what brought guitar-oriented rock back into the spotlight in the nineties. The 5 songs are driving, stripped to the basics of guitar, bass, and drums. PURPLE exemplifies straight ahead rock.
Embracing styles from grunge to late-1960s hard rock, Stone Temple Pilots are a band accomplished at writing abrasive rock songs, but aren't afraid of quieter acoustic melodies. The album starts with the menacing ...
| | Stone Temple Pilots Tiny Music...Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop CD (1996)
No. 4
$9.59 "Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
On their third album, Stone Temple Pilots distance themselves from the grunge movement that was their springboard into the multi-platinum neighborhood. From the onset, TINY MUSIC... finds the group dabbling with their sound; "Press Play," a one-minute instrumental rides a slinky funk groove, juiced along by returning producer Brendan O'Brien on Fender Rhodes piano. From here, the DeLeo brothers and drummer Eric Kretz show a willingness to musically experiment with Beatlesque songs ("Lady Picture Show"), a Leon Redbone-like ...

"Californication" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and for Best Rock Song.
CALIFORNICATION finds The Red Hot Chili Peppers once again in the more straightforward punk-funk mode of BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK. This return to their original sound also marks the return of prodigal son John Frusciante, who takes over for his replacement, Dave Navarro. The Chili Peppers fill CALIFORNICATION with material shaped by personal and professional ...

In the time following the disintegration of Nirvana, Dave Grohl worked hard at establishing the Foo Fighters. The release of the band's third album was a triumph that came on the heels of a label switch, Grohl's divorce, and the departure of three band members. Despite all the chaos, the former Nirvana skinbasher managed to record a collection of songs that meld the power of his punk roots with ...

No. 4
$9.29 Falling between the eclectic expanse of 1996's TINY MUSIC and the dark heaviness of 1999's NO.4, SHANGRI-LA DEE DA vacillates between extroverted frontman Scott Weiland's wistful musings and guitarist Dean DeLeo's weighty riffs. Drawing from real-life trauma and hardship caused by his self-destructive tendencies, Weiland's ...
