Composer: Joni Mitchell. Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); Joni Mitchell; Sneaky Pete Kleinow (guitar, steel guitar, pedal steel guitar); Stephen Stills (guitar, bass instrument, bass guitar); James Taylor Jr. (guitar); James Taylor (vocals, guitar); Russ Kunkel (drums). Recording information: A & M Studios, Los Angeles, CA; A&M Studios, Hollywood, CA; A&M, Los Angeles, CA. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Sad, spare, and beautiful, Blue is the quintessential confessional singer/songwriter album. Forthright and poetic, Joni Mitchell's songs are raw nerves, tales of love and loss (two words with relative meaning here) etched with stunning complexity; even tracks like "All I Want," "My Old Man," and "Carey" -- the brightest, most hopeful moments on the record -- are darkened by bittersweet moments of sorrow and loneliness. At the same time that songs like "Little Green" (about a child given up for adoption) and the title cut (a hymn to salvation supposedly penned for James Taylor) raise the stakes of confessional folk-pop to new levels of honesty and openness, Mitchell's music moves beyond the constraints of acoustic folk into more intricate and diverse territory, setting the stage for the experimentation of her later work. Unrivaled in its intensity and insight, Blue remains a watershed. ~ Jason Ankeny BLUE marks the culmination of Mitchell's early, traditional singer/songwriter period, and it is one of the very best albums of that genre. Though she was already beginning to experiment with elements of pop and jazz, BLUE focuses on Mitchell's skill as a folk singer, showcasing her reedy, expressive voice in duet with her piano or guitar. The arrangements on the album--which feature keys, dulcimer, bass, and assorted percussion--are spare and tasteful, so much so that it is easy to overlook their sophistication. Yet it is ultimately Mitchell's songs that make BLUE such a moving and memorable experience. "All I Want" establishes the themes of wandering and soul-searching that define much of the artist's work, while "My Old Man" and "Carey" explore relationships with a keen attention to detail and emotional truth. Songs like "California" shuffle along with a sunny yearning, but the predominant mood--true to the album's title--is lonely, plaintive and stark, with "River," the title track, and "The Last Time I Saw Richard" ranking with the saddest, most moving songs in the pop canon. An album of great intensity and confessional depth, BLUE closed the chapter on Mitchell's folk period beautifully, opening the gates for the bold new work to follow.

Blue Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Joni defines blue in her own elements-high notes and creativ Blue is great CD to analyze. At first listen, it's hard to catch what Joni is Blue about. Her voice is so angelic and fun that one tends to overlook the darkness of some of her lyrical phrasing. The title track is full of emotion, power and thirst. It's obvious that Joni was full of love and trials. Joni tops off this incredible album with "The Last Time I Saw Richard." What an excellent summary of an excellent album- "only a phase, these dark cafes." Submitted by wl_jefferies (Atlanta, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Blue is "pure" Joni... For anyone who is a purist and appreciates the artist and her guitar, Blue is a perfect album. I always just allow it to carry me away every time I listen to it. From her soul searching in "My Old Man" and "This Flight Tonight" to her relationship conundrums in "River" and "A Case of You", this album never disappoints. The special treat for me remains in her story telling rendition of "The Last Time I saw Richard", delivered in her so utterly unique style. Do yourself a favor and get "Blue"....you won't be. straight to the top i considered myself a joni fan and had a half dozen albums but not "blue". so when i finally got it i could rank it against all those other joni albums which i adore. after one play "blue" headed the list. it is astonishing, it has the most tender song ever written, "little green" and how about those lyrics in "all i want"!!!! thats love, warmth, truth and an overlooked quality of joni's - humour, all in one song...this album is essential (why did i leave it so long) Submitted by tony (london, england) Was This Review Helpful? great songs I have had a copy of "Blue" for many years, but it was a bad tape recording, so I was pleased to finally get the CD. Every song is beautifully performed, lots of feeling, great lyrics, and although it was recorded some years ago, it remains one of my all time favourites. Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Larry Carlton (acoustic & electric guitars); Abe Most (clarinet); Neil Young (harmonica); Chuck Findley, Tom Scott (horns); Victor Feldman (vibraphone); Jaco Pastorius, Max Bennett, Chuck Domanico (bass); John Guerin (drums); Bobbye Hall (percussion). Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Joni Mitchell's Hejira is the last in an astonishingly long run of top-notch studio albums dating back to her debut. Some vestiges of her old style remain here; "Song for Sharon" utilizes the static, pithy vocal harmonies from Ladies of the Canyon's "Woodstock," "Refuge of the Roads" features woodwind touches reminiscent of those in "Barangrill" from For the Roses, and "Coyote" is a fast guitar-strummed number that has precedents as far back as Clouds' "Chelsea Morning." But by and large, this release is the most overtly jazz-oriented of her career up to this point -- hip and cool, but never smug or icy. "Blue Motel Room" in particular is a prototypic ...

Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); Joni Mitchell; Stephen Stills (vocals, various instruments, guitar); Tommy Scott (clarinet, reeds, woodwinds, saxophone); Tom Scott (reeds, woodwinds, wind); Wilton Felder (bass instrument); Bobbye Hall, Bobbye Porter (percussion); Graham Nash (vocals, harmonica); James Burton (guitar, electric guitar); Bobby Notkoff (strings, percussion); Russ Kunkel (drums). Recording information: A&M Studios, Hollywood, CA. Photographer: Joel Bernstein. Unknown Contributor Role: Stephen Stills. On For the Roses, Joni Mitchell began to explore jazz and other influences in earnest. As one might expect from a transitional album, there is a lot of stylistic ground explored, including straight folk selections using guitar ("For the Roses") and piano ("Banquet," "See You Sometime," "Lesson in Survival") overtly jazzy numbers ("Barangrill," "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire," and hybrids that cross the two "Let the Wind Carry Me," "Electricity," "Woman of Heart and ...
| | Joni Mitchell Clouds CD (1969)
Blue
$6.09 Live Recording
Personnel includes: Joni Mitchell (vocals, acoustic guitar). Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Clouds is a stark stunner, a great leap forward for Joni Mitchell. Vocals here are more forthright and assured than on her debut and exhibit a remarkable level of subtle expressiveness. Guitar alone is used in accompaniment, and the variety of playing approaches and sounds gotten here is most impressive. "The Fiddle and the Drum," a protest song that imaginatively compares the Vietnam-era warmongering U.S. government to a bitter friend, dispenses with instrumental accompaniment altogether. The sketches presented of lovers by turns depressive ("Tin Angel"), roguish ("That Song About the Midway"), and faithless ("The Gallery") are vividly memorable. Forthright lyrics about the unsureness of new love ("I Don't Know Where I Stand"), misuse of the occult ("Roses Blue"), and mental illness ("I Think I Understand") are very ...
| | Joni Mitchell Ladies Of The Canyon CD (1970)
Blue
$8.99 Live Recording
Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, piano); Theresa Adams (cello); Paul Horn (flute, clarinet); Jim Horn (baritone saxophone); Milt Holland (percussion). This wonderfully varied release shows a number of new tendencies in Joni Mitchell's work, some of which would come to fuller fruition on subsequent albums. "The Arrangement," "Rainy Night House," and "Woodstock" contain lengthy instrumental sections, presaging the extensive non-vocal stretches in later selections such as "Down to You" from Court and Spark. Jazz elements are noticeable in the wind solos of "For Free" and "Conversation," exhibiting an important influence that would extend as late as Mingus. The unusually poignant desolation of "The Arrangement" would surface more strongly in Blue. A number of the selections here ("Willy" and "Blue Boy") use piano rather than guitar accompaniment; arrangements here are often more colorful and complex than before, utilizing cello, clarinet, flute, saxophone, and percussion. Mitchell sings more clearly ...
