Like Tori Amos's 1992 EP CRUCIFY, 1996's five-track HEY JUPITER is made up of a remixed title track, plus other none-album selections. While the earlier EP primarily features covers, HEY JUPITER includes live material. The remixed version of "Hey Jupiter" contains different background music from the original (which is included on BOYS FOR PELE), while in-concert versions of "Sugar," "Honey," "Professional Widow," and a beautiful reading of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" make HEY JUPITER a highly recommended purchase for Tori disciples everywhere.

"Caught a Lite Sneeze" seems to have been selected as the lead single from Boys for Pele by default. It's the most accessible song on an extremely challenging and esoteric album, but it is hardly the most listener-friendly song she's written. It mixes uptempo drum programming, harpischord riffs (isn't that an oxymoron?), and Tori Amos' wailing vocals. The lyrics convey the emotional sting caused by Amos' difficult breakup with former producer Eric Rosse. ("Didn't know our love was so small... I need a big loan from the girl zone.") This song stands in sharp contrast to the rest of the EP -- four silly songs that illustrate Amos' whimsical and playful side more directly than anything on her other albums. On the swanky "What I Like Mick," the most successful of the four, Amos professes undying love for "cheese and onion sandwiches and derby chinaware." Two tracks later on "Toodles Mr. Jim" she assumes the role of a little girl cheerfully lamenting the death of an adult friend named Mr. Jim. Clearly this is not the usual angst-driven Tori Amos fare. Given Tori's penchant for writing and recording a song in one take, it's probably safe to assume that both "Toodles" and the lesser "Graveyard" were improvisations. The same might be true of her take on "This Old Man," which uses the same slow and solemn solo piano sound Amos used in her B-side covers of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Over the Rainbow," and "Home on the Range." That particular gimmick is getting a little old, and the disc as a whole feels much more thrown together than previous EPs. It is, however, worth a listen for anyone curious about what a silly Tori Amos song might sound like. ~ Evan Cater

Jaed is Vanessa Eve Morphea from Melbourne. She plays guitar. And sings. Her biog comes with a parental advisory sticker, as do her uncompromising lyrics which bitterly document a young life of abusive father, drugs and sex. Having been rumbled for 'holding up a taxi driver at scissor point' she was eventually caught stealing from her local record store. The owner took pity and introduced her to big time Aussie producer Baz Palmer (Hunters and Collectors). She unwittingly became the star of a prime time documentary series last October in Australia, based on the developing artists of producer Palmer. She came to England, put together the amazing 3-piece that is Jaed, and signed.

If PET SOUNDS is the Beach Boys' full-length studio masterpiece, then "Good Vibrations" is the distillation of everything the group had accomplished up to that point into three minutes and 30 seconds of pop majesty. With the group's trademark harmonies buoyed by a pulsing organ riff and what has to be the most recognizable Theremin hook in the history of pop music, "Good Vibrations" is pop music at its most cerebral and most enjoyable.
