While not their best-selling or most renowned album, ZZ Top's 1970 debut, ZZ TOP'S FIRST ALBUM, showed that the Texas trio had already nearly perfected their signature down n' dirty, blues-boogie-rock style. Like ZZ Top's other classic '70s albums, this one's an ass-kicker from beginning to end, especially on such standouts as the album-opening twang of "Shaking Your Tree," the vicious "Brown Sugar," the big rock of "Goin' Down to Mexico," and the fat blues groover "Bedroom Thang." Also of note is guitarist Billy Gibbons' supreme guitar tone and tasty playing; few other rock guitarists have sounded as confident on their debut as Gibbons does on ZZ TOP'S FIRST ALBUM.
ZZ Top was formed by guitarist Billy Gibbons, who had won praise from no less than Jimi Hendrix for his guitar work with the Houston band, Moving Sidewalks. After the break-up of Moving Sidewalks, he recruited fellow Texans Dusty Hill and Frank Beard. Inspired by Muddy Waters, the Rolling Stones and Texas blues legend John Lee Hooker, they played a solid brand of blues-rock that won them a devoted local following.
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank "Rube" Beard (drums).

Billy Rippin' It Up Just an amazing album. Hendrix didn't call "The Reverend" the best guitarist he had heard for nothing. Classic Billy Gibbons Les Paul tone. If ya havent heard ZZ Tops "roots" you are missing way out. My favorite album from ZZ. One of my personal favorite albums of all time. Submitted by John (California) Was This Review Helpful? You can't add much to the 1st 5 reviews.... But the 1st is still the best, in my humble opinion. Was stationed on Treasure Island in the Marine corps in 71. The Padre was from Texas and made sure 4 or 5 of us went along with him to Winterland in San Francisco to see his favorite band. It was like an old gymnasium with small bleachers on each side of the floor and a balcony. You could sit or stand anywhere and we ended up about 20 feet back from the center of the stage with ZZ rocking away. Three young guys with short hair and no beards. They looked like some college kids. my 1st concert, ZZ, Wild Turkey and the headliner was Ten Years After. What a night....jim barron Submitted by bgdoors (Edmonds, Wa. USA) Was This Review Helpful? I just clicked on "have you heard this album?" .. to write a review..
Because I must have heard it a thousand times or more! I first bought it back in 1980 at age 15, and I'm not tired of it yet. It's simply the best ZZ Top album, and one of my all time favourites. Submitted by Blues/Rock fan (Copenhagen, Denmark) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
In my opinion, its their best one!!!!! I was 11 years old and I discovered ZZ Top in a video show. It was "Gimme all your lovin" and I was floored by the music and dug the video. I was an instant fan. Then a year or two later I saw the ZZ Top's first album on cassette and took it home and It kicked my ass!!! The songs! the way it was produced! Frank's drums never sounded that good again! Billy and Dusty display their musicianship brilliantly! I wish Billy didnt remix the songs. They sounded great the way they were! ZZ Top's First Album CD music
$13.15 On Specula's debut full-length album, Erupt, the band approaches their classic garage rock from a different angle: there's no bassist or drummer. It's not really a "band." Instead it's a duo, who go by aliases and play instruments of their own creation (such as the biofeedbacker, magic horn, & procto guitar). They completely forego any bass on the album, but employ drum loops from none other than Blackie O. (Urge Overkill) and Mike Zelenko (ex-Material Issue) for their compositions. This all may sound strange, but the music ends up sounding a lot like early-'70s proto-punk (Stooges, T. Rex, New York Dolls) with vocals similar to John Kay of Steppenwolf. The group supplies lots of intimidating attitude for songs like "Hello Pain," "Forever Loving You," and "Stand By," strutting along fiercely. But the duo is not limited to glitter rock sounds -- the album's instrumental closing track, the moody, buzzing "Dual," puts to good use their freakish original instruments. Due to the album's short duration (barely over 30 minutes long), Specula hits you with their homemade rock and runs. ~ Greg Prato

ZZ Top's First Album album
$32.59 NOTHING BUT A DREAM by Australian rocker Paul Kelly includes the songs "If I Could Start Today Again," "Pretty Place," and "I Wasted Time."
The Australian reissue comes with a bonus disc entitled THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING, featuring more Kelly originals.
This longtime Australian singer/songwriter has often been hailed as his continent's equivalent to Bruce Springsteen in his relevance and consistency. And while some of the songs reek of too much polish and production effects, such as "Midnight Rain," the subsequent "I Close My Eyes and Think of You" more than adequately compensates for such mistakes. On this album, the songs speak of a certain longing and asking for redemption, but are dominantly roots pop arrangements. "Change Your Mind" resembles Mark Knopfler's subtlety over a sparse, ambient background. ...
