Easily the moodiest album in a career not lacking in that quality, ZUMA is a swirling, hypnotic current that drags you into river of self-doubt, bitterness and fear. This is the sound of the '60 gone sour. All the peace-and-love vibes Young dabbled in with Buffalo Springfield and CSNY crash to the ground, and the strange, beautiful sound they make is ZUMA.
It's only through the good offices of Crazy Horse that Young is able to keep the somber, droning quality of these tunes going for an entire album without a moment of boredom. On the unforgivingly sarcastic "Stupid Girl" and the paranoid "Cortez the Killer," it's the languid air of acceptance with which Young delivers the lyrics that draws you in, but it's the twisting thorn bush of electric guitars that keeps you focused. Hidden amidst all this emotional turmoil is one of Young's most poignant, trenchant and concise pop gems, "Don't Cry No Tears."

Think of this album as a "transition" period for Uncle Neil and Crazy Horse; power guitars to carry you back in time in "Cortez the Killer", and sweet throwback harmonies to soothe in "Pardon My Heart". Perhaps the most accessible piece of work Neil Young ever released...Those unfamiliar with Neil Young's work might like to start right here!

Man, I just heard this album for the first time today! I always considered myself a Shakey fan for years, but it's official now that I've heard this! If you're gonna buy Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, buy this one too!! You WILL NOT be disappointed! Don't Cry No Tears, Lookin' For A Love, Barstool Blues, Cortez The Killer, all on one album, this is gold! Buy it! Buy it NOW!

Neil's best Year Ever!
I would have to rate this collection ahead of havest. Hell,the only album better than this one is After the goldrush, making this the best Crazy horse album ever. I would love to debate any Neil Young fan that 1975(the year of this release)as being the most memorable year of his etire career. It amazes me that he came out with Tonight the night along with Zuma within six months. Both albums represent a major achievement, but Zuma ranks ahead as a unique masterpiece! Check it out.

This is probably not the best Neil Young-album but it is probably not one of his worst either, it`s somewhere in between. The album is mostly electric but there are two great acoustic songs as well. For the beginner it`s not the album to buy because it`s pretty edgy and the singing is sometimes out of tune so if you are not used to Neil buy Harvest or something like that at first, or buy my favorite Rust never sleeps which is half acoustic and half electric and see which Neil you like the most.

one of my favorites
I'm so burnt out on this album(after 20 years)I don't listen to it anymore because,someday,I want it to sound as refreshing as it did the first time I heard it at age sixteen.This is a good album for when the sun is going down and you are tired of life.I've heard Neil say "Don't Cry No Tears"was one of the first songs he wrote when he was a kid-That sets a pretty high standard for any songwriter.EVERY song on ZUMA is essential Neil Young and Crazy Horse.Go ahead and buy it and listen with an open mind!

At its deepest and most thoughtful recesses, the ensemble on "Pamela's Holiday," with help from percussionist Mahindi Masai, doles out a modal undercurrent grafted onto a light Afro-Cuban rhythm, and produces some extraordinarily beautiful sounds. The title track swings with a fervor Bechet, Goodman, or DeFranco would stop and take notice of. "Gonna Take You Out" is a jumpy kind of funk, while a nice Latin flavor spices the lone standard "My Shining Hour," arranged by Cassius Richmond.
