When they burst out of the New York underground/CBGB's movement, the Heads stood apart from the pack because not only were they unlike anything that gone before, they were even anomalous to their contemporaries. A million miles from the detached irony of Blondie or the willful primitivism of the Ramones, the Talking Heads virtually invented geek-rock, setting the stage for everyone from the Violent Femmes to They Might Be Giants. Lyrically, David Byrne came off as the guy who thought too much about everything. Fortunately, he also happened to be a unique visionary, whose quirky, hyper-cerebral modernism echoed the work of poet John Ashbery and "serious" composer Robert Ashley.
All this high-mindedness doesn't detract from the infectious rock & roll appeal of the tunes on the band's debut album, though. Their twitchy, preppies-on-amphetamines rhythms and semi-neurotic gestalt fueled tunes like twisted anthem "Psycho Killer" and the jubilant "Pulled Up." Byrne's high, yelping tenor was the perfect complement to the band's tightly-wound but kinetic rhythms, and 77 is an auspicious debut.

Spin (p.104) - "With his distressed falsetto, David Byrne is new wave's first definitive voice." Uncut (p.82) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[The] remarkable cohabitation of painterly, arty ambitions and fascination with the lissom qualities of the groove can be seen from their very first single." Mojo (Publisher) (p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Their claustrophobic tunes of social unease, mathematical arrangements and front man David Byrne's self-conscious take on mundane events elevated them far beyond what would become new wave." Talking Heads '77 album
$8.75 The Heads' second album found them building on the twitchy "new wave" sound they established with their debut while using that approach as a springboard for new lyrical and musical innovations. The band's sonic pallette is a bit wider here; the interplay between the guitars of David Byrne and Jerry Harrison is more fully developed here, are Harrison's keyboard contributions (he was, after all, strictly a keys man in the Modern Lovers, one of the Heads' primary influences). The band displays diversity ...
| | Talking Heads Fear Of Music CD (1979)
Talking Heads '77 CD music
$5.99 Principally recorded at Chris and Tina's loft, Long Island City, Queens, New York.
FEAR OF MUSIC is the point of transition between the angular art-school new wave of the Heads' early work and the P-Funk-inspired modalism of their early-'80s output. While there's nothing as funky or visionary as REMAIN IN LIGHT here, the album represents a ...
| | Talking Heads Remain In Light CD (1980)
Talking Heads '77 music CDs
$6.09 Though the previous album FEAR OF MUSIC provided a bit of foreshadowing, Talking Heads fans could never have guessed what was in store for them with the release of REMAIN IN LIGHT. A visionary work of innovation and inspiration, it's arguably one of the finest albums of the 1980s. The band leaves behind the two-guitars-over-a-quirky-rock-beat ethic of their previous work, adopting a funky, modal approach. Abandoning ...
| | Talking Heads Speaking In Tongues CD (1983)
Talking Heads '77 songs
$6.19 On REMAIN IN LIGHT, the Heads fused their twitchy, intellectual geek-rock sensibilities with an organic, spiritual funkiness that catapulted them into a new artistic realm, virtually unfettered by the shackles of their "new wave" past. SPEAKING IN TONGUES picks up where that album left off, expanding on the band's newfound funk aesthetic and even upping the danceability quotient ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Talking Heads '77 album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, ...

| | Judah Johnson Kisses And Interrogation CD (2003)
Talking Heads '77 album
$11.39 The contemplative soul of Michigan's Judah Johnson oozes cleanly throughout Kisses and Interrogation, the quartet's debut full-length. Having survived various lineup changes in the years preceding the album's release, Daniel Johnson, the band's leader in more than just vocals and guitar, spurred the band on to release the result of its tumultuous and passionate brief history. Recording the album in Detroit and Owosso, MI, the group was bolstered by the addition of bassist Rodrigo Palma and keyboardist Steven Nistor. Charles Koltak continued to serve as the rhythmic backbone of the band on drums. Opening with the ambient and soulful instrumental "Look at My Hands," ...
