Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals); Jon Lord (piano, organ); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums). Recorded live in Osaka, Japan and Tokyo, Japan on August 16 & 17, 1972. For many fans of Deep Purple, the band was at the peak of its power circa the Machine Head era -- especially on the concert stage. With one live recording from this era already in the shops -- 1973's classic Made in Japan (often considered one of the best-ever live hard rock albums) -- this live "Purple peak" has already been documented long ago. But to commemorate the 25th anniversary of when the group was truly firing on all cylinders, another live set was issued -- 2007's Live in Denmark 1972. Most of Purple's classics are included ("Highway Star," "Black Night," etc.), except for one glaring exception -- "Smoke on the Water" (which at the time of this recording was just beginning to catch fire as one of rock's all-time great anthems and instantly recognizable riffs). However, along with Led Zeppelin, Purple were one of the leading arena bands of the time that featured overindulgent jamming that bordered on mind-numbing, and the proof here is the inclusion of several songs that stretch over the ten-minute mark -- the most glaring perpetrator being a near 25-minute (!) reading of "Space Truckin'." As a result, quite a lot of the original compositions' succinct power gets lost beneath all the blubber. ~ Greg Prato This March 1, 1972 show was filmed by Danmarks Radio, Denmark's national television and radio station. It was eventually released on video, which in turn led to some CD bootlegs of the audio portion of the concert. This double CD is not only legitimate but is an improvement on those bootlegs, as the sound was taken directly from the original video audio reel, and the discs are packaged with eight pages of detailed liner notes. It could be taken as the bridge between Machine Head and Live in Japan, as Machine Head had been recorded just a few months earlier at the end of 1971, but Made in Japan would not be recorded until five months after this Danish gig. Deep Purple fans won't find this on par with either Machine Head or Live in Japan, but those whose purple streak runs deep will probably like this set, as the sound quality's pretty good and not far below official release standard. Just three songs from Machine Head ("Highway Star," "Black Night," and "Space Truckin'") make it in, though, most of the other five tracks coming off Fireball, with a cover of Little Richard's "Lucille" thrown in. That's right, that means that there's no "Smoke in the Water," which had yet to assert itself as a hit single. In the tradition of live albums by loud bands, the performances tend toward the overextended side, particularly "Space Truckin'," which balloons to a 22-minute length courtesy of much noodling jamming. ~ Richie Unterberger Recorded over three nights in August 1972, Deep Purple's Made in Japan was the record that brought the band to headliner status in the U.S. and elsewhere, and it remains a landmark in the history of heavy metal music. Since reorganizing with singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover in 1969, Deep Purple had recorded three important albums -- Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, and Machine Head -- and used the material to buildRolling Stone (5/24/73, p.58) - "..Purple's definitive metal monster, a spark-filled execution of the typical Purple style...volatile stage personalities...technically superior.." Made in Japan! Made of ROCK! Just purchased this cd from cduniverse, I haven't heard this album in a couple of decades... wow. This music smokes from beginning to end. Great way to start an album with Highway Star, great way to end it with Space Truckin'. Favorite tune: Hmmm. hard to choose, they are all good, but here ya' go... Child in Time. Aw, C'Mon To this fan, MIJ is a very good Purple live album. But the "greatest live album ever?" Machine Head was tighter, and a lot less self-indulgent. Hearing MIJ's versions every five minutes on FM radio back then made me appreciate smarter live performances by DP of the same songs - such as on the '74 BBC's King Biscuit Flower Hour. Get MIJ, enjoy the looong versions, overlong noodling solos, and Ian Gillian's screeching-not-singing, but they did do some better elsewhere. Submitted by Nate (Boston, MA) Was This Review Helpful? EL MEJOR DISCO DE LA HISTORIA DEL ROCK. Creatividad, talento, virtuosismo y arte para improvisar son los ingredientes que hacen de éste, el mejor disco de la historia del rock. Submitted by Jorge (Alcoy, Alicante, España) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An excellent example of a live album! In my opinion this is the best live album I’ve ever heard. The songs sound much better live than the studio versions. It begins with one of their most dynamic songs, "Highway Star". It has two perfect solos, one from keyboard player John Lord and the other from electric guitar player Ritchie Blackmore. "Child in Time" is an emotive piece with a brilliant guitar solo and Gillan's voice is really outstanding. "The Mule" has one of my favourite drum solos created by Ian Paice. In "Strange Kind Of Woman" there's a duel to death between Ian Gillan's voice and Ritchie Blackmore's riffs. Deep Purple is a hard rock band but they can also show their bluesy side in "Lazy". "Space Truckin'" is real improvisation and "Smoke on the Water" you know... Submitted by christian_grierson (Madrid, SPAIN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
