DIXIE CHICKEN is the first album by the most enduring Little Feat line-up: Kenny Gradney replaced departed bassist Roy Estrada, and New Orleans musicians Sam Clayton and Paul Barrere rounded out the new group. This line-up went through periodic break-ups and reunions until the death of Lowell George in 1979. The great Neon Parks album paintings were anticipated almost as much as the next collection from Little Feat, the band with which his work became inextricably linked.
This album found them at a musical peak as a stellar 70s rock band who had oodles of swamp blues and funk, with a loose shambling style that spoke of confidence rather than sloppiness. Lowell George was singing better than ever on this collection, notably with the sublime "Roll Um Easy," where his voice was chillingly expressive. Bill Payne and Richie Haywood play their respective keyboard and drums with calm and precision. There are no weak tracks here, and this is another vital album, in keeping with all recordings that featured George.
Little Feat: Lowell George (vocals, guitar, cowbells); Paul Barrére (vocals, guitar); Bill Payne (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Richard Hayward (vocals, drums); Kenny Gradney (bass instrument); Sam Clayton (congas).
Additional personnel: Fred Tackett (acoustic guitar); Malcolm Cecil (synthesizer); Milt Holland (tabla); Dan Hutton, Tret Fure, Gloria Jones, Debbie Lindsey, Stephanie Spurville, Bonnie Bramlett, Bonnie Raitt (background vocals).
Rolling Stone (4/12/73, p.58) - "..Little Feat never fail to turn the chances they've taken into smooth successes...audacious, ingenious.." Record Collector (magazine) (p.106) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "Lowell George's best songwriting and maturing leadership were at the heart of the album....Little Feat would never sound as good than they do here." Little Feat Dixie Chicken Songs Dixie Chicken Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) On Your Way Up..... The first Feat album featuring the expanded sextet of George, Payne, Hayward, Barrere, Clayton and Gradney was perhaps their best effort. A brilliant mixture of funk, pop, blues, country and rock, "Dixie Chicken" is the first LF album I purchased and the sound hooked me. Lowell George seemed to have a deep appreciation for the sound of New Orleans and that infatuation permeates the disc from the cover of Allen Toussaint's "On Your Way Down" to the heart-tugging instrumental "Lafayette Railroad" (a homage to the Crescent City that appropriately closes the album) and, of course, Kenny Gradney and Sam Clayton being New Orleans-bred musicians. A great effort, a worthy addition to any rock fan's collection, and sadly,...like Feat's first two albums...a commercial failure. But lo, what an artistic triumph. Easily top five of all time This is one of my top five most favorite albums of all times. It's an important piece, and along with "Feats Don't Fail Me Know", should be required listening for every fan of great music. GET IT. Submitted by rfield54 (Colorado) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Lowell's Feat Little Feat come ino their own and nail their sound down. This album is a triumph. Half the tracks are great songs performed by a geeat band; other tracks explore grooves and are all about the playing. The sheer originality and audaciousness of this work keeps it sounding fresh. Plus, Bonnie Bramlett and Bonnie Raitt sing backup! Redolent of the Meters. Greast feel, great singing, great playing. Five stars all the way. | | Monsieur Leroc Le Slow Motion Boogie Woogie CD (1999)
Dixie Chicken CD music
$11.85 German DJ/producer Monsieur Leroc's debut album is a smooth, funky combination of various late-20th century musical idioms. Combining acid jazz, hip-hop, dub, and downtempo in equal doses, LE SLOW MOTION BOOGIE WOOGIE is an exact description of the type of music Leroc makes. Staying away from downtempo's often-easy slide into grey, depressed regions, Leroc keeps his music sultry, occasionally kinky, and always melodic.
Leroc borrows heavily from jazz as a compositional element, aping the improvisation sequence of each instrument having its say, as on the track "Jazzz." Bachelor pad music surfaces on "Une Boogie Pour Faye," and "I Think I," one of the album's most interesting tracks, steals a vocal scat and electric guitar riff straight out of post-SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER 1970s FM radio. For all intents and purposes, "I Think I" could be the "Pina Colada Song" of the future: equal parts cheese and sincere longing, played out over a thumping bassline.
By blending massive amounts of jazz, funk, R&B, stuff from the 1960's/70's, and some cool old guitar rock, Monsieur Leroc's electro -hip hop - euro - soul - head trip surfaces in the U.S. and is made available for the first time as a domestic release by Cornerstone R.A.S.The funk flavored ethereal sounds of Monsieur Leroc are the sonic equivalent of tapping into the Pythagorean "music of the spheres". Listening to Le Slow Motion Boogie Woogie is like visiting a funk filled Heaven - a perfect place to have an "out of body experience."Monsieur Leroc makes his way from Highmshighm, Germany - somewhere near the Black Forest in France. When asked about how it all started: Leroc responded "I took piano lessons and angeldust when I was little...since that didn't really kick off, I decided to take some jazz lessons."When asked how he usually produces his albums, Monsieur Leroc responded: "I sit in front of the computer, smoking, with my headphones on, all naked, except for the shoes." Fueled by nicotine the unclad Leroc busts out a collection of the funkiest jams this side of the Black Forest using as his medium a Macintosh computer, an Akai S2000 sampler and a Korg 01/W pro X keyboard (collectively and affectionately known as the groove circle). The U.S. release of Le Slow Motion Boogie Woogie includes all the tracks of it's European release, from the lazy synthesizer and drum beat driven opening track Monique's Theme to the retro, soul groove of I Think I and the guitar wacca wacca underwritten, deeply pleasant lo-funk flavored ode to 70's tv cops Starsky & Hutch Funky Schlupfer; plus a special bonus track Apres Ski not found on the European issue. Monsieur Leroc - cosmic art designer by day and naked, cigarette smoking, secret groove circle member by night, mixes it up righteously on Le Slow Motion Boogie Woogie, so do yourself a flavor and give these jazz tranced, slow burning drum beats a place to hang out - in your ...
| | O Sister 2: A Women's Bluegrass Collection CD (2002)
Dixie Chicken music CDs
$14.59 In the wake of the success of O Sister in 2001, the Rounder label wisely decided to follow it up with another collection of bluegrass songs, old and new, performed by female singers and instrumentalists. Though the sound of hard-edged and high-pitched men's voices has almost defined bluegrass music from the beginning, women have made significant contributions as well, though those contributions have not always gotten the recognition they deserved. O Sister 2: A Woman's Bluegrass Collection continues the project of rectifying that oversight, and does so quite nicely by showcasing performances by relative unknowns like Carol Elizabeth Jones and Alecia McKnight alongside such usual suspects as Rhonda Vincent, Claire Lynch, Lynn Morris, and the inevitable Alison Krauss. Stylistically, this ...
