Swamp Gold, Vol. 1 contains a number of early zydeco and New Orleans R&B cuts by the likes of Phil Bo, Rockin' Sidney, Jonnie Allan, Rod Bernard, Irma Thomas and Warren Storm. All of the music here is tremendously exciting, and some of it -- such as Lil' Bob and the Lollipops' "I Got Loaded," and Johnnie Allan's "Lonely Days and Lonely Nights," and Irma Thomas' "It's Raining" -- is genuinely classic, making the record a necessary addition to a New Orleans musical collection. ~ Thom Owens

The title on this two-CD set is more than a little unfair -- in fact, it's downright inaccurate. For Collectors Only is one of the more impressive collections of material by this celebrated R&B vocal group, consisting entirely of songs cut for George Goldner's Gone Records, which was their most successful commercial period and arguably represents the group's best years. The 42 songs here include three tracks ("I'll Be Home," "A Kiss from Your Lips," "Lovers Never Say Goodbye") which are either previously unissued outtakes or previously unreleased altogether, and they're icing on the cake. At first glance, this 30-track compilation of Dale Hawkins' late-'50s and early-'60s Checker sides might seem like a preferable collection to MCA's briefer (18-song) best-of. Actually, however, this only repeats 11 of those 18 tracks, with the emphasis on some cuts that haven't been on CD before, as well as no less than eight previously unreleased songs. It's hard to figure if this was meant as a best-of compilation or just a disc that mixes some of his biggest and best singles with obscure items; the omissions of "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby" (which is on the MCA collection) alone prevents this from being definitive. Hard to believe the Roomates have been around so long that almost as much time has passed since their formation and the doo wop era they so superbly resurrect. While their revivalist compatriots were busily bringing rockabilly back to life in the mid-'80s, this group of friends turned even further back into the past for inspiration. Surprisingly perhaps, considering the adoration their elders held for African-American R&B, the Roomates preferred white doo woppers particularly Dion & the Belmonts and the sound of the stellar Laurie label. But, as Steve Webb explains in the sleeve notes, what drew them to the Belmonts was their more egalitarian distribution of vocals between the lead singer and the harmonizers. And the Roomates certainly share the lead around, with only Mark Webb, Steve's brother, choosing not to step out into the limelight. A couple years before OutKast's Dré and Big Boi diverged creatively while retaining their group identity, 4hero's Dego and Marc Mac took up a similar division of labor. The initial result, 2001's mostly brilliant Creating Patterns, was even more elaborately musical and past-indebted than 1998's Two Pages, despite continued protests from those who had come to demand nothing less than renegade innovations. The detractors will only continue to feel betrayed by Play with the Changes. Despite six years away and a long list of extracurricular projects, including DKD's Future Rage and the 4hero Life: Styles mix, the album is Creating Patterns' twin. You could even look at a thorough description of Creating Patterns, switch around some pronouns, and have a fairly accurate perception of the album's makeup. Marc Mac again helms classicist songs that take cues from the work of Charles Stepney and the Mizell Brothers, with sky-high production values and ample string arrangements.
