2001 studio album celebrating their 35th anniversary. Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull guests on flute on one track. 14 tracks. including 'My Love Is In America', 'I Wandered By A Brookside' and more. 2006.
Personnel includes: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Lisa Coleman (keyboards, background vocals); Dr. Fink (keyboards); Bobby Z (drums). Engineers: Mic Guzanski, Ross Pallone, Bob Mockler. Controversy continues in the same vein of new wave-tinged funk on Dirty Mind, emphasizing Prince's fascination with synthesizers and synthesizing disparate pop music genres. It is also more ambitious than its predecessor, attempting to tackle social protest ("Controversy," "Ronnie, Talk to Russia," "Annie Christian") along with sex songs ("Jack U Off," "Sexuality"), and it tries hard to bring funk to a rock audience and vice versa. Even with all of Prince's ambitions, the music on Controversy doesn't represent a significant breakthrough from Dirty Mind, and it is often considerably less catchy and memorable. Nevertheless, Prince's talents as musician make the record enjoyable, even if it isn't as compelling as most of his catalog. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine CONTROVERSY is the fourth release from Prince, and it continues in the tradition of his debut DIRTY MIND, with funky rhythms, throbbing electronic accents and titillating lyrics. Featuring the successful title cut and the club hit "Private Joy," CONTROVERSY works off Prince's infamous juxtaposition of sex and religion. This is explicitly depicted in songs such as "Annie Christian" and the sultry ballad "Do Me, Baby" where during a long instrumental sequence, his sighs blatantly indicate carnal activity. As with many of his recordings, Prince maintains complete creative control here by handling all the writing, playing and production himself.

Early 80's Prince This is prince in 1981. MTV was born , Ronnie was in the white house and disco was dead. The music landscape was changing and Prince was in his early stages of music domination. This cd is a classic from the first track to the last.Prince deals with subjects from sex to religon in typical prince fashion. If you love Prince in his early years you'll love this record. This album kicks! I really like this album, love the songs, the instrument playng...it rocks!!
The songs are very cool, funky and catchy and they produce sounds that no one other than the one and only..Prince would be best at creating. It has such a diversion of music like pop, funk, rock...and the lyrics are also very thought provoking!!

This is Album will go down... as one of the greatest albums of all time. Every song on this album is really good except for the song "Do Me Baby" which is a very soft, fluffy, unprincelike song. I have no Idea why Prince had to write that song. But other than that, every song is a winner. He does his high licks with his voice on the songs, he plays the guitar very well on it and the songwriting for these other songs are just genius. What can I say? The "Purple One" hit the nail on the head with this one! Submitted by Ben (Mountain View, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Controversy
$6.99 UK remastered pressing. In the ferment of Brazilian music which was taking place in the post Bossa Nova period...when the most unlikely musical figures had suddenly been thrust onto a world stage, many quite amazing musical explosions came to the surface, as Tropicalia took hold, and the unlikely sounds of funk, prog, psychedelic rock and lord knows what else were filtered through the unique sensibility of Brazil.....Som Imaginario! Rev-Ola. 2006.
Solo performer: Prince (various instruments). Recorded at Alpha Studios, Burbank, California. Expanding the urban R&B and funk approach of his debut, Prince is a considerably more accomplished record than his first effort, featuring the first signs of his adventurous, sexy signature sound. Although the album is still rather uneven, a handful of songs rank as classics. "I Wanna Be Your Lover" is excellent lite funk and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" is a wonderful soulful plea, but "I Feel for You," a sexy slice of urban R&B with a strong ...

$9.89 Live Recording
Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Dez (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Wendy Melvoin, J.J. (vocals). Recorded at Sunset Sound & Uptown, Los Angeles, California. With Dirty Mind, Prince had established a wild fusion of funk, rock, new wave, and soul that signaled he was an original, maverick talent, but it failed to win him a large audience. After delivering the sound-alike album, Controversy, Prince revamped his sound and delivered the double album 1999. Where his earlier albums had been a fusion of organic and electronic sounds, 1999 was constructed almost entirely on synthesizers by Prince himself. Naturally, the effect was slightly more mechanical and robotic than his previous work and strongly recalled the electro-funk experiments of several underground funk and hip-hop artists at the time. Prince had also constructed an album dominated by computer funk, but he didn't simply ...

Controversy
$9.49 Prince & The Revolution: Prince (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Wendy Melvoin (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Matt "Dr." Fink (vocals, keyboards); Brown Mark (vocals, bass); Bobby Z (percussion). Additional personnel: Apollonia (vocals); Novi Novog (violin, viola); David Coleman, Suzie Katayama (cello). Engineers include: Susan Rogers, Peggy Mac, David Riukin. Prince designed Purple Rain as the project that would make him a superstar, and, surprisingly, that is exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, Purple Rain finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superbly crafted songs. Even its best-known songs don't tread conventional territory: the bass-less "When Doves Cry" is an eerie, spare neo-psychedelic masterpiece; "Let's Go Crazy" is a furious blend of metallic guitars, ...

Controversy
$13.85 Personnel: Roger Tallroth (12-string guitar); Mikael Marin (fiddle, viola). Audio Mixers: Olov Johansson; Roger Tallroth. Recording information: Minami Aoyama Mandala, Tokyo, Japan (01/28/2005-01/30/2005). Arranger: Mikael Marin. Väsen have been around for well over a decade, refining their sound and producing a series of delightful albums, first for their Swedish home market and then finding a global audience. Just how far they reach now is evident from the fact they recorded this live disc in Japan. The humor in their sound is more evident live, but the delightful interplay between nyckelharpa, fiddle, and guitar is apparent throughout, right from the opener, "Björkbergspolskan." The material largely draws from their last two discs, which is fine -- those albums were two of the best of their lengthy career. There's a playful spirit behind the music on tracks like "Flippen," and the melodies weave beautifully in and out with an almost telepathic communication between the musicians. Add in a DVD of interviews, videos, and performance clips and you have an excellent package that's far more than a live souvenir, but an illustration of what a band can achieve in performance. ...
