Former rock critic Chrissie Hynde launched the Pretenders with an engaging, yet passive, version of the Kinks' "Stop Your Sobbing." She unveiled her own persona fully on The Pretenders, which contains a series of excellent compositions marked by her sensual vocals and brilliant sense of dynamics. An understanding of pop's structures allowed Hynde to exploit them to her own ends while sympathetic support, particularly that of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, used the excitement of rock without reference to its cliches. Tough and opinionated, Chrissie Hynde's first declaration of independence established the formula she proceeded to follow.

Pretenders Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Go Chrissie go!!! Wow, right on!! I’ve always loved girlie rock bands and/or bands with chick lead singers/guitar players..ever since the halycon days of Janis Joplin and Suzi Q.!! So when Chrissie Hynde’s Pretenders hit the scene, I nearly fell off my proverbial rocking chair. “Brass in pocket” realy killed me and so did “Precious”. Chrissie sure knows how to make the rockin’ hearts twang and the guys are awesome musicians to boot!!
AWESOME album by a HUGE band!

Go Chrissie go!!!! I've always been into girlie rock or/and bands with chick singers/guitar players since the halycon days of Janis Joplin and Suzi Q, so when The Pretenders came out with this album and I listened to "Brass in pocket", I nearly fell off my proverbial rockin' chair. "Precious" is another killer song. There's no beating them, Chrissie and the boys brought the rock back into roll!!!!

Purchase Pretenders CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | R E M Murmur CD (1983)
Pretenders album
$6.85 R.E.M.'s full-length debut is a landmark album that set the standard for the next 10 years of indie rock. The Athens quartet combined Byrdsy, folk-rock guitar jangle with obscurantist lyrics and a post-punk compositional sensibility to create a vibrant new sound that would soon be imitated by every high-school poet with a Rickenbacker guitar. R.E.M. was also one of the first bands to make the long, hard journey from college radio (when it was still college radio) to mainstream acceptance, and managed the difficult task of maintaining its integrity at every step along the way.
MURMUR, far from an embryonic debut, shows a fully-formed unit with a strong artistic vision. (It was preceded by two legendary underground releases: The "Radio Free Europe" single--which was re-recorded for MURMUR--and the CHRONIC TOWN EP.) Producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon's lofty reputations would have remained intact even if ...
| | B-52's B-52S CD (1979)
Pretenders CD music
$6.55 Formed in Athens, Georgia, the B-52's emerged from this nominal outback with 'Rock Lobster', a quirky pop song that drew critical praise and engendered a major recording contract. The B-52's maintained the originality of that debut single, with staccato voices, vox guitar and surreal lyrics. Drawing on 60s kitsch ephemera, both aurally and visually, ...
| | Pretenders II CD (1981)
Pretenders music CDs
$9.39 The band look magnificent on the cover as they pose with make-up or heavily retouched faces. They look confident, knowing that their follow-up is almost as good as the debut. Chrissie and Ray Davies were stepping out at this time, hence the opening track, "The Adultress," as Hynde whispers her confession over a furious wall of sound, to be immediately ...
| | Who's Next CD (1971) Remastered
Pretenders songs
$10.45 Recorded between 1968 & 1971. Includes liner notes by Pete Townshend, John Atkins, and Chris Charlesworth.
This remastered edition of WHO'S NEXT features seven bonus tracks.
Though Pete Townshend was originally unhappy with WHO'S NEXT, it was quickly welcomed by critics and fans, becoming one of the most celebrated titles in their enduring catalog. His frustrations boiled down to the album being a compromised version of a larger work he'd envisioned, LIFEHOUSE, which proved too unwieldy to be realized. Expanded to a two-disc set with essays by both Townshend and John Atkins, the original nine-song album is expanded with six additional studio tracks.
These include earlier versions of the album's songs and a cover of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Baby Don't You Do It." Recorded in New York during the spring of 1971 in the midst of a fraying relationship with producer Kit Lambert, the early cuts clearly don't have the sonic breadth and wallop of what the Who achieved back in England later in the year, but are fascinating nonetheless. The second disc was recorded live before an invited audience, and was originally part of the album's grand plan. Mixing new material with covers ("Road Runner;" Mose Allison's "Young Man Blues") and original tunes from their past (the anthem "My Generation"), the band plays with a palpable urgency and fire. This was the Who at the peak of its powers, a status the group would ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Pretenders album
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers ...

| | Louis Armstrong Jazz Is Back In Grand Rapids CD (2002)
Pretenders songs
$12.09 Recorded live at the Civic Auditorium, Grand Rapids, Michigan, March 26, 1956.
This previously unreleased concert by Louis Armstrong & His All-Stars is a historical gem. Recorded on March 26, 1956, at the Civic Auditorium in Grand Rapids, MI, it affords jazz fans a chance to hear what the barnstorming Armstrong's shows were like in heartland America, since the whole concert is presented here, with decent sound and only minimally intrusive crowd noise. Armstrong's affable presence is pervasive, but not always center stage, as each member of the All-Stars gets his turn in the course of the revue. Bass player Arvell Shaw, in particular, shines on "How High the Moon," and his playing on "Mack the Knife" is another highlight. The Brecht song is a perfect vehicle for Armstrong's singing style and his penchant for treating words like they were a string of notes in one of his amazing horn solos. Longtime Armstrong duet partner Velma Middleton gets a solo turn on the hard-shouted "Blues ŕ la Hey Bob-A-Rebob" and joins Armstrong for two semi-comedic duets on "That's My Desire" and "Kokomo." While this disc can hardly be deemed essential, it is still a joy to listen to, and when viewed as a historical ...
| | Fous De La Mer Stars And Fishes CD (2004)
Pretenders album
$10.39 Fous De La Mer's STARS AND FISHES is a sleek and ambient recording that features the sexy voice of Sol Galarreta. Backed by atmospheric keyboard sounds and earthy drum loops, this music glows with a slow-burning intensity. Sung in both French and English, Galarreta's voice often hangs on major 7th and 9th intervals. This not only gives this album a romantic ...

| | Grateful Dead Fillmore West 1969 CDs (2005)
Pretenders music CDs
$25.19 Although many would argue that the Grateful Dead's groundbreaking LIVE DEAD album, the first-ever 16-track concert recording, couldn't be improved upon, the Rhino label boldly challenges that notion with FILLMORE WEST 1969. This three-disc set expands on the beloved original collection, presenting those legendary performances alongside a slew of additional tunes from the Dead's famous stint at San Francisco's Fillmore West in February and March of '69.
The first disc is the most blues-heavy of the three, with the Dead offering up a surprisingly straightforward version of "I'm a King Bee" and a spacious rendition of "Turn on Your Lovelight." Much of LIVE DEAD is drawn from what appears on the second disc here. It's the main event of FILLMORE WEST 1969, and features the glorious psych workouts of "Dark Star," "St. Stephen," and "The Eleven," which stand as a favorite musical triptych in the Dead canon and showcase Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, and company in thrillingly adventurous form. Rounding out this formidable live outing, the third disc finds the ensemble launching into the fierce "That's It for the Other One," and getting definitively heady on the proto "space" jams "Drums," "Jam," and "Feedback." ...
