Essentially a side project for Prince in the wake of his tour with Rick James in support of Dirty Mind (1980), the Time made their self-titled album debut in 1981, a few months before the release of Controversy. The band's lineup is listed as Morris Day (vocals), Jesse Johnson (guitar), Terry Lewis (bass), Jimmy Jam (keyboards), Monte Moir (keyboards), and Jellybean Johnson (drums) -- all from the same Minneapolis music scene as Prince -- though reportedly all the music heard on The Time was performed by Prince with the exception of the vocals and a couple synthesizer solos. Moreover, Prince wrote all but one of the songs. None of this information is evident in the liner notes, however (at least not on the initial edition), as the only sign of Prince's involvement is a production credit for Jamie Starr, one of his pseudonyms. The origin of the Time -- and subsequently Vanity 6 -- came about because Prince was a prolific artist and his record label, Warner Brothers, recognizing this, gave him its contractual blessing to create side projects. This worked out well for Prince since he was able to release music in addition to his proper solo recordings, and he would have himself an opening band for his tours. The Time may have not written or performed the music on their self-titled debut, but they were fully capable of performing it live on-stage as Prince's opening act. Far from a bunch of stage actors, the Time was actually a talented bunch: Morris Day would prove himself a charismatic frontman and had previously co-written "Partyup" for Dirty Mind; Jesse Johnson would develop as a virtuosic guitarist; and most accomplished of all, Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam would become a first-rate production duo, helming Janet Jackson's Control in 1986, among many other projects. As for the album itself, The Time is short on material, featuring only six songs, a couple of them quite slight, but there are a few truly fantastic songs here on a par with Prince's best work of the era, namely "Get It Up," "Cool," and "The Stick," all extended synth-funk jams in the eight-to-ten-minute range. Successive albums by the Time would be more typical of the band itself, yet The Time is no less noteworthy for the lack of the band's involvement; in fact, this debut release is especially noteworthy for Prince fans enamored of his Dirty Mind-era output, for the music here feels like a session of outtakes as sung by Morris Day. ~ Jason Birchmeier

4 stars The Time, way ahead of it's time
The time come on the seen in the 80's with it's own style of funk and showmanship that sometimes upstaged it's founder the purple one his royal badness, prince. this cd is great and the music still sounds as good as it did back in the day. definate buy for any fan of the time. I have this on vinyl already. just had to get in an updated format, because this music is like fine wine. It gets better with age.

5 stars Ya don't know what ya missing!
Praise to all of those acts from Minnesota! One thing is clear, back in the late 70's and early 80's Prince, the Time, Alexander O'neal, etc. were the hottest acts going in my opinion. Dynamic, showmanship, they did it all. And with Prince as the ring leader they excel above the rest. Always will be a fan, part of my history, a dam good part!

Time album

This album oozes attitude. From its opening "Wild And Loose," Morris never quits with his rantings ("Ain't nobody cool but me"). But his real talent, aside from his alleged sexual prowess, is his ability to get the most out of his band. What makes these grooves timeless are the immensely musical and tight players Mr. Day gathered. "777-9311," for instance, features some super cymbal work from Jellybean Johnson, and a frenzied guitar solo from Jesse Johnson. This is funk, early eighties style, with a certain Prince-ly flavor and plenty of humor. "Somebody get me a mirror!" "What time is it?" shouts Morris Day to kick off the album of the same name. "Time to get Wild And Loose!" is the resounding response he gets from The Time, the often unjustly overshadowed funk outfit from Minneapolis. Live Recording The Time: Morris Day (vocals); Jesse Johnson (guitar, vocals, drums); Jimmy Jam, Monte Moir (keyboards, vocals); Stacy Adams, Terry Lewis (bass, background vocals); Jellybean Johnson (drums, percussion).

When Sheila Escovedo started going by Sheila E. and soared to the top of the R&B charts with 1984's "The Glamorous Life," those who didn't know anything about her background assumed that she was just another Vanity or another Apollonia -- in other words, a sexploitive Prince disciple who was entertaining but had limited ability as a vocalist. It's true that the singer/drummer/percussionist doesn't have a great voice, but anyone who was hip to her work with Azteca, Pete Escovedo (her father), and George Duke knew that she was an excellent musician. As a drummer/percussionist, Escovedo has major chops -- and even though she doesn't have a mind-blowing vocal range, she has no problem getting her points across on her debut solo album, The Glamorous Life. Produced by Prince, this is one of the best albums that came out of the Purple One's Minneapolis funk-rock empire in the 1980s. The hit title song is a classic, and the same goes for the quirky, new wave-ish "Oliver's House," the Latin-tinged "The Belle of St. Mark," and the funky instrumental "Shortberry Strawcake." Although Prince's stamp is all over this LP, Escovedo did most of the writing herself. The Glamorous Life isn't the only excellent album that Escovedo provided in the 1980s, but it's definitely the most essential. ~ Alex Henderson Sheila Escovedo hit the big time when she hooked up with Prince Rogers Nelson. The dimunitive pop/soul icon mentored the percussionist and shaped her into a glamourous star. She hit the big time with the hit single "The Glamorous Life" and toured and recorded as a member of Prince & The Revolution.

In the mid-'80s, Prince may have been the king of Paisley Park, but the Time frontman Morris Day was the sergeant-at-arms and the court jester simultaneously. With a flamboyant image, production aesthetic, and songwriting approach all closely aligned with those of his Purpleness, the Time appealed to the same cross-section of pop, funk, and R&B fans. The elegant psych-pop arrangement of the title track recalls AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY. The self-explanatory "My Drawers" dips into the more carnal side of the Minneapolis sound. The Time's best-known song, "Jungle Love," is infectious, high-quality synth funk with the kind of chanted interjections that have been tilting ears since the glory days of P-Funk. Jesse Johnson's solo here adds just the right guitar-hero touch to the proceedings. Throughout ICE CREAM CASTLE, Day camps it up just enough to let us know that he knows how outlandish he comes across. It's this ironic sense of humor that supplies the crucial difference between the Time and the more gifted but notoriously humorless Prince.

After the temporary collapse of the Time, Morris Day went into the recording studio for his first solo excursion. While the trademarked Minneapolis pop-funk sound still remains at the forefront of each composition, the absence of the magic is extremely noticeable in the production booth. That aside, The Color of Success offers to fans what Day does best, funky but accessible dance-pop music in the vein of many of his Minneapolis contemporaries. While the album runs a little bit on the short side, there is no filler and it is surprisingly consistent from start to finish. Fans of Day's work with the Time will enjoy this record, but first-time listeners would be better-served checking out his earlier work first. ~ Rob Theakston

Jesse Johnson's Ultimate Collection gathers the highlights from his three currently out-of-print albums -- Jesse Johnson's Revue, Shockadelica, and Every Shade of Love -- in addition to hard-to-find B-sides. Hits such as "Love Struck," "Can You Help Me," "Be Your Man," and "Crazay," and more obscure songs like "Free World," "Fool's Paradise," and "Fast Girls," provide a well-rounded look at Johnson's unique blend of soul, funk, and rock. The new, previously unreleased "Vibe" adds another layer of depth to the album. ~ Heather Phares Includes liner notes by Tim Glover. Producer: Jesse Johnson. Compilation producer: Tony Gaspard, A. VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD  (2002)

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine." Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." VH1 PRESENTS THE CORRS LIVE IN DUBLIN is a fine mix of the band's greatest hits with a few well-chosen covers, which will doubtless reach out to new fans and longtime Corrs aficionados alike. Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion).

Nadama Heart To Heart CD  (1995)

Time album
CD $13.39  Audio Samples
Heart to Heart is a somewhat surprising CD from Nadama. Using an acoustic piano as his centerpiece, he has created a strongly atmospheric album that is disguised as romantic new age music. The acoustic piano keeps the adventurer honest. The synthesizer, at times, takes listeners beyond themselves. A simple electric piano is the bridge, and gentle percussion enhances the experience. This is a fun disc. It is mainstream and there are no major disappointments or major wows. ~ Jim Brenholts

Herbaliser Fabric Live 26 CD  (2006)

Time songs
CD $14.29  4 stars Audio Samples
The Fabriclive series has suffered few misses -- nearly every volume has featured high-class DJs mixing more dangerously and adventurously than they would anywhere else, with better results than appear on any other commercial releases. Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba of the Herbaliser certainly haven't lacked for opportunities to host freewheeling mix albums -- they do record for Ninja Tune, after all -- but another chance is always welcome. Fabriclive.26 is equal to their 2003 mix Herbal Blend for the Solid Steel sessions, and that's heavy praise. Differences, though, are apparent, beginning with an indication that the Herbaliser is less willing to dredge the vagaries of pop culture than on Herbal Blend. This is a straight hip-hop mix for all practical purposes, with only a few choice funk nuggets strategically placed when necessary. And for energy, it's unmatched by any recent hip-hop releases, beginning with the opener, "Dogsz N Sledgez," where Million Dan punctuates his dancehall raps with interjecting growls and whistles. An up-to-the-minute track from Blufoot with Yungun moves into a golden-age classic from Hurby Luv Bug and Antoinette without pausing a beat (or sounding like they're reaching for material). Most of the transitions are quick cuts that fit the mood perfectly, even when they drop their own "None Other" (featuring Cappo) in the middle of the mix. British rap specifically, and underground rap in general, never get enough exposure (and don't think the grime fad solved anything), but with any luck, hip-hop fans will be hearing a lot more of British producer Blufoot and 7L & Esoteric disciple Apathy (who might get an album out on Atlantic if the White Stripes don't mind the sample). ~ John Bush DJ: The Herbaliser.
