Though the previous album FEAR OF MUSIC provided a bit of foreshadowing, Talking Heads fans could never have guessed what was in store for them with the release of REMAIN IN LIGHT. A visionary work of innovation and inspiration, it's arguably one of the finest albums of the 1980s. The band leaves behind the two-guitars-over-a-quirky-rock-beat ethic of their previous work, adopting a funky, modal approach. Abandoning traditional song form and chord progressions, the tunes here are built around layers of overdubbed keyboard, guitar and percussion parts that weave around each other in an almost fugue-like manner, relying on the adding and subtracting of elements in the mix for dynamics, instead of on chord changes and structural development.
It was a radical approach for a rock band, and it's reflected in the lyrics as well. Byrne abandons his urban paranoia of old in favor of a more spiritual, third world-influenced style of writing. Adrian Belew injects some grit with his postpunk-psychedelia guitar work (suggestive of his upcoming work with King Crimson, as is the overall sound of REMAIN IN LIGHT). This one is for the ages.

Talking Heads Remain In Light Songs Remain In Light Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Remain transfixed When this came out, I didn't like punk or new wave, I was listening to prog rock and songwriters like James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. My friend said 'you've got to hear this' and with a little bit of rolled enhancement, my mind took in the splendor of new wave and punk music permanently from that point on. Finally I understood the sounds, attitudes, perspectives, and beats that made Patti Smith, the Sex Pistols, Blondie and Elvis Costello so great. Listening Wind really got my attention because the music portrayed the lyrics so perfectly and no one had written a rock song like that about that kind of issue before. Nor had I heard anything as magnificent and strangely marvelous as Once in a lifetime -this is not my beautiful house, not my beautiful wife, where am I?. The Brian Eno collaborations of rythmically repeating building up to a layered crescendo kind of songs were also truly unique, as Byrne said it was music that you had to get up and dance to but at the same time made you think. Best of all, it came before one of the greatest albums ever, Speaking In Tongues. Submitted by Andrew M. (Santa Rosa, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Talking Heads' best album I absolutely love this album. It encapsulates everything that makes Talking Heads great, from world music polyrhythms to pop/rock/punk sensibilities. Also, Adrian Belew's solo on "The Great Curve" is one of my favourites, seeming to carry on the style of Jimi Hendrix. Truly a great album. Remain in Light For me, this is Talking Heads finest album.
In terms of its incorporation of a wide range of musical styles, there are few albums its equal. Funk, gospel, and African rhythms are mixed in with the 'Heads usual edgy rock style with impressive effect.
A much easier album to listen to than Fear of Music, their previous album, Remain in Light is nevertheless an album that reveals new things with each listening. I've listened to it hundreds of times and I will never tire of it.

$8.75 The Heads' second album found them building on the twitchy "new wave" sound they established with their debut while using that approach as a springboard for new lyrical and musical innovations. The band's sonic pallette is a bit wider here; the interplay between the guitars of David Byrne and Jerry Harrison is more fully developed here, are Harrison's keyboard ...
