Funk masters Tower Of Power's tight, funky sound is in high gear on BUMP CITY, one of the group's strongest efforts. Containing several TOP hits, including concert favorite "You Got To Funkifize" and the classic "Down To The Nightclub," this is one of the best examples of Oakland's favorite sons in their stride. Other cuts, like the down-and-dirty "You Strike My Main Nerve" and the bluesy shuffle "Flash In The Pan," couple the funky power of the original Prestia-Garibaldi rhythm team with those signature TOP horns.
Singer Rick Stevens also shines on such ballads as "What Happened To The World That Day" and the moving hit "You're Still A Young Man," yet another classic from the group's early days. In all, BUMP CITY is guaranteed to funk you into bad health and make you crave that Oakland stroke more than ever.

RICK STEVENS IS THE MAN THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS TOWER OF POWER HAS PUT OUT. RICK STEVENS IS BY FAR THE BEST VOCALIST TOP HAS EVER HAD. IT'S TO BAD THAT HE ONLY RECORDED ONE ALBUM AS THE LEAD SINGER. RICK STEVEN'S VOCALS WAS THE PERFECT FIT FOR THE TOP SOUND (NOT TOO HIGH AND NOT TO LOW)AS IN FUTURE ALBUMS, MANY OF THE VOCALIST'S VOICES WERE TOO HIGH FOR THE MASCULANE SOUND OF THE TOP HORNS. The Best LP ever from Tower of Power I am a die-hard Tower of Power fan and in my humble opinion, this album is their best ever (even after 31 years)! To my knowledge, this was their second album as a group ("East Bay Grease" being the first). It is my all-time favorite because, not only are the horns slammin (as always), but Rick Stevens' vocals provided that wide range necessary to convey the funk (check out "You've got to Funkifize" "Flash in the Pan" "Bump City" and "Skating on Thin Ice) and soul ("What happened to the World" "You Strike my Main Nerve" and the classic "Your Still a Young Man"). I know Lenny Williams was the lead vocalist when TOP went hit it big, but in my book, Rick Stevens was their best lead singer (Rufus Miller coming in second). Steven's voice was powerful enough to complement the TOP horns, which is a necessity when you're talking TOP! But wait! There's more! Skip Mesquite's mesmerizing dedication to Jacqueline Mesquite titled "Gone" is one of the most beautiful, soulful tributes I've ever heard. I included this on a home-made compilation cassette of quite-time, easy-listening, music for the soul. The rhythm section of Francis Rocco Prestia, Willie James Fulton (are those powerful names or what?), Brent Byars and David Garibaldi are phenomenonal. I remember playing this album over and over again so I could isolate each of the musicians sounds. Even the album cover (Lightening Chicken-Fist) is a classic. I used to draw it and give it to my friends. Bottom Line: This is true TOP: Funky, Greasy, Soulful and Slick. You've got to Funkifize and get this...it's the East Bay way! | | Steve Laputa Guitars & Christmas Trees CD (2004)
Bump City
$11.39 Attention: This is not your Grandparents Christmas music!(But they might like it too!)Steve Laputa is a RAMI award winning guitar player based out of Rockford, Illinois that has been playing for many years mainly in Illinois but also has performed around the Midwest, Florida and Las Vegas. He has also performed with several acts that have received local music awards. Steve's style is mainly classic blues based Rock but occasionally incorporates elements of pure Blues and Country. His style is smooth and flowing, not finger athletics. From what I have heard here, Steve isn't a too bad bass guitar player either.Guitars & Christmas Trees is an upbeat, rocking guitar driven instrumental Christmas CD. The songs are Steve's own versions of well-known Christmas tunes. All are instrumental with the exception of Run Rudolph Run which adds guest vocalist Linda Greenwood. All drums by Kurt Wiesand except for Run Rudolph Run which features Todd Greenwood. If you like upbeat rock guitar music order Guitars & Christmas Trees early for your holiday parties. You and your friends will not be bored!Review by D. Longhorn-----------------Reviewed by Gary HillRockford guitarist Steve Laputa has put together a CD whose title both does a great job of getting you ready for the music within and also is a nice creative twist. The cover is much a similar twist, and both of these things fit very well with the music contained within. Laputa works guitar magic around Christmas favorites, both old standards and more modern rockers. The end product is one that will be a nice addition to your holiday celebration.A lot of instrumental music these days gets a little boring. Laputa definitely avoids this (although, technically this isn't an entirely instrumental album because one track has vocals) by changing up the style drastically from song to song. Make no mistake, Laputa's guitar rules the day on all the tracks, but he shows a mastery of a number of varying musical textures that lends a variety to the disc that works well. He also shows a strong dedication to creating songs rather than extended guitar solos - another trap that much instrumental rock runs into. The music here wanders between good old-fashioned rock and roll, rockabilly, hard rock and even country. The result is a CD that will have you both in the Christmas spirit and stomping ...
