Live In Europe
Personnel: Al Jarreau (vocals), Tom Canning (keyboards), Lynn Blessing (vibraphone), Abraham Laboriel (bass), Joe Correro (drums). Recorded live in Europe between January and February 1977. All songs written by Al Jarreau except "Rainbow In Your Eyes" (Leon Russell), "Better Than Anything" (David Wheat/William Loughborough), "Look To The Rainbow" (Lane/Harburg) and "Take Five" (Paul Desmond). 2 LPs on 1 CD. Singer Al Jarreau's double album, Look to the Rainbow, is easily the most jazz-oriented of all of his Warner Bros. recordings. Cut shortly before Jarreau permanently switched to a more mundane version of R&B, these performances feature him as a brilliant scat singer (able to emulate practically any instrument) and a superior ballad interpreter. Joined by vibraphonist Lynn Blessing, keyboardist Tom Canning, bassist Abe Laboriel, and drummer Joe Correro, Jarreau is in top form on such numbers as "Better Than Anything," "Look to the Rainbow" and "Take Five." Unfortunately, Al Jarreau essentially started on top, artistically speaking, and has since been intent on emphasizing potential commercial appeal over any possible innovations or chance-taking. ~ Scott Yanow

it's Al Jarreau -- but not enuf of him if you're looking for a good live concert recording . . . don't get this one. back when Al Jarreau "live in Europe" was originally released on vinyl, it was a four-record set. all of the highlights of an AJ concert -- like the way he battles the members of his band -- his voice vs. their instruments -- is CUT from this version. like i said, it's still Al Jarreau and you can't really "lose" with him . . . but this CD was a disappointment. $15.19 After four years of writing my own biog in the third person I have finally decided to write it as myself. I am, after all, a writer of songs and spend hours pouring my heart into my fingers willing them to make some magic on the strings of my guitar and the keys of my piano. Surely stringing some facts and information together shouldn’t be that daunting a task! Yet somehow it is. I have the ability (required in the music business!) to boast about any of my achievements and to exaggerate my less impressive news as somebody else – the imaginary journalist getting the latest story – but telling it all as me seems downright pretentious. At the end of the day I know who and what I am and it’s nothing greater than human! The funny thing to me is that when there’s a news and creativity drought, like the time after my second single ‘It’s Alright’ was released and the hype had died down, you stand there fleshing out the lean pickings of information - ‘Yeah, I’m up the walls at the moment, writing like there’s no tomorrow!’ - and when something big really does happen, like when I was asked to tour with Michael Bolton in the UK and America or when my first single ‘Right Back at the Start’ was play-listed by almost twenty radio stations across Ireland, you do the opposite and play it down - ‘Sher I’m kept going thank God, how about yourself?’. One of the things I strive to be is a doer and not a talker. Nevertheless, in terms of an upcoming gig or release the odd reminder to the press and public does no harm! I’ve always lacked a sense of ‘limits’ in terms of what is achievable in my field. I don’t know if that’s a good thing ...
