Nine Lives
$13.85 The Boogie Kings were away from music for 22 years before making a triumphant return in 1991. Since then, they've burned up the South Louisiana circuit with a sturdy blend of modern R&B and blues-tinged material, plus surging traditional numbers. This program shows that they're better at zydeco than R&B and soul covers, at least in the studio; their versions of James Brown's "I Feel Good," Johnny Ace's "Pledging My Love" and Sam And Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin'" don't lack earnestness or effort, but aren't exactly distinguished. Main vocalist Duane Yates seems more at ease and isn't plagued by comparisons to superior singers. The group is instrumentally quite effective; they stumble at times, but The Boogie Kings mostly acquit themselves well. ~ Ron Wynn
The Boogie Kings are one of the most enduring bands of all time, having performed for 54 years and still going strong. You will understand why when you listen to the music. The marriage of Country and ...
| | Boogie Kings Swamp Boogie Blues CD (1996)
Nine Lives
$13.79 One of many releases in the 1990s renaissance of the swamp blues group the Boogie Kings, Swamp Boogie Blues is a hugely satisfying and enjoyable selection of swamp blues, expertly played by a band at the peak of their powers. Indeed, it's hard to remember when the Boogie Kings sounded so alive as they do on this record -- the playing, especially on classics such as "I'm Not a Fool Anymore" and "Promised Land," is sensitive -- but it's the simple joy of making music that comes across more palpably. A relaxed confidence is the result, and Swamp Boogie Blues stands as one of the defining albums of the swamp blues revival. ~ Thomas Ward
It has often been a standing rule of thumb that when you re record a tune that was such a big hit that it becomes a "sacred cow" and should not be redone because the cover will never live up to the original hit. The Boogie Kings broke all of the rules and re recorded all of these hit songs with the original artists and the result was a best selling South Louisiana project. Check it out and you will see for yourself. This CD has quickly become a collector's ...
| | Edgar Winter Jazzin' The Blues CD (2004)
Nine Lives
$14.49 This set of Edgar Winter's jazzy remakes of older tunes and some new ones is all over the place. With a cast that includes guitarists Robben Ford and Hiram Bullock, Steve Lukather, and Michael Hakes, and bassists like Will Lee, Mark Meadows, and Tom Lilly, as well as trumpeter Lee Thornburg, one gets exactly what one expects: a slick, groove-infested ride through Winter's past and present. Winter himself plays alto saxophone, keyboard and sings in places. He also acts as the album's producer, which is not a good thing. Other than the Hammond B3, the keyboards sound like bad 1980's sci-fi soundtrack-reject mixes, and the arrangements on some of the tunes border ...
| | Levon Helm Dirt Farmer CD (2007)
Nine Lives
$15.05 Though the Band are often discussed in terms of their contributions to musical Americana, drummer Levon Helm was in fact the only American-born member of the group, and his Dixie-fried, high lonesome lilt was one of the keys to their proto alt-country sound. On his 2007 solo release, DIRT FARMER, Helm returns to his roots and indulges ...

Unlike most of the Madacy collections on the market, the Best of Blues set consists of mostly high-quality blues recordings from some of the biggest names in the genre. Many different aspects of the blues are here, from the delicate piano ballads of Billie Holiday and Ray Charles to the rock/blues rave-ups of Rare Earth and John Mayall to the traditional guitar-based work of B.B. King and Buddy Guy. Some incredible songs are unearthed for this collection too, like Charles Brown's guitar workout "Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand," Howlin' Wolf's incredible stop-and-start crawler "Ain't Superstitious," and Leadbelly's depressing race relations tale "The Bourgeois Blues." While many ...
