The Boogie Kings were away from music for 22 years before making a triumphant return in 1991. Since then, they've burned up the South Louisiana circuit with a sturdy blend of modern R&B and blues-tinged material, plus surging traditional numbers. This program shows that they're better at zydeco than R&B and soul covers, at least in the studio; their versions of James Brown's "I Feel Good," Johnny Ace's "Pledging My Love" and Sam And Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin'" don't lack earnestness or effort, but aren't exactly distinguished. Main vocalist Duane Yates seems more at ease and isn't plagued by comparisons to superior singers. The group is instrumentally quite effective; they stumble at times, but The Boogie Kings mostly acquit themselves well. ~ Ron Wynn
The Boogie Kings are one of the most enduring bands of all time, having performed for 54 years and still going strong. You will understand why when you listen to the music. The marriage of Country and Soul makes a perfect union. Check it out!

Purchase Louisiana Country Soul CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ozark Mountain Daredevils Time Warp: The Very Best Of... CD (2000)
Louisiana Country Soul album
$11.99 Digitally remastered by Jim Phillips (Universal Mastering Studios West, North Hollywood, California).
Although it omits three songs from the far less comprehensive (and deleted) 1983 12-track Best Of, and doesn't include any live or post-A&M music, this 2000 release stands as the final word on the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' career. Cherry-picking 21 tunes from their five studio album stint circa 1974-1978 -- with the lion's share coming from their first three albums and only three selections from the final two -- this is pretty much all you'll need from the under-recognized band that worked in the '70s country-rock shadows of Poco and Firefall, but weren't as dependable or pop savvy as either. In fact, their biggest hit, the Hall & Oates, blue-eyed soul-styled "Jackie Blue," was so atypical of the band's characteristically down-home approach that it ultimately ...

| | Aretha Franklin Delta Meets Detroit: Aretha's Blues CD (1998)
Louisiana Country Soul songs
$5.95 The title may be ARETHA'S BLUES, but this compilation goes far beyond such a simple designation. This selection of early Atlantic material finds Franklin mixing gospel with the deep soul of her Muscle Shoals back-up crew on tracks like "Today I Sing The Blues." On "Pitiful," she swings with a big band horn arrangement that wouldn't sound out of place on a Ray Charles record.
Franklin's passionate singing style easily allows her passage to the deep pathos of the blues. Both Percy Mayfield ("River's Invitation") and B.B. King ("The Thrill Is Gone [From Yesterday's Kiss]") are given their due. She tackles country material such as Willie Nelson's "Night Life" and makes it her own. Even the covers of "You Are My Sunshine" and "Night Time Is The Right Time" easily stand toe-to-toe with Brother Ray's better-known versions. Franklin's gospel roots are never far away as feisty back-up singers and stride piano (often played by ...
| | John Mayall Godfather Of British Blues/The Turning Point CDs (2004)
Louisiana Country Soul album
$11.49 What a strange artifact this is. The music on this two-CD collection reflects the soundtrack to the first ever "rockumentary," made by British filmmakers Pete Gibson and Alex Hooper about John Mayall's complete about-face in 1969, on the tour that showed him transitioning from his grand electric blues bands that featured superstar guitarists like Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor -- as well as bassist John McVie -- to a band of then-relative unknowns who played the blues (largely) acoustically, while exploring extended improvisation like a chamber jazz group. The band, with Jon Mark on acoustic guitars, Mayall on harmonica, vocals, and acoustic guitar, Johnny Almond on flute and saxophones, electric bassist Steve Thompson, and no drummer, turned the entire notion of blues-based rock on its head. While the recording side of this was documented on the album The Turning Point, the soundtrack offers a version of how the music worked in live settings. Disc one offers a teaser of Mayall's Blues From Laurel Canyon version of the Bluesbreakers in the final moments of wailing through "Parchman Farm." from a May 9, 1969 gig in Birmingham. Mayall was no stranger to the raw power of the electric blues with thundering guitars. At ...
