Personnel includes: Van Morrison (vocals, acoustic guitar); John Platania (guitar); Jack Shrorer (saxophone); Jeff Labes (keyboards); Garry Malabar (drums). Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar, tambourine); John Platania (guitar); Collin Tilton (flute, tenor saxophone); Jack Schroer (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Jeff Labes (piano, Clavinet, organ); John Klingberg (bass instrument); Gary Mallaber (drums, percussion); Guy Masson (congas); Jackie Verdell, Judy Clay, Emily Houston (background vocals). The yang to Astral Weeks' yin, the brilliant Moondance is every bit as much a classic as its predecessor; Van Morrison's first commercially successful solo effort, it retains the previous album's deeply spiritual thrust but transcends its bleak, cathartic intensity to instead explore themes of renewal and redemption. Light, soulful, and jazzy, Moondance opens with the sweetly nostalgic "And It Stoned Me," the song's pastoral imagery establishing the dominant lyrical motif recurring throughout the album -- virtually every track exults in natural wonder, whether it's the nocturnal magic celebrated by the title cut or the unlimited promise offered in "Brand New Day." At the heart of the record is "Caravan," an incantatory ode to the power of radio; equally stirring is the majestic "Into the Mystic," a song of such elemental beauty and grace as to stand as arguably the quintessential Morrison moment. ~ Jason Ankeny It's unusual for a decade-defining record to come out in that decade's first year, but that was clearly the case with MOONDANCE. While it would have been one of the finest albums of any decade, it clearly marked a turning point both for Van Morrison and for rock as a whole. Coming after 1968's expansive, acoustic, jazz-inflected ASTRAL WEEKS, MOONDANCE marks a complete about-face: instead of looking inward to the depths of his soul, Van turned his gaze towards sunnier climes, offering up a seamless disc of tightly composed and arranged tunes brimming with warmth and energy. Here the R&B influence that had been part of Morrison's tool kit since his days fronting Them truly came to the fore at last. "Crazy Love," "Caravan," and "Brand New Day" could have been covered by any great soul singer, even as they redefined "soul" through the filter of Morrison's eclectic sensibilities. An openhearted record full of truly inspirational moments, MOONDANCE is Van at the absolute top of his game, setting the pace for everyone else to follow. Nearly every song here is a stone-cold classic, and MOONDANCE has become embedded in the collective pop consciousness as one of the most important touchstones of its time.Rolling Stone (12/11/03, p.113) - Ranked #65 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "...Songs such as the title track 'And It Stoned Me' and 'Caravan' felt like a lucid dream..." Rolling Stone (3/19/70, p.47) - "...MOONDANCE is an album of musical invention and lyrical confidence....this one will be immensely popular..." Vibe (12/99, p.160) - Included in Vibe's 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century Q (Magazine) (p.140) - "[A] single, flowing, perfectly programmed suite of songs, with 'Into The Mystic' its majestic centrepiece." NME (Magazine) (9/18/93, p.19) - Ranked #17 in NME's list of The Greatest Albums Of The '70s. Van Morrison Moondance Songs Moondance Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews IT WOULD TAKE A DECADE... for me to do a 'Van' review justice, but this is a great place to start.
I first took a chance on the LP in 1982 - when I was fully 22 years old, and I finally got around to SIDE 2 when I was about 24. While the first side tracks are much stronger, many other artists would love to have this side 2 as their strong side on their best album. It is that good.
But what you need to know is that there are close to a dozen worthy Van LPs worth buying up to 1985. I'll admit that after that he started to sound a bit too much like a fading, too often off-key wannabe lounge singer, relying on the string section. (Wow, that sounds bad.)
But not from 1968-85.
Combined on this LP are some of the most earthy-feel-good lyrics, best 70's instrumental combo (dig the delicate- to-powerful-horn combos), and seemingly impossible skat/jazz/rock/funk/folk/pop singing...incredibly, you'll eventually think that Moondance (the track) is the oddball here (indeed I believe he lifted the music from a relatively obscure jazz piece)...and go buy these others after...

and while I don't get into his singing much more, nevertheless, he's remained a great song writer Submitted by crysalis (Oro, Ontario,Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
And It Stoned Me Into The Mystic Moondance kicked off a period of amazing creativity for the master of Dublin soul. There are only two types of songs on this record: good songs and great songs. Submitted by Riff (St. Louis, MO, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
Incredible It's fascinating how an album that was recorded almost 15 years before I was born can affect me this way, Van Morrison's finest, no doubt about it. Submitted by Nir (Rishon Le-Zion, Israel) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.

Moondance
$9.09 Live Recording
Personnel includes: Van Morrison (vocals, acoustic guitar); Larry Fallon (arranger); Jay Berliner (guitar); John Payne (flute, soprano saxophone); Warren Smith, Jr. (vibraphone, percussion); Richard Davis (bass); Connie Kay (drums). Recorded in New York. Includes liner notes by Van Morrison. Astral Weeks is generally considered one of the best albums in pop music history. For all that renown, Astral Weeks is anything but an archetypal rock & roll album: in fact, it isn't a rock & roll album at all. Employing a mixture of folk, blues, jazz, and classical music, Van Morrison spins out a series of extended ruminations on his Belfast upbringing, including the remarkable character "Madame George" and the climactic epiphany experienced on "Cyprus Avenue." Accompanying himself ...

Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar, harmonica, tenor saxophone); John Platania (guitar, mandolin); Dahaud Elias Shaar (bass clarinet, drums, percussion, background vocals); Jack Schroer (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, piano); Keith Johnson (trumpet, organ); Alan Hand (piano, organ); John Klingberg (bass instrument); Janet Planet, Judy Clay (background vocals). Liner Note Author: Janet Planet. After the brilliant one-two punch of Astral Weeks and Moondance, His Band and the Street Choir brings Van Morrison back down to earth, both literally and figuratively. While neither as innovative nor as edgy as its predecessors, His Band and the Street Choir also lacks their overt mysticism; at heart, the album is simply Morrison's valentine to the R&B that inspired him, resulting in the muscular and joyous tribute "Domino" as ...
| | Van Morrison Into The Music CD (1979)
Moondance
$6.89 One of Morrison's best loved albums. It was universally praised by critics at the time of it's release, following on the renaissance trail blazed by "Wavelength". Lead off by the hit singles "Bright Side Of The Road" and "Full Force Gale", Morrison was reinvigorated and expanded his touring ensemble, with over 12 people on stage, including violinist Scarlet Rivera, who had come to prominence with her distinctive playing on Bob Dylan's "Desire" album.
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Herbie Armstrong (guitar, background vocals); Ry Cooder (slide guitar); Toni Marcus (mandolin violin, viola); Robin Williamson (pennywhistle); Pee Wee Ellis (saxophone); Mark Isham (trumpet, piccolo trumpet); Mark Jordan (keyboards); David Hayes (bass); Peter Van Hooke, Kurt Wortman ...

Moondance
$9.49 This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix label is controlled by Hendrix's family. The 1997 ...

Counting Crows: Matt Malley (vocals, piano, bass guitar); Adam Duritz (vocals); David Bryson, David Immerglück, Dani Vickery (guitar); Charlie Gillingham (keyboards); Millard Powers (bass guitar); Jim Bogios, Ben Mize (drums). Counting Crows always seemed a little older than their years, so it somehow seemed appropriate when they arrived at certain milestones a little earlier than their peers. They released their first live album, an exhaustive double-disc set, just two albums into their career, then, two albums later, they issued Films About Ghosts: The Best of..., their first compilation. Part of the reason they're issuing a compilation after just four studio albums may be that they've arrived at the end of the recording contract with Geffen and this ties up loose ends, but it's also been ten years since the band broke through with their debut August and Everything After and their first hit, "Mr. Jones," so it's a good time to take stock and recap their first decade. Films About Ghosts does offer an accurate summary of those ten years, even if it's not a complete one. While this generous 16-track compilation includes all of the major hits -- "Round Here," "A Long December," "Hanginaround," "Mr. Jones," and even the non-LP modern rock chart-topper "Einstein on the Beach (For an Eggman)" -- it does overlook three charting singles from their first two albums("A Murder of One," "Daylight Fading," "Have You Seen Me Lately"), substituting album tracks, and two new recordings produced by Brendan O'Brien (the good new single "She Don't Want Nobody Near," an enjoyable but superfluous cover of the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil") instead. Add to this a deliberately non-chronological sequencing that prevents the album from giving proper momentum, and Films About Ghosts isn't as ideal a compilation as it could ...
