Recorded in 1971, CHIEFTAINS 3 builds upon and refines the style laid out by its two predecessors, adding a few new wrinkles to the Irish band's traditional sound. The biggest addition this time around is the first in a long line of guest artists--Pat Kilduff, who adds lilting (a type of wordless Celtic vocalizing in which the singer imitates the sound of a fiddle, similar to scatting in jazz) to the sprightly reel "The Hunter's Purse" and the slide "Merrily Kiss the Quaker." The rest of the album is the Chieftains' usual expert blend of traditional jigs, reels, marches, airs, and slides, mixing tunes both familiar and obscure, arranged by Paddy Moloney for various combinations of instruments. The overall highlight is "The Trip to Sligo," a bold exploration that supplants a time-honored song with an increasingly complex set of harmonic variations.

While the film was a spectacular flop and perhaps the most embarrassing project that McCartney has ever been involved with, GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADSTREET's soundtrack album features some exceptionally good music. An Irish harp player/composer who lived from 1670-1738, Turlough O'Carolan was as important to instrumental Irish/Celtic folk as Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven were to European classical music. Regrettably, he made no recordings -- recording technology wasn't invented until the late 19th century, and O'Carolan lived in a time in which electricity, radios, television sets, trains, planes, cars, and computers had yet to be invented. But while O'Carolan's time wasn't technologically advanced by today's standards, it was culturally rich -- and O'Carolan, an amazingly prolific composer, provided many charming melodies that continue to excite Celtic artists in the 21st century. Assembled by the Maryland-based Maggie's Music in 2002, this compilation finds various artists embracing gems that O'Carolan wrote centuries before they were even born. Carolan's Gift contains 14 tracks, and the Irishman wrote hundreds of pieces when he was alive. But if Carolan's Gift barely scratches the surface, it is an appealing surface. Someone who has never heard any of O'Carolan's melodies could easily become an admirer after hearing the Celtoiri Celtic Ensemble on "Mary O'Neill, Maggie Sansone on "Bridget Cruise," or Sue Richards on "Miss Murphy," "Fanny Poer," and "Mabel Kelly." If you notice that many of these instrumentals are named after women, it is no coincidence -- O'Carolan often named his songs after women who gave him work. Presumably, Mabel Kelly and Mary O'Neill were women who lived in Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries. Carolan's Gift certainly isn't the last word on O'Carolan's legacy, but it is among the CDs to start out with if you're interested in exploring his work. ~ Alex Henderson

Brett Smiley was a legend in glam rock circles, but a legend only to those who lived through the times or fanatically dug through old, yellowed copies of Melody Maker, NME, and Disc, seeking to re-create the times. Such is the fate of a singer whose only album was shelved following a disastrous performance of a heavily hyped single. Smiley deserved better, but fate has been kind to him, since his longstanding cult reputation led to the much belated but still celebrated release of his scrapped 1974 album, Breathlessly Brett, on RPM in 2003. Its release was tied into RPM's Lipsmackin' 70s series, which debuted with Velvet Tinmine, a collection of glam and glitter singles forgotten to all but die-hard record collectors. Smiley comfortably fit into this category, of course, and his storied bomb, "Va Va Va Voom," received its CD debut there, whetting the appetite for this disc. Everybody who's heard the collection or the single will know what to expect, and will be delighted with what they get -- a fabulously fey, coyly campy, and smashingly swishy glam pop album; it's Bowie and Bolan filtered through Judy Garland and performed by the prettiest boy to sigh into a microphone in the '70s. These are precisely the ingredients for a cult classic, of course, but it's hardly something that would have burned up the charts, unless it hit at precisely the right moment and was sold to the hilt. Smiley did have Andrew Loog Oldham, the man who sold the world the Rolling Stones in the '60s, behind him, producing his record, pushing his image, and selecting his material. Oldham often had his finger on the pulse of pop currents and his genius was promotion, but he was simply off here. He was a little late on the glam bandwagon, he relied too heavily on Smiley's gorgeous visage, he bizarrely encouraged ...
