ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar, fiddle, harmonica); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). TEJAS was accompanied by the year-long "World Texas Tour," a huge multi-media show that included live cattle on stage with the band. The widely reported tour broke ticket sale and attendance records. Drained by the tour, and unhappy with the support of their record label (London), they took a three-year break. They negotiated a switch to Warner Brothers, who put out their next album (DEGUELLO), and also bought their back catalog for re-issue. Also available as part of the ZZ Top 6 pack. ZZ Top was riding high in the mid-'70s on the strength of Tres Hombres and Fandango, but they were starting to run out of steam by 1977's Tejas. Its predecessor was padded with a live side, but even if it was close to padding, it was still enjoyable. Tejas, despite sounding pretty good, is just forgettable. It has the patented, propulsive ZZ boogie, but none of the songs are particularly memorable, even if the whole thing sounds pretty good as it's playing. ZZ Top and their label, London, must have noticed this too, since even though the album went gold, they followed it months later with The Best of ZZ Top, which contained none of the songs from this album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine On Tejas, ZZ Top countrified the bluesy posture of their previous albums, resulting in a slight detour between the madcap spirit of Fandango and the psychedelic strut of Deguello. While the album lacks any singles as strong as "Tush" or "La Grange," "Arrested for Driving While Blind" is one of ZZ's classic anthems, capturing the group's wacky humor and jaunty good-time boogie. Other highlights include the driving "Enjoy and Get It On," "Avalon Hideaway," and the fine instrumental "Asleep in the Desert." However, like all of their early albums, the CD transfer is spoiled by overdubbing and other lame attempts to update (and, in some cases, extend) the original songs, and it much better on vinyl. ~ Jim Smith After breaking through to the big time with its hit 1975 release FANDANGO! (and its Top 40 single "Tush"), ZZ Top returned to the studio and issued its fifth album, TEJAS, one year later. The album kept ZZ near the top of the charts, as it embarked on its massive "Worldwide Texas Tour" soon after the album's release (which included live animals as part of the stage's props!). Musically, the album is somewhat more laid back than the band's previous more uptempo releases, as proven by such blues rockers as "It's Only Love," "Arrested for Driving While Blind," "El Diablo," and "Snappy Kakkie." The band would take an extended break from the recording studio after TEJAS, not resurfacing again until 1979's DEGUELLO. A little different for the 70's This is a very fine album. I remember when it came out in 76. I t was different, but I still liked it.
When is it going to be rereleased and remasterd with bonus tracks like Tres Hombres and Fandango?(my favorites by ZZ) Submitted by Darryl (Fulton, MO & Pensacola, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Unique This is a different album for ZZ Top as it was to be their first and only detour from pure blues/rock during the 1970s. There's still some good rockin' numbers on "Tejas" but there's a distinct lack of blues. HOWEVER, the album's overall feel is still fantastic. "It's only love" is a funky rockin' number that sticks in your mind. "El diablo" has a unique shuffling sound together with a haunting fade out that's a pleasure to hear. "Mister ten dollar man" is hard rock - and it goes off! And then there's "Asleep in the desert" which showcases a sensitive side to their music which has never been recorded before; it's a tender instrumental with Gibbons on acoustic guitar - and it's my favourite track on the album. "Tejas" is unconventional ZZ Top, but it's still a classic album that fits well in their collection and shines out as a successful 'experiment' in their highly acclaimed musical career. $6.09 ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank "Rube" Beard (drums). ZZ Top's First Album may not be perfectly polished, but it does establish their sound, attitude, and quirks. Simply put, it's a dirty little blues-rock record, filled with fuzzy guitars, barrelhouse rhythms, dirty jokes, and Texan slang. They have a good, ballsy sound that hits at gut level, and if the record's not entirely satisfying, it's because they're still learning how to craft records -- which means that they're still learning pacing as much as they're learning how to assemble a set of indelible material. Too much of this record glides by on its sound, ...

Tejas
$7.29 ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). Also available as part of the ZZ Top 6 Pack. All tracks have been digitally remastered. With their second album, Rio Grande Mud, ZZ Top uses the sound they sketched out on their debut as a blueprint, yet they tweak it in slight but important ways. The first difference is the heavier, more powerful sound, turning the boogie guitars into a locomotive force. There are slight production flares that date this as a 1972 record, but for the most part, this is a straight-ahead, dirty blues-rock ...

$15.19 THE MERCURY SEEDTHROWING ROCKS AT THE SUN"8 out of 10! Their rootsy rock is built for stadia, and if there were any justice in the world, the stupidly melodic 'This Time' - with its loose E-Street groove and killer chorus - would be a radio hit of massive proportions. Seriously, they're that good."-Classic Rock magazine issue 118 (UK)"4 1/2 Stars! Emotion is the crux of this set, the stunning music a backdrop to Volker's husky, thick-with-feeling vocals and his constantly evocative lyrics. Many jump out to grab listeners by the ear, but all ring absolutely true. Amazingly, the band produced this set themselves, and the sound is magnificent, beautifully heightening the atmospheres while capturing every instrument and note sung to its best advantage. Superb!"- All Music Guide (allmusic.com)"4 1/2 Stars! Throwing Rocks At The Sun knocked us on our asses. The band's melodic guitar-fueled rock mixes toughness with sincerity. Every one of the tracks on the Mercury Seed's album, which this quintet divides into "side one" and "side two", captures a young band at full throttle. Some of the best guitar solos you'll ...
