Collective Soul wasted little time following up 1999's DOSAGE, but BLENDER doesn't feel rushed in any way. The band has softened its touch, leaning more towards mid-tempo modern rock and keeping the harder-edged material in the background.
Ed Roland and company immediately start you guessing with a kind of technical Jekyll and Hyde game--BLENDER leads off with the first two tracks, "Skin" and "Vent" featuring programmed drums; acoustic drums don't appear until the crunchy "Why Pt. 2." This is one of the album's most puzzling aspects, but after a few listens, it doesn't really undermine BLENDER's overall strength. From the funky syncopation of "Boast" to the borderline adult contemporary balladry of "10 Years Later," Collective Soul doesn't disappoint, especially with "Perfect Day," featuring a solid cameo from none other than Sir Elton John.

Rolling Stone (10/26/00, p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...BLENDER simply shreds with unapologetic classic-rock energy....making you pay homage to the Mount Rushmore-like solidity of rock stripped to hard-hitting essentials..." Collective Soul Blender Songs Blender Music Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews One of the best while driving in the car, it rocks Sure, it's different from their early stuff, but wow it's great. This has more synth along with layered vocals and quick guitar riffs, and the songs are more melodic and subtle. But just put this CD or Dosage in the car, you'll see what I mean, it makes you love to drive with it. Musically their CD Dosage, made around the same time frame, is also in the same style and equally terrific in the car. These are unique in their career since they went back to their more early straight up rocking sound with the subsequent CD's but later kept the synth, vocal and melodic approach that differs a bit from the early stuff. Anyway, this CD sparkles, when I put it on in the car, it stays on the player for weeks. Haven't gotten tired of it or Blender yet after nearly 10 years of driving with them when I'm in the mood for a rocking CD. Listen to the singing and sing along with the great melodies (no one will hear you in your car, it's ok) and you'll notice Ed Roland really did some cool things vocally on this and Blender, and has improved a lot as a singer. And of course,Ross Childress is an exceptional guitar player whose awesomely beautiful and creative riffs are unique and stirring, I can only think of Martin Barre from Jethro Tull for an apt comparison of such a creative, melodic, and sizzlingly hot rocking sound. I think these Blender and Dosage show him at the peak of his inventive sparks of fire and beauty, more subtle than the early edgier stuff. Don't drive without this CD and Dosage, under the influence of this rock you'll drive better, well if not better, with a lot more fun while trekkin' to the usual or unusual places you go. | | Weird Al Yankovic CD (1983)
Blender
$7.59 Like an X-ray of a dinosaur egg, this debut Weird Al Yankovic production provides a detailed glimpse of the creature to be grown. "Another One Rides the Bus" is the earliest of his arena rock parodies, recorded in 1980 during an on-air appearance on the Dr. Demento show and a classic piece of musical humor. Already he had developed his knack of knocking the wind out of any pretentious, overblown rock anthem by slightly adjusting the lyrical content. Once one of these songs was describing the boring, mundane activities of the non-rock star, it was if a new life were born within the song. "My Bologna" demonstrated the concept as applied to the fine art of making the stupid much stupider. A later album title by this artist would be Dare to Be Stupid, and if the Knack's "My Sharona" had to be sacrificed at his creative altar for this to be understood, so be it. Once parodied by Yankovic, a song can never be thought of in the same way again. "I Love Rocky Road" brilliantly trivializes both rock & roll and the idea of singing about loving it. If one is going to sing about loving something, let's make it be something important -- like a horrible ice cream flavor. Unfortunately, the album doesn't really get off on the right foot with "Ricky." Yankovic hadn't quite fine-tuned his skills of parody to the point where he could pull off connecting the new wave Toni Basil number with Lucille Ball's situation comedy, and the results are contrived and not particularly funny. This is also the best way to describe his original material, which was used in a smaller proportion in all his later albums than it is here. His original songs may not seem like they were written in ten minutes, but the ideas behind them don't seem to involve that much contemplation. As a result, they are like little bits of puff, produced so expertly they seem like some kind of ultimate filler, except that their impact on the flow of an album side is more like ballast. The defense that Yankovic's material is best understood by his main target audience, 11-year-old kids, washes no better than they do. Kids this age really don't like his original material as much as his parodies, although a few years down the road he managed to come up with at least a few of his own songs that were acceptable to what has to be the fussiest audience imaginable. Since the originals tend to dilute the excitement of any Yankovic album, the titles ...
