There was a time, back in its early days, when Little Feat was a country-rock band, perhaps THE quintessential country-rock band. While other contenders for this mantle leaned heavily in one direction or another, Little Feat truly mixed equal parts country twang and experimental rock. Each of the group's first three albums--LITTLE FEAT was their debut--point to how great country-rock might have become, if only (1) country rockers were as brilliant as Lowell George, and (2) fans had shown the slightest interest in the genre as Little Feat created it.

Fortunately, before the band moved onto the fusion-inspired funk with which it made its mark, the early Little Feat left a wonderful recorded legacy. LITTLE FEAT is a prime example of that. From the slide trill that kicks off the first track, the album alerts listeners that they are about to experience something raw and wonderful. The album rocks hard, occasionally boogies, intermittently slows down to shed some tears, and always, always swings. The lyrics don't always make sense, but it hardly matters: all the meaning you need can be found in George's growling vocals and screaming guitar.

Live Recording

Little Feat: Lowell George (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Bill Payne (vocals, keyboards); Roy Estrada (bass instrument, background vocals); Richard Hayward (drums, background vocals).

Additional personnel: Ry Cooder (guitar, bottleneck guitar); Sneaky Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar).

Rolling Stone (2/4/71, p.58) - "...quite a complex group, with many extraordinary things to say...searing guitar...earthy, just-right lyrics...Little Feat's music is tight, complex, and moving..."

4 stars Solid Debut
Terrific little rock band, Little Feat. They got bigger but here's where it started. Lowell George and Bill Payne could both be stars in their own rights. Includes the original version of Willin' with Ry Cooder on guitar. This gem stands the test of the time and still holds up well.

5 stars Quite A Feat, A Very Willin' Debut
The first Little Feat album is a grossly ignored classic and was a commercial dud, selling only 11,000 copies. A pity, as it contains some potent gems. The sound is a bit raw, but that quality gives the album an earthiness that is appealing. The musicianship and arrangements are tight, considering that the majority of the tracks clock in under three minutes. Lowell George and Billy Payne prove themselves to be superb, although a bit unorthodox, songwriters and performers and Roy Estrada and Richie Hayward provide an able rhythm section. Ry Cooder makes an appearance contributing some very competent slide guitar. If you own all the Feat catalogue, there's no reason to pass this one up. Every new artist should hope to be so good their first time out...and after repeated listenings....I believe that Feat accomplished this feat (no pun intended) quite admirably.

Little Feat Sailin' Shoes CD  (1972)

Little Feat album
CD $5.99  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Though it seemed difficult for Little Feat to improve on their first album, SAILIN' SHOES does exactly that. Building on the bluesy feel of the debut, SAILIN' SHOES is more varied, with radio-ready country-rock ("Easy to Slip"), lilting downhome ballads ("Trouble"), rave-up rock numbers ("Teenage Nervous Breakdown"), and quirky, lounge-cool blues ("Texas Rose Café"). Little Feat mastermind Lowell George is the pen and the voice behind all of these tunes, and SAILIN' SHOES shows him hitting his stride as a songwriter of great originality and appeal. At his best, as on the gospel-inflected title cut, and "Willin'," one of his best known and most loved tunes, Lowell seems to tap into the heart of American song, pushing familiar buttons, yet keeping things thoroughly fresh and original. This--along with the band's tasty playing and lockstep grooves--was always the appeal of Little Feat's good time, downhome vibe: this is roots music with a smart, quirky twist. SAILIN' SHOES is an essential Little Feat recording (alongside its successor, DIXIE CHICKEN), and shows Lowell and company at their finest. Little Feat: Lowell George (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Bill Payne (vocals, accordion, keyboards); Roy Estrada (bass instrument, background vocals); Richard Hayward (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Ron Elliott (electric guitar); Sneaky Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar); Milt Holland (percussion); Debbie Lindsey (background vocals).

Little Feat Dixie Chicken CD  (1973)

Little Feat CD music
CD $5.95  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
DIXIE CHICKEN is the first album by the most enduring Little Feat line-up: Kenny Gradney replaced departed bassist Roy Estrada, and New Orleans musicians Sam Clayton and Paul Barrere rounded out the new group. This line-up went through periodic break-ups and reunions until the death of Lowell George in 1979. The great Neon Parks album paintings were anticipated almost as much as the next collection from Little Feat, the band with which his work became inextricably linked. This album found them at a musical peak as a stellar 70s rock band who had oodles of swamp blues and funk, with a loose shambling style that spoke of confidence rather than sloppiness. Lowell George was singing better than ever on this collection, notably with the sublime "Roll Um Easy," where his voice was chillingly expressive. Bill Payne and Richie Haywood play their respective keyboard and drums with calm and precision. There are no weak tracks here, and this is another vital album, in keeping with all recordings that featured George. Little Feat: Lowell George (vocals, guitar, cowbells); Paul Barrére (vocals, guitar); Bill Payne (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Richard Hayward (vocals, drums); Kenny Gradney (bass instrument); Sam Clayton (congas). Additional personnel: Fred Tackett (acoustic guitar); Malcolm Cecil (synthesizer); Milt Holland (tabla); Dan Hutton, Tret Fure, Gloria Jones, Debbie Lindsey, Stephanie Spurville, Bonnie Bramlett, Bonnie Raitt (background vocals).

On the heels of DIXIE CHICKEN, arguably Little Feat's finest moment, came this superb collection of country-fried grooves and good times. Even leaner and more energetic that DIXIE CHICKEN, FEATS DON'T FAIL ME NOW injects higher doses of rock & roll and country boogie into the group's rootsy aesthetic. Bandleader and lead songwriter Lowell George plays less of a determining role here, contributing two songs of his own (including the lushly funky "Spanish Moon," which features some killer horn charts) and co-writing four others (including the in-concert classic "Rock & Roll Doctor"). But while George takes a step back, the band sounds tighter, sharper, and better than ever. The dance-oriented direction is perfectly broached: in-the-pocket drumming, burbling bass, crying guitars, and wiry synths (note the delicious groove of "Skin It Back") merge beautifully with the band's dusty, back porch origins. Little Feat would stick to the easy country funk refined on this album for the rest of their career, and though the diminishing role of George would later hurt the band, FEATS DON'T FAIL ME NOW is one of the last recordings on which everything worked in perfect synchronicity. Liner Note Author: Lowell George. Little Feat: Lowell George, Paul Barrére (vocals, guitar); Bill Payne (vocals, keyboards); Sam Clayton (vocals, percussion); Kenny Gradney (bass instrument); Richard Hayward (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Gordon de Witty (Clavinet); Emmylou Harris, Fran Tate, Bonnie Raitt (background vocals).

The two bonus tracks are from the live album WAITING FOR COLUMBUS. Many remember their Little Feat albums by which wonderful Neon Park illustration was on the cover. The famous giant jelly graces this one. The music within is equally delectable, with the horizontal mambo on 'Romance Dance' and 'All That You Dream', as they celebrate by singing 'I've Been Down But Not Like This Before'. The album's star is the tear-jerking, beautiful ballad 'Long Distance Love'. Very probably Lowell George's greatest song, its gentle understatement and simplicity is pure genius; 'ah her toes were so pretty, and her life so sweet'. An essential Little Feat album. The CD reissue contains two extra tracks from the live album Waiting For Columbus. Little Feat: Lowell George (vocals, slide guitar); Paul Barrere (vocals); Bill Payne (keyboards, vocals); Ken Gradney (bass); Richie Hayward (drums, vocals); Sam Clayton (congas). Additional personnel: John Hall (guitar); Valerie Carter (background vocals).

Little Feat Time Loves A Hero CD

Little Feat album
CD $13.95  3.7 stars Audio Samples
The Lowell George-fronted version of Little Feat pretty much reached the end of its tether with TIME LOVES A HERO. George had become disenchanted with the slicker, jazzier sound that keysman Bill Payne and guitarist Paul Barrere were moving towards (exemplified by the jazz-rock instrumental "Day at the Dog Races" and the Steely Dan-meets-Doobie Brothers "Red Streamliner"). George had dialed down his compositional input, and consequently, the bluesier, grittier elements of the the band's sound. This was to be the last Feat album released in George's lifetime; he died in 1979, shortly after dissolving the band. Recorded in Hollywood and Sausalito, California. Little Feat: Lowell Guitar (vocals, guitar, slide guitar); Paul Barrere (vocals, guitar); Bill Payne (keyboards, marimba, background vocals) Ken Gradney (bass); Ritchie Hayward (drums, percussion, background vocals); Sam Clayton (congas, percussion; background vocals). Tower Of Power: Lenny Pickett (alto saxophone); Emilio Castillo (tenor saxophone); Steve Kupka (baritone saxophone); Mic Gillette (trumpet, trombone); Greg Adams (trumpet).
French Cooking
Paris Reunion Band French Cooking CD  (1987)

Little Feat CD music
CD $8.79  Audio Samples
Jazz journalist Mike Hennessey was responsible for putting together the Paris Reunion Band, a group of jazz all-stars who spent at least part of their careers based in Paris. Their debut album, French Cooking, was a studio date recorded in the summer of 1985, around the time of their first European tour. The band includes saxophonists Johnny Griffin and Nathan Davis, trumpeters Woody Shaw and Dizzy Reece, trombonist Slide Hampton, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Jimmy Woode, and drummer Billy Brooks. Most of the musicians made names for themselves while living in their U.S. homeland (except for Reece, a Jamaica native). Nathan Davis is probably the least familiar name in the front line, because he spent a long period in Paris (1962-1969) following his discharge from the U.S. Army, and eventually returned to his homeland to become a jazz educator. He is a triple threat on tenor and soprano saxes as well as flute. Each member of the brass and reed sections contributed a cooking original to the date, while the solos and ensemble work are consistently inspired. Though the personnel changed somewhat after this initial recording, the Paris Reunion Band would continue to work off and on until 1989. ~ Ken Dryden Recording information: Sonet Studios, Stockholm, Sweden (07/03/1985). Photographer: Maurice Bernaudon. Personnel: Nathan Davis (flute, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone); Dizzy Reece, Woody Shaw (trumpet); Slide Hampton (trombone); Kenny Drew (piano); Billy Brooks (drums). Before the Black Crowes hit big with their sleazy Stones rock, the Georgia Satellites were letting it rip with the same formula, albeit it with a rougher, almost punk edge similar to the Replacements'. Although the Satellites released a total of four albums during the '80s, only their self-titled debut remains in print, so the 1993 compilation LET IT ROCK: THE BEST OF is of interest to the serious fan as well as the newcomer. At a whopping 20 tracks in length, LET IT ROCK shows that there was much more to the Georgia Satellites than just their two biggest hits, "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" and "Battleship Chains." LET IT ROCK: THE BEST OF is a solid set from beginning to end. Possibly the biggest star ever in his native Cuba, and a major player as a singer, songwriter and bandleader throughout the Latin world, the amazing singer on some of Perez Prado's biggest hits, leader of his own combos, and a heartthrob superstar solo singer, Beny dominated the world of Mambo singing from the 1940s on. Beny More is, in short, the greatest singer of popular music Cuba has ever produced. Experience the greatest hits of Beny at his peak! Rev-ola. 2006.

Lou Reed American Poet CD  (2001)

Little Feat album
CD $11.65  4 stars Audio Samples
Recorded live at the Hempstead Theatre, New York, New York in 1972. Includes liner notes by Carlton P. Sandercock. Finally, this is an official release of the December 26, 1972, performance of Reed on a New York radio show, which had been floating around on numerous bootlegs for many years. The sound is at least as good as it's been on any of those bootlegs. As for the music, it's inarguably among the finest of Reed's solo work, released or unreleased. The set's split evenly between the Velvet Underground classics and highlights from Reed's early solo albums, with backing by the Tots, the group of unknown musicians who played with him in concert during the period. The fidelity is very good, Reed's singing is great, and the band plays in a raw and urgent manner that Reed should have employed on his solo albums, but didn't. The Velvet Underground songs are well-done and considerably different from the originals, and the versions of solo classics like "Vicious," "Walk on the Wild Side," "I'm So Free," "Berlin," and "Satellite of Love" slay the studio takes to shreds. If you're looking for one interesting bonus that doesn't seem to have made it onto many of the prior bootleg releases of this material, there's a brief interview with Reed in which the naïve-sounding DJ asks him where Doug Yule is. "Dead, I hope," Reed deadpans, to sincere gasps of shock from the audience. For those who take their Reed seriously, that one moment might actually make this CD worthy of purchase, even if they already have the music on bootleg. This is essential for Reed fanatics, though it's unfortunate that the liner notes are poorly written and poorly proofread, with no details about the show itself, instead offering a general history of his activities in the early '70s. ~ Richie Unterberger Collection from the talented and moody Rock icon featuring Lou performing tracks from his solo career and his days with Velvet Underground plus an interview with the man himself. Tracks include 'Sweet Jane', 'Vicious', 'Walk On The Wild Side', 'I'm Waiting For My Man' and others. 12 tracks. Superior. Liner Note Author: Carlton P. Sandercock. Reggaeton is a type of Spanish language dance music developed in Puerto Rico in the mid-1990s. It has now become popular in other Latin American countries. Reggaeton - also spelled ReggaetĂłn and hispanicised as ReguetĂłn - blends dancehall and hip hop genres, with additional influences from electronic, bomba, plena, and other styles. This gives Reggaeton its distinct Latin touch.Reggaeton songs cover topics ranging from the realities of street life to personal misunderstandings, gangs, love, and dancing. It is a very popular choice of music in parties and is usually danced by members of the opposite sex grinding "doggie style". Reggaeton can also be danced with the partners facing each other, or in large groups of single dancers (usually females), where one of the group will then be asked to dance and will then leave the group.

Guitar Therapy Live
Mike Keneally Guitar Therapy Live CD  (2006)

Little Feat album
CD $14.55  Audio Samples
Since 2004's Dog was the hardest rocking album Mike Keneally had released up to that point, it came as no surprise that the subsequent tour ("Guitar Therapy") had the band "bringing the rock" to venues across the U.S. Keneally's a monster guitar player with an utterly personal style, and his songwriting is equally idiosyncratic, to say the least (just check out the very weird "Spoon Guy"). He's got a band who can easily negotiate the trickier musical passages as well as follow his lead when it comes to dynamics or improvisation, all the while flat-out rocking. Guitar Therapy Live is a great document of what these guys can do on any given night. It's got a raw, live sound with clearly separated guitars and everything mixed loud. In his always-entertaining liner notes, Keneally comments that he was "overplaying on every single solo," which, of course, is pretty much what Keneally fans are after. They won't be disappointed. Following "Quimby," the customary opener, the band launches into a hot version of "Panda" that's got the first of many killer guitar solos. Then it's a tough version of another bizarre Keneally gem, "Lightnin' Roy." Second guitarist Rick Musallam gets a wonderful wet tone on that one, then cuts loose with a great solo on Bryan Beller's "Seven Percent Grade," while Keneally temporarily moves over to keyboards. The way the guitars are recorded and separated gives the listener a chance to hear just how good a player Musallam is, since it was sometimes difficult to pick out his parts on Dog. Drummer Joe Travers and bassist Bryan Beller play like a rhythm section who've been friends for 20 years or so (they have), and nowhere is that better exemplified than their "Purple Lagoon" interlude and breakdown in the middle of "Uglytown" (which also features nice dueling guitar leads). "Hum" is another instrumental tour de force, with Keneally switching between guitar and synth (or playing them at the same time!) and Musallam contributing another fine solo. These are but a few highlights among many on this recording. Keneally's playing throughout is so impressive, people might be surprised that he used to consider himself "a keyboard player who plays some guitar." This is a tight band who sound like they really enjoy playing together, and that comes through loud and clear. Keneally's music isn't for everyone: it can be challenging, difficult, and just plain weird. It can also be joyous and transcendent, and almost always displays jaw-dropping musicianship. Sampling from each of his albums except the orchestral one, Guitar Therapy Live is a celebration of the Keneally songbook and guitar indulgence, and fans of either one or both are sure to enjoy it. [The deluxe edition contains a DVD featuring their performance at the Baked Potato, where the majority of the CD was recorded.] ~ Sean Westergaard Mike Keneally Band: Bryan Beller (bass instrument); Mike Keneally, Rick Musallam, Joe Travers.
