Personnel: James Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar); David Crosby, Carly Simon, Graham Nash (vocals); Lowell George, Arthur Adams (guitar); Al Perkins (steel guitar); David Grisman (mandolin); Gayle Levant (harp); Jules Jacob (clarinet, oboe); Nick DeCaro (accordion); David Sanborn (saxophone); George Bohanon, Chuck Findley (horns); Clarence MacDonald (keyboards); Randy Newman (hornorgan); Victor Feldman (marimba, percussion); Andy Newmark (bass, drums); Willie Weeks (bass); Jim Keltner (drums); Milt Holland (percussion, wind chimes); Valerie Carter (background vocals). Recorded at Warner Bros. Recording Studios, North Hollywood, California from February to March, 1975. Gorilla served notice to anyone expecting James Taylor to continue on in the personal, confessional vein of his first few albums that he did not intend to do so. Recording in Burbank with Warners staff producers Lenny Waronker and Russ Titelman, Taylor used a stellar backup band augmented by such guests as Graham Nash and David Crosby (who harmonized on the chart single "Mexico"), his wife Carly Simon, mandolinist David Grisman, saxophone player David Sanborn, Randy Newman on "hornorgan," and Little Feat slide guitarist Lowell George. This team worked on a set of light, pleasant songs that bordered on the generic -- one was called "Music," another "Love Songs" -- but were performed and sung with taste and care. Taylor was relentlessly upbeat; even "Angry Blues," which confessed, "I can't help it if I don't feel so good," didn't sound like things were that bad. But then, these songs didn't seem to be about Taylor, or if they were, as in the extended metaphor of the title track, the connection was so oblique that it was hard to say what the point was. Still, one could glide on Taylor's easy vocals and the band's competence, and Gorilla was an enjoyable listening experience. "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)," the first of a series of bleached R&B covers, became a Top Ten hit, and the album restored Taylor's commercial fortunes, setting him on the steady path he would follow for decades after. But who would have thought only a few years before that the king of the confessional song poets would turn into such a lightweight? ~ William Ruhlmann James Taylor's unique blend of well-crafted songs, meticulous production and heartfelt singing are all in abundance here on GORILLA. Featured are the Taylor originals "Mexico" and "Lighthouse" (both aided and abetted vocally by David Crosby and Graham Nash) and the uplifting, reflective "Music," which delightfully interweaves an orchestral harp in and around the melodic web of Taylor's crystalline guitar patterns. The lush mini-suite "Love Songs" opens with a guitar and clarinet duet and finds James moving ever so discreetly into Gershwin territory. Taylor's take on the Motown chestnut "How Sweet It Is" minted chart-topping gold and thrust the introspective balladeer into the role of hit-making cover artist. James Taylor Gorilla Songs Gorilla Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) A beautiful record! This is probably one of the loveliest releases by a popular artist ever! The hilight for me is probably the vocals (lead and harmony). Of course James Taylor's clear baritone is always a treat, but the carefully crafted harmony parts really give the songs an incredible lift. "Lighthouse" in particular makes the price of admission worth it! Can't go wrong with this one! Submitted by joshviles (Auburn, WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
James Taylor at his best This is by far Taylor's most enticing CD to date. Every
song is a winner. The following standout:
Lighthouse, Love Songs, Sara Maria, Music, I Was a
Fool To Care. The best song on the CD is Wandering.
This is pure Taylor magic. Great arrangement coupled
brilliant production work. This CD is the one to have
in your collection. Outstanding music from one of
Rock's most gifted song writers. Submitted by DJ Rick (Monterey, CA.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

James Changes His Formula "GORILLA" is (in my opinion)a slick album, no doubt about it. The tracks "Music", "You Make It Easy" & "Love Songs" are sheer perfection. The rest of the album is very average and aimed at the "average Joe" market.
This album, to my mind, was the start of James' decline.
Not that he had lost the ability to write great tracks, but he alloed himself to "grow old" and his music started to reflect this. His "image" changed from bare feet, jeans & T-shirt on-stage to pathetic Brooks Bros. crap and slick (ie., boring) session singers when he is such an accomplished artist that he needed none of this. James Taylor never lets you down! This is one of JT's shining moments. I've had the album and the CD for years and still feel the need to play it at least once or twice a week. But then, the man is soo talented how could you not? I suppose I have all the music he ever recorded, but this one is one of my favorites. You just can't beat the song "Mexico"... JT's my hero... He never lets you down. If you're in a bad mood, blue or just unhappy.. he can bring you back to smiles and laughter! He's the greatest! Anyone feeling the same way, please feel free to contact me and we'll chat!

$20.09 Asian import with a bonus all-region DVD featuring a making-of featurette and music videos. It's a bit tempting to peg Green Day's sprawling, ambitious, brilliant seventh album, American Idiot, as their version of a Who album, the next logical step forward from the Kinks-inspired popcraft of their underrated 2000 effort, Warning, but things aren't quite that simple. American Idiot is an unapologetic, unabashed rock opera, a form that Pete Townshend pioneered with Tommy, but Green Day doesn't use that for a blueprint as much as they use the Who's mini-opera "A Quick One, While He's Away," whose whirlwind succession of 90-second songs isn't only emulated on two song suites here, but provides the template for the larger 13-song cycle. But the Who are only one of many inspirations on this audacious, immensely entertaining album. The story of St. Jimmy has an arc similar to Hüsker Dü's landmark punk-opera Zen Arcade, ...
