Bad Company's second release, STRAIGHT SHOOTER, stays true to the bare-bones flavor of the band's stunning self-titled debut. While the group was one of rock's first supergroups (with members from Free, King Crimson, and Mott the Hoople), Bad Company was the antithesis of the pretentious excess that is usually associated with such formations. STRAIGHT SHOOTER exemplifies the band's no-frills approach: blues-based rock & roll distilled down the bare framework.

The album spawned a handful of FM radio staples, starting with "Feel Like Makin' Love," a prototype power ballad that served as a template for a legion of '80s rockers. The wistful "Shooting Star" revealed a softer side to the band's usual hard rock dynamic that was seldom seen but just as effective. The charging "Good Lovin' Gone Bad" was yet a third car radio favorite that further established the band as masters of the art of chugging riffs and firmly ensconced backbeats. The overlooked ballad "Call on Me" closes the album with a gentle vocal by Paul Rodgers, who by this album's release was firmly established as one of the premiere rock vocalists of the '70s.

Recorded on Ronnie Lane's Mobile at Clearwell Castle, Gloucestershire, England in September 1974.

Digitally remastered by George Marino.

Q (12/94, pp.157-8) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...STRAIGHT SHOOTER refined their irresistibly commercial melodic hard rock into perfectly consumable bite-size chunks, mixing up vigorous dandruff-shakers like `Good Loving Gone Bad'...with more contemplative material like `Anna'..."

3 stars Still in good company!
How can a band make one perfect album following another one? Well, Bad Company did THREE perfect albums! Their first three releases still rock! If you want to have the best from the 70's... Bad Company definitely is a must have. Three classic albums like no other band.

4 stars Straight Shooting Backbeats, Riffs, Rythmns and Vocals
This is possibly seen by most followers of the band as the best one. It continues the fantastic feeling of rocking rythmn and blues laid out for our enjoyment in their first self titled album. Whether it be one of the rockers or ballads in the set you are always treated to a song that has been thoughtfully put together with the a view that it must flow with no low points to have the listener drop their attention. This has been achieved by the use of background vocals when needed and piano to assist with carrying the melody even though the backbone of Bad Company is a driving bass and drums with fantastic licks that gets the feet and air-guitars moving stongly. The only exception is what sounds like a slight vocal strain during the ballad "anna", but this CD is a must for followers of the band and those who appreciate this era of music. Definately a 4 to 4.5 out of 5.

THE ORIGINAL BAD CO. ANTHOLOGY includes several previously unreleased tracks including four tracks recorded in 1998. Recorded between November 1973 and November 1998. Includes liner notes by John McDermott. Digitally remastered by Steve Croxford, Jack "Jacko" Adams, and Walter Coehlo 1974's BAD COMPANY laid the groundwork for much of the mainstream hard rock that would dominate FM radio and album sales in the 1970s and '80s. In contrast to the expansive canvases of psychedelic music and the virtuoso excesses of prog rock, Bad Company's debut stripped the blues-rock model down to its essentials, playing muscular, amped-up power chords over driving 4/4 beats. Though the singing of vocalist Paul Rodgers (who had previously been in the blues-based ...

After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation. The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff ...

In 1977, the German label Hansa held a contest that elicited entries from over 1000 bands. The eight winners, including Japan (and an unknown group called the Easy Cure who later became the Cure) received recording contracts and, a year later, ADOLESCENT SEX hit the shops. Perhaps because of its glamrock-esque cover art (this at the height of the first wave of English punk rock), it was largely ignored. The band's vocalist David Sylvian is legendarily unhappy with the record, and it is possible to guess why: it contains some fairly misguided lyrics--especially on "Wish You Were Black." The album probably seemed pretty edgy and hip at the time, however, complete with its truly odd version of a Barbara Streisand standard, "Don't Rain on My Parade," complete with "ooo-eee-ooo" backing vocals. The record does contain at least two lasting classics: the title track, with its growling "Just keep on dancing" lyric, brittle guitar shards, and punchy rhythm section, and "Communist China," featuring several of Sylvian's early vocal experiments. However, as with all of Japan's albums, the unsung star is Mick Karn's stunningly versatile bass playing, and that is more than enough reason to disagree with Sylvian. The second Japan album followed their debut by a mere six months and, like its predecessor, the cover art suggested glam-rock. In the heady days of punk, it was largely ignored in England, but the band did begin to find acceptance in Japan--surprise, surprise! Mick Karn's elegant, flexible bass playing is more prominent, and David Sylvian's vocals settled on a very Bowie-esque style--circa THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD. With these elements ...
