(3 Customer Reviews)
Formed in Athens, Georgia, the B-52's emerged from this nominal outback with 'Rock Lobster', a quirky pop song that drew critical praise and engendered a major recording contract. The B-52's maintained the originality of that debut single, with staccato voices, vox guitar and surreal lyrics. Drawing on 60s kitsch ephemera, both aurally and visually, the quintet created a unified image, but one reflecting post-modernism rather than nostalgia. A cracked sense of humour lay at the core of this album, but the group's infectious joy and sense of purpose blend with danceable rhythms to ensure a quality more enduring than mere wackiness.
Also available with WILD PLANET on 1 cassette.
Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas.
The B-52s: Kate Pierson (vocals, guitar, organ, keyboard bass); Cindy Wilson (vocals, guitar, percussion); Fred Schneider (vocals, keyboards, walkie talkie); Ricky Wilson (guitar, smoke alarm); Keith Strickland (drums, percussion, Claire sounds).Rolling Stone (12/11/03, p.131) - Ranked #152 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "They played toy instruments, and their thrift-store image was as inventive and colorful as their music..." Spin (p.104) - "At new wave's crest, nothing sounded as fresh and liberating as the B's." Spin (p.140) - "They've got repurposed surf guitar licks, cheesy organ vamps, [and] Pop-Tart girl-group harmonies..." B-52S Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) 52 is the Bomb What a 1st issue, in the top 100! They changed the "new wave" or should I say were the new wave. Buy this and you will either be rolling and pogo-ing and twisting or just get high and have fun. My favs are 52 girls and 606-0842. Saw them live at the now burn down Emerald City, NJ with the Ramones.....what a show and have the autographs and a prized "roach" framed and enjoyed by all. RIP Ricky. Buy this, it is new wave-craze at it's best. Athen's best until REM Submitted by Dave...Ballsofun1 (Allentown, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
B52 strike! Just when it seemed that the new wave musical explosion that hit the UK in the late 1970's had subsided and we were all going to be assimilated into the new romantic collective, a wild new outfit from Athens, Georgia, USA, changed the world forever.
The unsuspecting public first heard about the band after the release of the first single "Rock Lobster"...then came the debut LP. What a gem! The wild, wacky B52 sound heard on this LP was only surpassed on the "Cosmic thing" recording which appeared some 10 years later.
Esential tracks include the aforementioned "Rock Lobbers", "Planet
Claire", "Dance this mess around" and "52 girls"...the only weaker track is a cover version of Petula Clark's "Downtown" which still does it for me!

B-52's Stellar Debut Album This album seemingly dropped out of the sky in 1979 ushering in an era of bold, new, experimental and, yes, FUN music. "Rock Lobster" was an easy pick for nightclub DJ's upon its release, but no song better exemplifies the B-52's frantic hilarity and deep poignance in song writing as "Dance This Mess Around". "52 Girls" was another dance floor staple and the garage-rock remake of Petula Clark's "Downtown" has survived the test of time. A must for any serious music collector - paricularly those collecting punk and new wave. Submitted by a reviewer (New York, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

B-52S
$8.95 If you have any doubt that WILD PLANET was intended as the ultimate in new-wave party albums, just turn your attention to the opening "Party Out of Bounds." The song sums up everything that's great about the B-52s, the kitschy, minimalist dance band that somehow managed to overcome its primitive musicianship and crank out a big pile of hit records. On one level, the track is an exuberant invitation to cut loose; on another, it's a slightly veiled homage to S&M, set to an irresistible beat and edgy guitar track.
WILD PLANET's next eight tracks continue along the same lines. The B-52s keep the dance beats coming while amusing any party people who take care to pay attention to the group's witty, oddball lyrics. "Runnin' Around," "Private Idaho," and "Strobe Light" are the other standout tracks here, but nearly every song has something to ...
| | B-52's Whammy! CD (1983)
B-52S
$8.39 Opening with "Legal Tender," a paean to counterfeiting, WHAMMY is the B-52s' return to form after the previous year's David Byrne-led detour into more experimental territory (MESOPOTAMIA). Comprising a richer and fuller sound without compromising on the band's economy of sound, WHAMMY is an enjoyable work.
Highlights include the aural personal ad "Song for a Future Generation," the rockin' legume tune "Butterbean," and the sci-fi "Moon 83" (replacing Yoko Ono's "Don't Worry" on this reissue). The album veers into the ridiculous-even ...
| | B-52's Bouncing Off The Satellites CD (1986)
B-52S
$9.29 "Dedicated To The Memory Of Ricky Wilson." (Wilson died of AIDS in 1985.)
BOUNCING OFF THE SATELLITES, released following the untimely death of guitarist Ricky Wilson, has a far weightier atmosphere than the B-52s' other releases. While Wilson featured heavily in the recording of SATELLITES, it is obvious that things were not so bouncy in the band during this period.
Songs such as "Summer of Love," "Detour Through Your Mind," and "Girl from Impanema" feature a curious combination of B-52s- styled vocals with a '70s disco beat. This is most evident on "Housework," ...
| | B-52's Cosmic Thing CD (1989)
B-52S
$6.95 1986's BOUNCING OFF THE SATELLITES found the B-52s in the throes of mourning (they'd lost guitarist Ricky Wilson). But they returned in 1989 with COSMIC THING, a corker that set up the band for '90s success. This is a glorious party of a collection and an album that should stand up to time and scrutiny. The B-52s benefit from the production of Nile Rodgers and Don Was. Numerous guest musicians, including ubiquitous bassist Sara Lee, only add to the fullness of this release.
The southern swank of "Dry Country" marks the first B-52s song to pay homage to the band's Georgia roots. Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson feature heavily on the comely slacker anthem "Deadbeat Club". COSMIC THING's big hit, the fantastic "Love Shack," compels listeners to perform embarrassing and involuntary dance moves. But the album's true highlight is "Roam," a Wilson showcase with a lovely a cappella choir intro, a driving beat, and infectious ...

$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. B-52S
$14.25 All songs written or co-written by Fenton Robinson except "Can't Hold Out Much Longer" (Jacobs), "The Feeling Is Gone" (Malone), and "Sinner's Prayer" (Fulson/Glenn).
For the most part, another easy-going trip to the mellower side of contemporary blues, Robinson's jazzy tone and buttery vocals applied to a couple of his '50s-era numbers ("Crazy Crazy Lovin'" and "Schoolboy") along with some intriguing new iteams and Lowell Fulson's mournful "Sinner's Prayer." Tasty backing helps too. ~ Bill Dahl

| | Pat Green Wave On Wave CD (2003)
B-52S
$12.05 Curtis Wright, Waylon Payne, Ray Benson, Trish Murphy (background vocals).
"Wave On Wave" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Country Song.
Pat Green is enough of a star in his home state of Texas that WAVE ON WAVE features an appearance by that preeminent local member of country music royalty, Willie Nelson. But Green's still enough in touch with his roots to also employ the earthier talents of Ray Wylie Hubbard, the writer of one of the original outlaw songs, "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother."
This combination of professionalism and a certain raw edge serves Green well on an album that lifts him out the crowd of run-of-the-mill singer-songwriters and closer to national stardom. He keeps enough of a homegrown feel here on songs such as "Guy Like Me" and "Wrapped" to stay true to his roots, while the hooky title track should gain him plenty of new fans. That the aforementioned Nelson duet (also featuring Ray Benson, Waylon Payne, and Trish Murphy) occurs on "Elvis," a laid-back slice of Presleyana that's almost Ray Stevens-like in its goofiness, is a tribute both to Green's lack of pretension and to his confidence that good songwriting will win out over showbiz glitz every time.
David Neuhauser (acoustic & electric guitars, piano, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Jondan McBride (acoustic guitar, 12-string guitar, mandolin, background vocals); Ray Wylie Hubbard (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Brett Danaher (electric guitar, baritone guitar, banjo); Brent Rowan, John Carroll (electric guitar); Mike Daly (steel guitar, dobro); Sasha Ostrovsky (steel guitar); Brendan Anthony (violin); John Jarvis (piano); Michael Tarabay (bass); Justin Pollard (drums, percussion); Chad Cromwell (drums);

| | Introducing Hello Saferide CD (2005)
B-52S
$22.25 Hello Saferide, also known as Annika Norlin, continues her romance with innocent, infectious indie pop on her 2005 Razzia release, Introducing.... Listeners who enjoyed the quirky pop hooks and all-around warm fuzziness of her previous work will find much of the same stuff on this release, which also boasts a fuller, more produced sound. Admittedly, one could argue that this is nothing more than more of the same cute-as-a-button indie pop that's already pumped out by the likes of Rilo Kiley or Camera Obscura. After all, all the twee trademarks are here: the tiny bells; the jaunty handclaps; the sudden arrival of the ...
