For 1981's EL LOCO ZZ Top's first album of the '80s, the trio decided to streamline its gritty blues rock sound somewhat and focus on hooks. While it would take this approach a step further on its next release, the monster crossover hit ELIMINATOR, EL LOCO was ZZ Top's last album before entering its synth-heavy phase.
Its Texas blues trademark sound can still be detected beneath the studio enhanced sheen. The best known track remains the X-rated uptempo ditty "Pearl Necklace," as well as the rolling "Tube Snake Boogie," and the surprisingly new wave sounds of "Groovy Little Hippie Pad."
Also available with DEGUELLO on 1 cassette, and as part of the ZZ Top 6 pack.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

El Loco Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Down& dirty!! The last great ZZ TOP album is excellent before their change-over to pop music & MTV videos. El Loco does display what would be explored further on Eliminator but also contains the Texas sound the early fans had come to know and love.
El Loco makes a satisfying book-end to ZZ TOP's FIRST ALBUM and is quite fun to listen to. Highly recommended!!

Hard to classify "El loco" is an album I've always had mixed feelings about, and this I think is a reflection of how the band actually were at the time. After the great blues/rock masterpiece of "Deguello" in 1979, ZZ Top produce "El loco" in 1981, and you can hear that they're trying to take their sound into a new direction, but they still want to hold on to their blues/rock/boogie roots. "El loco" is a strange album - at times it boogies well ("Tube Snake Boogie" and "Party on the patio" are good examples of this) and at times it rocks (check out "I wanna drive you home" and "Don't Tease me" - they're excellent rockers). But then it has tracks like "Leila" and "It's hard" which really are AM radio friendly pop songs; and this is a sign of things to come...fast forward to 1985 and ZZ Top's "Afterburner", the album where ZZ Top abandon their blues/rock/boogie completely and move to pop and dance. "El loco" uncomfortably sits on the verge between these 2 points, unable to make up its mind as to whether it continues the 1970s raw ZZ Top style or becomes commercial 1980s pop. Superb Album This is a superb album if you're a ZZ Top fan like me. Tube Snake Boogie and Pearl Necklace are the well known and great songs but I love the song Party on the Patio. Leila is a nice, rhythmic ballad and Heaven, Hell or Houston is groovy. Submitted by Esther (Vancouver, B. C., Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Nice I find this album is an underrated album that has songs like "I wanna drive you home" my fave ZZ TOP song "Leila" "Tube snake boogie" "It's so hard" etc. that sound like songs from teh 50's. It's sought of a 50''s/60's tribute. Pearl Neckalce and Groooovy soudn like late 60's music tho. Submitted by Tnahpellee (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Last Great ZZ Top Album EL LOCO is the last great ZZ Top album before the band dove full-throttle into synthesizers and lost their soul. This album is a must-own. Submitted by Adam (Suffern NY USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$6.09 While not their best-selling or most renowned album, ZZ Top's 1970 debut, ZZ TOP'S FIRST ALBUM, showed that the Texas trio had already nearly perfected their signature down n' dirty, blues-boogie-rock style. Like ZZ Top's other classic '70s albums, this one's an ass-kicker from beginning to end, especially on such standouts as the album-opening twang of "Shaking Your Tree," the vicious "Brown Sugar," the big rock of "Goin' Down to Mexico," and the fat blues ...

$5.99 Drained by the tour, and unhappy with the support of their record label (London), they took a three-year break. They negotiated a switch to Warner Brothers, who put out their next album (DEGUELLO), and also bought their back catalog for re-issue.
After breaking through to the big time with its hit 1975 release FANDANGO! (and its Top 40 single "Tush"), ZZ Top returned to the studio and issued its fifth album, TEJAS, one year later. The album kept ZZ near the top of the charts, as it embarked on its massive "Worldwide Texas Tour" soon after the album's release (which included live animals ...

| | ZZ Top Tres Hombres CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
El Loco
$5.99 On 1973's TRES HOMBRES, everything came together for ZZ Top. While it was near inconceivable that the trio could better its superb previous effort, 1972's RIO GRANDE MUD, here ZZ Top somehow found a way to make the riffs tastier and the blues boogie more lethal.
One of classic rock's most identifiable standards, "La Grange," resides here, borrowing liberally from John Lee Hooker. But there's even more great blues-rock to feast on--the moderately paced "Waitin' for the Bus," the 12-bar blues of "Jesus Just Left Chicago," and the party-hearty anthem "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers" (a tune Van Halen has covered live from time to time). Elsewhere, the thick rocker "Precious and Grace" easily gives Led Zeppelin a run for its money.
Tres Hombres is the record that brought ZZ Top their first Top Ten record, making them stars in the process. It couldn't have happened to a better record. ZZ Top finally got their low-down, cheerfully sleazy blooze-n-boogie right on this, their third album. As their sound gelled, producer Bill Ham discovered how to record the trio so simply that they sound indestructible, and the group brought the best set of songs they'd ever have to the table. On the surface, there's nothing really special about the record, since it's just a driving blues-rock album from a Texas bar band, but ...
| | ZZ Top Fandango CD (1975) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
El Loco
$6.19 FANDANGO, ZZ Top's fourth album, came out after five years of constant touring. With a studio/live format, it contained their first top-40 single ("Tush").
Also available with TRES HOMBRES on 1 cassette and as part of the ZZ Top 6 Pack.
While ZZ Top's early '70s studio albums were indeed great examples of the blues rock genre, the band's live shows were where the band really shined. On 1975's FANDANGO!, the trio issued an album that contained an 'in-concert' first side and a 'studio' second.
This was the album that catapulted ZZ Top to the summit of the '70s rock mountain, mainly due to the rowdy monster hit "Tush," which remains in rotation on rock radio to this day. Other highlights include the ...

El Loco
$16.45 TroikaOver a year ago, Ryan Hunt, Jennifer Jenkins and I started working on this massive project. In the recording studio (Frequency Studio) that Jen and I built together, we started collecting ideas for a recording that would express all of our eclectic styles and individual talents. We spent months experimenting with new sounds and new ways of presenting the material that we chose. Although there were many times when we wanted to tear our hair out when ideas that we wanted desperately to work crashed and burned, the majority of the experience was amazingly creative and productive. I can't imagine undertaking this project without the two of them. Our hours and hours of time together formed a musical and personal bond that cannot be broken. We often commented about how our best ideas seemed to pour out in our studio, and how astonishing it was that things seemed to work out for the good of this project. It seemed as though it was really supposed to happen, and now, it has. All of the tracks on this album were arranged by all three of us. Some were created by one more than the other, but the final product always included all three. And, five of the tracks are written by Ryan. His amazing sense of lyrics and musical personality drew me immediately to his talent the first time I met him. With his original music and arranging skills, and Jen's incomparable ear, musical genius and original ideas, we came up with a diverse sound that we hope you will enjoy. The album is beautifully packaged in three panel "digipack" with gorgeous original artwork by Veijo Vilva specifically designed for this CD. He's an amazing artist living in Finland with a spectacular online gallery. We hope you enjoy this recording, and we are very excited to share it with you!BiographyA native of Ohio, Mr. Ailing received his vocal training at Bowling Green State University. He performed several major works in the Ohio area, and was a featured soloist with the BGSU Men's Chorus, Toledo Opera, and with the Toledo Symphony. Since his move to New York City, Scott has continued his career performing a wide variety of music with emphasis on sacred works. During 1998 and 1999, he was the featured ...
