Live Recording
Personnel: Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger (vocals, guitar). Additional personnel: Carole Ide (organ). Shenandoah: Steve Ide (guitar, trombone, vocals); Bob Putnam (guitar, piano, organ, vocals); Dan Velika (bass, vocals); Terry A La Berry (drums, percussion). Recorded in late summer of 1981, Precious Friend, the second of Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger's live collaborations, is pretty much what you would expect. Seeger is his usual folksy self, leading the crowd through a series of folk tunes ranging from the traditional African chant "Wimoweh (Mbube)" to Harry Chapin's "Circles," while Guthrie mixes his warm counterculture storytelling with selections of old ragtime, gospel, and folk. And while Seeger's singalongs and Guthrie's raps can wear a bit thin after a while, there are some genuine moments of both energy and hominess that are quite nice. Listening to Pete Seeger is kind of like hearing a museum piece, which in his case is fine. On the other hand, tracks such as Guthrie's cover of Tom Paxton's "I'm Changing My Name to Chrysler" and especially "Neutron Bomb" have lost much of their initial charm with time. He's more successful with time-tested material such as the 1920s ragtime of "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone," as well as Blind Blake's "Run, Come See Jerusalem" and a trio of tunes by his father. Still, it's Seeger's homage to his friend and fellow Weaver, Lee Hays, who had recently passed away, that is the album's true highlight. Included along with the Weavers hits "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" and "If I Had a Hammer" (co-written by Seeger and Hays) are a couple of wonderful Hays originals -- the old union number "Raggedy, Raggedy" and the morbidly funny "In Dead Earnest," written shortly before his death. Seeger and Guthrie's sense of tradition may be warm and inviting in a live setting, but mixing a little more of what made Guthrie's late-'70s work special with the folksier material would have made for a better recording. ~ Brett Hartenbach
Arlo Guthrie Precious Friend Songs Precious Friend Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) More Arlo than Pete, but that's ok This concert is what folk music is all about. A sweet, nostalgic, hopeful, sad, funny, good time. Arlo spins a couple of classic stories, Pete conducts a few of his inimitable sing- alongs, and the backup band, Shenandoah, cooks. | | Reckless Kelly Was Here CDs (2006) With DVD
Precious Friend
$19.75 This double-CD and DVD live document of the Austin country-rock group Reckless Kelly's 2006 show at that town's La Zona Rosa club features a series of electrifying performances of songs like fellow Austin musician Alejandro Escovedo's "Castanets," Richard Thompson's "52 Vincent Black Lightning," and the Beatles' "Revolution," as well as their own "Motel Cowboy Show" and "Baby's Gone Blues." After four celebrated albums and one acoustic live album, Austin, TX's (via Portland, OR) Reckless Kelly let the hammer down and offer a smoking double-live document that comes with a bonus DVD, offering fans a look at the excitement that occurred at Marcia Ball's La Zona Rosa in March of 2006. The show tracks material from their recorded output from 1998's Millican through to the mighty loud and proud Wicked Twisted Road and some choice covers ("Castanets" by Alejandro Escovedo, Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," and "Revolution" by the Beatles). This is one of those double discs that captures literally everything: the crowd noise is there everywhere -- even the crowd singing along, which can be a bit off-putting -- but it's really a small complaint because every utterance, every single flaw and hiccup is there, right out front. The mix is simply incredible. Throughout recorded music history, it's seldom that the crackling live energy of a band sweating out a set gets captured on tape. The Who's Live at Leeds is one of those, as well as Humble Pie's Performance: ...
