The Doobie Brothers: Pat Simmons, Tom Johnston (vocals, guitar); Tiran Porter (vocals, bass instrument); John Hartman (drums, percussion); Michael Hossack (drums).
Additional personnel: Dave Shogren (vocals, guitar, bass instrument); Bill Payne (piano, organ).
Toulouse Street was the album by which most of their fans began discovering the Doobie Brothers, and it has retained a lot of its freshness over the decades. Producer Ted Templeman was attuned to the slightly heavier and more Southern style the band wanted to work toward on this, their second album, and the results were not only profitable -- including a platinum record award -- but artistically impeccable. Toulouse Street is actually pretty close in style and sound at various points to what the Eagles were doing during the same period, except that the Doobies threw jazz and R&B into the mix, as well as country, folk, and bluegrass elements, and (surprise!) ended up just about as ubiquitous as the Eagles in peoples' record collections, especially in the wake of the singles "Listen to the Music" and "Jesus Is Just Alright." But those two singles represented only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what this group had to offer, as purchasers of the album discovered even on the singles -- both songs appear here in distinctly longer versions, with more exposition and development, and in keeping with the ambitions that album cuts (even of popular numbers) were supposed to display in those days. Actually, "Listen to the Music" (written by Tom Johnston) offers subtle use of phasing and other studio tricks that make its seemingly earthy, laid-back approach some of the most complex and contrived of the period. Johnston's "Rockin' Down the Highway" shows the band working at a higher wattage and moving into Creedence Clearwater Revival territory, while "Mamaloi" was Patrick Simmons' laid-back Caribbean idyll, and the title tune (also by Simmons) is a hauntingly beautiful ballad. The band then switches gears into swamp rock for "Cotton Mouth" and takes a left turn into the Mississippi Delta for a version of Sonny Boy Williamson II's "Don't Start Me Talkin'" before shifting into a gospel mode with "Jesus Is Just Alright." Johnston's nearly seven-minute "Disciple" was the sort of soaring, bluesy hard rock workout that led to the group's comparison to the Allman Brothers Band, though their interlocking vocals were nearly as prominent as their crunching, surging double lead guitars and paired drummers. And it all still sounds astonishingly bracing decades later; it's still a keeper, and one of the most inviting and alluring albums of its era. ~ Bruce Eder
The Doobie Brothers shuffled personnel a bit after their debut album, changing bass players and adding a second drummer. For whatever reason, this sophomore effort was the one that kicked off their long streak as one of the most popular bands in America. The basic sound of TOULOUSE STREET isn't really all that different from the Doobies' previous effort. There's a similar mix of acoustic guitars, gospel harmonies, and overall post-hippie mellowness.
This time out, however, the songs have hooks as well as grooves. TOULOUSE STREET produced the chugging and eminently infectious "Listen to the Music," the Doobies' breakthrough hit single. Other highpoints include the anthemic "Rockin' Down the Highway," which quickly became a radio staple; a considerably juiced-up version of the Byrds' "Jesus is Just Alright;" the lovely, CSNY-inspired title song; and a nice cover--with horns--of Sonny Boy Williamson's blues classic "Don't Start Me Talkin'." Producer Ted Templeman gave the band a cleaner, harder-edged sound, and helped bring the band's unique mix of roots rock, gospel, country, jazz, bluegrass, R&B, swamp boogie, and pop hooks into perfect focus.

Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) 4 stars

5 stars A GREAT ALBUM!
This is the second album by the original musicians...I played many a selection from this record on several AOR and TOP 40 radio stations in the South Central Texas area during the 70's through the early 90's. A couple of big hit TOP 40 tunes, as well as very soulful and simply good rock 'n' roll hard hitting numbers make this CD very important for Doobie Brother music collectors. The rating says it all, people...5 BRIGHT ONES!!!

5 stars The best was live
One of the best Rock albums of all times has become somewhat hard to find in local stores and on line. Most of it's contents are available on "best of / compaltion cd's",but none of those can fully capture the "moment" of the piece in it's entirety. I was a little disapointed with the sonics of this cd. The vinyl actually sounded better after comparing the two. Maybe the record company will clean it up when they decide to do a box set.

On 2008's THE FOUNDATION, singer/guitarist Zac Brown leads his ensemble on a vibrant set of country-rock. While the Georgia-based performer is clearly comfortable with ballads (see his emotive cover of Ray LaMontagne's "Jolene"), he seems most at home on twangy, carefree tracks such as "Toes," "Chicken Fried," and "Sic `Em on a Chicken."

UP AND AT EM' (2001 release): Harmonica driven genre defying tunes with a bit of blues, jazz, world music, Latin, bluegrass, tex Mex - Listen in! Get ready to trash all you thought you knew about the harmonica. Eclectic is the name of the game here with this release being more a showcase for Carlos' different playing styles. Featuring his band which includes the amazing Kevin Breit on guitars.UP AND AT 'EM CD REVIEW Continuously, delJunco is moving away from blues in it's strict form. It is amazing to learn how easily he is crossing musical borders. On this one he brings us bluesy, rock, jazz standards, modern jazz and fusion, and anything in between. He's one of the greatest stylists when it comes to innovative harmonica blowing. Harpplayers: listen carefully - this man's got something to say. Perfect recording and high level musicianship throughout. Country in surname only, Shooter Jennings dashes comparisons to his father Waylon's chosen genre on LIVE AT IRVING PLAZA by bringing the ruckus. The tunes feel like roots rock--the roots being Skynyrd, Black Oak Arkansas, and even at times Steve Earle. Jennings, like fellow fortunate son Hank Williams III, filters those roots through a 1990s alt-rock scope (imagine Everclear or Stone Temple Pilots with twang). But amid the stomp of "Gone to Carolina" and wah-wah blasts of "Electric Rodeo," Jennings offers a break from the power chords on "Lonesome Blues," a countrified reminder that he is indeed That Guy's son.
Shooter Jennings may not be a household name yet, the way his late daddy Waylon is, but he can rock the house and turn it inside out just as well. This 11-cut set was recorded for a Sirius Radio broadcast in the Outlaw Country series -- hosted by Jennings -- at Irving Plaza in New York City. It offers ample evidence that Jennings is a rocker who loves country music; not the other way around. Hell, Kid Rock loves country too so what's the big deal? Jennings adheres to no system, no trend, no set of rules; his .357's make the competition -- from Kenny Chesney's to Steve Earle's Dukes -- sound like pretenders. Jennings rubs people the wrong way, and given this over the top set -- introduced by none other than Little Steven -- it's easy to understand ...
