Shortly after she departed the funk outfit Rufus in 1978, Chaka Khan recorded her solo debut, which demonstrated that the talent and energy she'd brought to Rufus could shine just as brightly without the rest of the band. On the strength of her popular, disco-fied take on Ashford and Simpson's "I'm Every Woman," CHAKA began to garner attention, a phenomenon hastened by the album's second single, "Life Is a Dance."

CHAKA is solid album throughout, though, thanks to an assembly of excellent backing musicians, top-notch production, and, naturally, Khan's amazingly capable pipes, which can veer from a fierce, fiery wail to a soulful croon with ease. Whether on ballads ("Roll Me Through the Rushes"), bottom-heavy boogie ("Some Love"), or her cover of Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made to Love Her" (Khan flips the gender), CHAKA blends funk and radio-ready R&B beautifully, and is a must for any fan of Rufus or Khan.

3 stars GREAT VOICE!!!!!!!!!!
Well what can i say!!!!! Great voice, but some of the songs were not the right material for her voice.I enjoy about three or four songs on this whole album. I'm every woman, life is a dance, roll me through the roses, and the duet with george benson!!!!!!!!

5 stars A true Diva and endless talent...
This album marks Chakas' first time outside of Rufus....and what a classic way to enter a solo career! Chakas' voice always demands your attention, but not quite as clearly as this fab effort. Highlights include "Some Love", "Love Has Fallen on Me", "Message in the Middle of the Bottom", and of course the anthem that arguably made her most famous, "Im Every Woman". There is a funkiness on this album that will remind you of the Rufus sound too. If you are starting a collection....START HERE!

4 stars Chaka at her best
This is some of Chaka Khan's best work. Spectacular vocals and funky arrangements. This is an essential part of any 70's R&B collection.

Chaka Khan Naughty CD  (1980)

Chaka album
CD $7.59  3.6 stars Audio Samples
By the early '80s Chaka Khan and producer Arif Mardin had a great working relationship that was responsible for her hit solo debut, 1979's Chaka. Despite having the hit single "I'm Every Woman," Chaka was often a stilted and unfocused affair. Naughty presents the two in a more centered working relationship. The big hit here, "Papillion (aka Hot Butterfly)," projects an effortlessness that didn't come as easy during Khan's concurrent run with Rufus. The tough, Latinized rock/funk of "Too Much Love" has one of Khan's most visceral performances. For Naughty Khan also does one of the better versions of Aaron Schroeder and Jerry Ragovoy's "Move Me No Mountain" that's made even better by Anthony Jackson's steady bass and Steve Ferrone's tough drumming. Despite the high points, other songs like "What You Did," "Our Love's in Danger," and even Ashford & Simpson's "Clouds" come off underdone. Recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York, most of Naughty represents Khan in a holding pattern, without much material to accommodate her widening range. That being said, Naughty is only a few songs away from being a bona fide classic. ~ Jason Elias Audio Mixer: Lewis Hahn. Liner Note Author: Kevin Tong. Recording information: Atlantic Studios, NY. Rufus was one of the most respected groups in the '70s and '80s. Although lead singer Chaka Khan's charismatic vocals were their drawing card, few outfits boasted the skill as Rufus as a band. Songs like "Please Pardon Me," "Sweet Thing," and "Fool's Paradise" are a few of the tracks that displayed the perfect marriage. This 1977 effort is the follow-up to 1975's Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan. Ask Rufus has the group doing more sophisticated and constantly challenging work with an accent on evocative ballads. The effort's lone dance track "At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up) has the band going for more subtlety. The jazzy "Close the Door" has a confident and gentle vocal from Khan and a beautiful string arrangement from Clare Fischer who offered them throughout this effort. The well-arranged "Earth Song" could be called botched poesy with lyrics like, "Stars what a mystical woman that you've made me," but Khan's charm keeps it from being an overstatement. The best track, the evocative and sensual "Everlasting Love" has great bass and guitar interplay from Bobby Watson and Tony Maiden, respectively, and an appealing earthy and ethereal vocal from Khan. The much loved "Hollywood" has just gotten stronger, with lines like, "Fixed expressions/Smiles worn thin" exhibiting a surprising and apropos world-weary view. The most ambitious song, the evocative "Egyptian Song," has Middle Eastern motifs and a compelling vocal from Khan that pulls it all ...

In the days before Chaka Khan achieved solo status as an R&B superstar, she was part of the funk collective Rufus. Even on this 1974 album, her distinctive vocal personality was so strong she merited a "featuring Chaka Khan" cover credit. But RAGS TO RUFUS is unquestionably a group effort. Al Ciner's chicken-scratch guitar, Kevin Murphy's burning clavinet, and Ron Stockert's colorful keyboards provide just the right funky framework for Khan's soulful ministrations. Hard-hitting, incisive funk dominates the album, but Khan nevertheless pauses for a successful mid-tempo Aretha simulation on "Walkin' in the Sun." On the title tune, the group displays its instrumental prowess, showcasing its facility for sophisticated horn arrangements, which complement virtuosic guitar and synthesizer work. The album's centerpiece is the Stevie Wonder-penned "Tell Me Something Good," a slow-burning, wah-wah clavinet-fueled song seasoned with sensuality and sarcasm in equal amounts. While Rufus proves capable of laying down hardcore funk grooves, it's the band's highly developed harmonic sensibility that sets them apart from their contemporaries. Originally released on ABC Records in 1974. Recorded at Quantam Studios, Torrance, California. Personnel: ...

RUFUS FEATURING CHAKA KHAN is another in the band's string of slinky, R&B-charged albums. Guitarist Tony Maiden, keyboardist Kevin Murphy, drummer Andre Fischer, and bassist Bobby Watson weave a web of jazzy melodies and airtight, syncopated rhythms from start to finish. But the group's real weapon, as the title indicates, is in the powerhouse pipes of Chaka Khan, one of R&B's indisputably great talents. Khan's elastic vocals are simultaneously sultry, sly, and gently lilting, and stun equally on melody-centered R&B numbers ("Fool's Pardise") and no-nonsense funk workouts ("Have a Good Time"). Though the lean sound of the group's standard instrumental quartet is plenty powerful, there is the welcome addition here of horns by the Tower of Power and tasteful string charts from noted arranger Claire Fischer. The results can be earthy, as on the stripped-down punch of "Dance Wit Me," or sophisticated, as on the heady, down-tempo soul of "Everybody Has an Aura." Even the band's decelerated cover of "Jive Talkin'" holds an appeal with its rootsy, old-school groove (delivering a punch lacking in the Bee Gees' disco original). One of Rufus's definitive recordings, FEATURING CHAKA ...

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine." Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the ...

Rick Margitza's first CD for the Palmetto label is a by-the-book post-bop affair. One gets the sense that the young tenor and soprano saxophonist is not taking a lot of chances. The quartet lineup couldn't be hotter, however: Joining Margitza are Joey Calderazzo on piano, Scott Colley on bass, and Ian Froman on drums. Five of the ten tracks are Margitza originals; the cover material includes such interesting choices as Randy Newman's "Dexter's Tune" (played as a piano/tenor duet), Don Grolnick's "The Four Sleepers" (based on "Autumn Leaves"' changes), and Chick Corea's "You're Everything," along with standards such as "You Must Believe in Spring" and Cy Coleman's "With Every Breath I Take." Margitza's tunes are respectable but not especially bold or memorable. "Provence" and "14 Bar Blues" move along with medium Latin tempos; ...

This album features ex-Propaganda members Claudia Brucken and Thomas Leer. Act was a short-lived collaboration between synthmeister Thomas Leer and German pop diva Claudia Brucken. The pair followed up their modest four-track 1987 record Snobbery and Decay with the somewhat pretentious, half-baked concept album Laughter, Tears and Rage. At their best, Act comes close to approximating the dark-edged techno-pop sound of the Eurythmics, as on the opening "Absolutely Immune" and the blustery "Gestures." Better yet, the record's final track, "Theme from Snobbery and Decay" (taken from the band's first album), with its cutting commentary on Robin Leachery and its sweeping string arrangement by David Bedford, bears echoes of those kings of synth satire, the Pet Shop Boys. But most of the album chokes on its own goth-pop ambitions, allowing Brucken free rein to milk every available ounce of angst out of her strident vocal solos while Leer loses himself in a murky electronic purgatory of his own design. But if a small handful of mildly tuneful techno-pop is enough to hold your interest, make sure you find the American edition of Laughter, Tears and Rage, which contains a cover of the Smiths' "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" that is missing ...

Don Tjernagel Tjernagel,Don Vol. 2-Prick CD  (2007)

Chaka CD music
CD $8.69
Don Tjernagel rules. Prick 2 is this stand-up comic's fifth independent release comedy CD and it definitely kicks ass comedy. Still, this CD is not for the faint of heart, the politically correct, the easily or not so easily offended. I consider myself a veteran stand-up comedy fan, rarely encounter comedians I find offensive and when I do find one who, in my opinion, goes beyond good taste it is more because the comic is not strong enough to deliver the edgy material than because of the material itself. Don Tjernagel has the chops and the talent (and then some) to do whatever he wants and make jokes about whatever he wants but Prick 2 definitely made me squirm. It also definitely made me laugh so what the hell. The particularly controversial tracks are White Women and "N" about the N word. Hollywood is more stand-up comedy about race relations and a former Tjernagel girlfriend who blamed Mexicans. This comic has always been a personal fave not only because he pushes the envelope but also because this is very intelligent comedy and Prick 2 is up to Tjernagel's usual high standards. His greatest talent is the segue and Hollywood is proof of that.Baby boomers definitely get attacked on this solid (aside from the sound quality, and more on that later) stand-up comedy CD and on 60's, the third track. Fair warning for the women folk out there: it is not a good idea to be this comic's girlfriend as you automatically become fodder for his stand-up act. I am starting to suspect that he probably chooses his mates for their comedic potential but I could be wrong. The titles on Prick 2 are a bit misleading. Allah and Jesus starts off with a bit about sniffing panties, butt sex, before going into another nastily funny bit about religious icons before moving on to more controversial material about ordinary people. The last track on Prick 2 contains the joke that has the greatest chance to offend listeners (it has to do with Jews and ovens) but it is, as a vast majority of the ...

(Click on a track to listen while you're reading: Track 3 is soulful, track 6 is a toe-tapper, track eight will make you laugh, and track 13 is wacky.) Al “Doc” Mehl presents his second album of original western music. With Doc singing and performing on guitar and cello, virtuoso Washtub Jerry on the washtub bass, and newcomer Eric Christiansen on the harmonica, this unique collection of songs isn’t quite like anything you’ve ever heard around the campfire!THE LADIES' MAN. If you’re busy cowboyin’ out in the old west, you’re not going to get many opportunities to make a good impression on a member of the fairer sex. So take good care when first you speak, or she’ll be long gone. PANIOLO. One of the largest and oldest ranches in the United States is on the big island of Hawaii. When winter weather descends on the U.S. mainland, one might imagine a lifetime spent working cattle on a tropical island, and living the life of the Paniolo, the Hawaiian cowboy.I'D RATHER BE... One Saturday morning, I woke up achy from the top of my head to the tips of my toes. No cough, no fever, no upset stomach, just achy all over. When I found I was no better on Sunday, I turned to my wife and lamented, “Hon, I sure hope I’m sick. Because if I’m not sick... I just got old.”SWEET BARBARA WIRE. Did you ever hunker down by an old barbed wire fence, and hear the wires singing in the breeze? Add a few creature noises, a bird overhead, and a coyote off in the distance, and you’ve got yourself a regular cowboy choir.WET DOG. Leave it to the golden retriever to always find a puddle for splashing when we’re out and about. After piling back into the vehicle, the smell of that dog’s wet fur struck me as one of those memorable sensations that can’t be mistaken for anything else. BRAND NEW LEATHER. A few years back, I was asked to play for a group of leather workers and saddle makers. They seemed to be hoping for a song about the feel and the smell of “brand new leather.” I guess I couldn’t fathom their using the word “brand” as an adjective rather than as a verb.CAN'T DO WITHOUT... If you have to grow old, you couldn’t do better than to have Kath and Jim taking care of you. She was Kath’s mother, but we all just called her “Mama.” As she continued to lose her faculties over time, I couldn’t help inventing a few of my own stories about her now forgotten past. TWENTY POUNDS OVER. I’ll admit to carrying a bit too much weight. Seems I was holding my own, though, rock steady at about twenty pounds overweight. Then, ever so gradually, my weight started creeping up again, until one day I was shocked to weigh in at twenty pounds over my previous twenty-pound excess. This can’t be good.LEAVIN' MONTAN'. Imagine being an early explorer in the rugged Rocky Mountains, and stumbling across a magical valley of azure waters, boiling mud, and echoing eruptions of jets of white steam. This song is set in a time when Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho were all U.S. territories rather than states, and the mystical corner where they meet was not yet a national park.STARTIN' TODAY. With each passing year, there aren’t as many cowboys left playing the traditional tunes and sharing the old stories. Here’s a song in remembrance of one of the old guard.WOULD I WERE A COWBOY. Years ago, my sweet bride Annie introduced me to her long-time friend, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. He dropped in, and stayed in his run down motor home parked outside our house long enough to get the neighbors whispering about us. Then he was off to new adventures. I guess there’s just a little bit of Jack in my song and in my spirit.LOVE IS LIKE... I told Annie that I had finally composed the love song she keeps encouraging me to write. She listened to it once, and then said, “Keep trying.”HAPPY TRAIL MIX. If you’re going to sing ...
