Lightfoot's commercial peak came with this album, which topped the US charts, containing both the #1 title song and the Top 10 hit "Carefree Highway." But songs like "Somewhere U.S.A." and "High and Dry" are textured, catchy folk/rock on a par with the better known tunes. ~ William Ruhlmann By the mid-1970s, Gordon Lightfoot had become a full-fledged pop star, a staple of AM radio, and a regular denizen of the Billboard charts. While his production sensibilities at the time had expanded a bit by the time of SUNDOWN, he was never a folk purist to begin with, and it's a superficial distinction at best. What's important is that Lightfoot's songwriting acumen actually grew with his fame. "Circle of Steel," for example, is a cutting sociopolitical commentary that he probably wouldn't have been able to turn out a few years earlier. On the other side of the fence, the casual sensuality of the title track would have stuck out like a sore thumb on Lightfoot's earliest, more mannered albums. The easy blend of folk and pop on the hit "Carefree Highway" represents the unique paradigm that was always at the heart of both Lightfoot's gift and his wide appeal.
Live RecordingQ (7/93, p.109) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...By 1974, and SUNDOWN, Lightfoot was an international draw...all [songs] lyrically acute and tuneful to a fault, in places warmly embracing country..." Gordon Lightfoot Sundown Songs Sundown Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Sundown Perhaps Lightfoot's Best This album is one of those that you can put on and not hear a bad song. Gord was in his writing and singing prime on Sundown. Another great thing about this album is that, even though it was recorded on analog tape back in the bad old days, all of the instruments sound great, especially the acoustic guitars. Sundown and CSN's debut album are two of the best acoustic guitar recordings in my opinon. This one is a keeper. Submitted by a reviewer (Raleigh, NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? A Classic Troubador Nary a bad song on this album...GL was a rare artist who grew better as he got more exposure. Many fine songs on this record, but the one that stays in my head is "Too Late for Prayin'". What a great song...it still sends chills up my spine. Take a listen to one of the great troubadors of modern music...you'll be enthralled by his talent. Submitted by Frank (Corva, Italy) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Another masterpiece by the master musician Sundown is definitely one of his best works written and performed during his prime years. All the melodies and words are exceptional. You don't get tired of listening to them because they stand the test of time. I can't say enough of his talents and abilities. The songs soothe and bring contentment. If you haven't obtained this one, you are missing out. Submitted by rebid (Chubbuck, ID) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Lee Hazlewood Requiem For An Almost Lady CDs (1971)
Sundown
$12.95 Personnel: Lee Hazlewood (vocals); Jerry Cole (guitar, sitar); Joe Cannon (guitar, harmonica). Recording information: Hollywood, CA (06/1971). Arrangers: Donnie Owens; Jerry Cole; Lee Hazlewood. Requiem for an Almost Lady is the rarest of Lee Hazlewood's albums because it was released in 1971 exclusively in Sweden (where Hazlewood also completed his cult classic Cowboy in Sweden album) and the United Kingdom. The album is one of the most beautifully agonizing breakup records to ever hit wax, culled from a composite of Hazlewood's relationships gone wrong. Spoken word introductions precede each of the ten brief songs and reveal Hazlewood's poetic soul, while the songs themselves are full of longing and witty, clever cynicism coupled with a sad-eyed idealism that paints the music as even more visceral and grievous. Hazlewood spares none of his past ...

2 original albums on 1 CD: SINCERELY(1976) / TWILLEY DON'T MIND(1977). Liner Note Author: John Dowler. Recording information: 03/1975-04/1876. Before going solo, Dwight Twilley released two classic albums as the Dwight Twilley Band (which was basically Twilley, Phil Seymour, and a whole lotta power-pop hooks). This budget-priced package combines the two LPs, from 1975 and '77 respectively, and contains Twilley's strutting signature hit, "I'm on Fire." Like Badfinger, Big Star and the Scruffs, Dwight Twilley was one of the few icons of power pop who was clearly not new wave. Twilley and his musical partner Phil Seymour were pop classicists who cut their teeth on the Beatles (they supposedly met at a screening of A Hard Day's Night), and while their love of rockabilly and Southern soul added a welcome grit to their music, their ideal wasn't to move music into the future so much as to reclaim rock's noble past, and their best music manages to capture a taste of mid-'70s swagger alongside hooks that would have done any Merseyside boys proud. Twilley and Seymour made their definitive musical ...
