Strangely enough, Tiger in the Rain would have been a smoother transition from Sleeping Gypsy, just as Burchfield Nines would have been a more natural follow-up to The Art of Tea. For the first time, Michael Franks made an album completely without the production team of Tommy LiPuma, Al Schmitt and Lee Hershberg, employing instead John Simon (the Band, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen). The recording boasts a large number of celebrated horn and string players, as well as jazz luminaries Ron Carter, Bucky Pizzarelli, Kenny Barron, Mike Mainieri and Flora Purim. Lush, romantic and more experimental than previous efforts, Tiger in the Rain has a seriousness of purpose that faithfully echoes that of Sleeping Gypsy, with less of a Brazilian feel and overall a more somber tone of lost love. While none of its songs has the instant appeal of some of his earlier writing, the album as a whole is as refreshing and meditative as a stroll through a rain forest. ~ Steve Matteo

Michael Franks Tiger In The Rain Songs Tiger In The Rain Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) Wonderful!!! CD Universe MUST change the star drop down box system...too many of us who are not accustomed to the process are inadvertently being stuck with the automatic "3" STAR grading while filing our comments.
Whatever...'Tiger in The Rain' is just one more thoroughly enjoyable album by this great humanitarian...thanks Michael Submitted by faust8577 (Lorraine, Que. Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The best ever to be made I first heard Michael Franks when I was 15 years old. I got hooked and that was it. I remember at that time my father was playing Butterfly summer. Now that I am 32 years, I can tell you I am a proud own of all his albums. His music is a music that I believe will last for generations. More especially "Tiger in the Rain." a mellow and beautiful life I have been listening to this music for 25 years - I seduced and wooed my wonderful best friend and the mother of my four beautiful children to the music of Tiger in the Rain and The Art of Tea - both of us entranced and transported by the sensual voice and songs of this most remarkable lyracist.
Now my first born - my 22 year old son - has hijacked OUR music and claims Michael Franks for he and his friends as their own. How well have I prepared him!! It is wonderful and moving to observe another generation mellow and relaxed at 2am in the morning around a cosy fire, sipping port and wine and being taken away - again - just as we were way back then -also seduced by the languid intoxication of the voice and lyrics - and then dreamily rolling out in the late morning and taking a drive in the Benz "up to our hide away" (Whale Breach) to the sun and to surf and to lie around on the sand and to listen to more and more and more - leaving my lover (his mother - my wife) and me to again melt together in the mellow tones of familar and much loved sounds, words and musical aromas and moods on beautiful Sunday mornings...keeping to us what has become part of our distilled essence.
Thank your Michael - God bless your and yours always.
