On Tom Lehrer's second studio album, he got a little more daring and biting, particularly on "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park," "The Masochism Tango," and "We Will All Go Together When We Go." Six years, after all, had elapsed since his 1953 debut, and social mores had loosened, if only a little. There's also one of his most well-known pieces, "It Makes a Fellow Proud to Be a Soldier." Lehrer made the unusual decision to record an identical set of material live the same year, issuing that as An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer. The live record might be a tad preferable for its slightly more freewheeling ambience. In any case, both More of Tom Lehrer and An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer are included in their entirety on the Rhino box set The Remains of Tom Lehrer. ~ Richie Unterberger

An Evening Wasted With...
$7.69 SONGS & MORE SONGS BY TOM LEHRER contains the two albums SONGS BY TOM LEHRER and MORE OF TOM LEHRER on one CD. Originally released in 1953 and 1959.
Tom Lehrer recorded rather sporadically starting in the 1950s then abruptly retired in the mid-'60s from his unique solo musical comedy act. He's a competent pianist with a voice that is perfect for his original material. This compilation combines both of his records that were originally pressed and sold privately on the Lehrer label, which he later re-recorded with improved sound for Reprise as Songs by Tom Lehrer and the live concert An Evening Wasted ...

| | Deep Purple This Time Around: Live In Tokyo 1975 CDs (2001)
An Evening Wasted With...
$14.89 The Mark IV lineup of Deep Purple was the last before this innovative heavy metal band's initial 1976 breakup. By this time, a variety of factors were sounding the death knell. Vocalist David Coverdale, guitarist Tommy Bolin, keyboardist Jon Lord, bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes, and drummer Ian Paice were facing business and personal pressures, and these things inevitably affected Deep Purple's music. The Mark IV Deep Purple's last concerts in Japan occurred in December 1975, and Bolin's severe drug and alcohol addiction would kill him one year later. The final Japanese show was recorded and released in that country and a few others in a severely edited form in 1977. Finally, 2001's two-CD set This Time Around: Live in Tokyo '75 captures the entire concert with remixed and remastered sound. Some good moments occur, but so do sloppy ones from an enormously talented yet obviously drained group. Musically speaking, Lord and Paice make notably valiant efforts to hold it all together. Coverdale's voice is strong in spots while dodgy in others. Hughes' bass playing ...
| | Marc Live Validation CD (2004)
An Evening Wasted With...
$26.79 One could spend hours talking about all the local flavors that exist in hip-hop these days. Some MCs have strong regional prejudices, but others keep themselves creatively healthy by turning to different parts of the United States for inspiration -- which is what Marc Live (formerly Marc Rippin') does on his first solo effort, Validation. The former Raw Breed member favors a very bicoastal approach on this 2004 release, drawing on influences from both California (Ice-T, Dr. Dre) and the Northeast (Redman, the Notorious B.I.G.). A Bronx native with a Miami address and many Los Angeles connections, Live features guest rappers who became famous in California (Ice-T) or in New York (50 Cent, Kool Keith, Smoothe da Hustler). Of course, some of the rappers who have been closely identified with L.A. are originally from the East Coast -- including Ice-T, Everlast, and Donald D -- and for Live, having a bicoastal outlook makes perfect sense on this 2004 release, which lists Ice and Kool Keith as executive producers. By 2004 standards, Validation isn't groundbreaking; many of the topics Live addresses -- the dangers of thug life, the surplus of sucker MCs who lack genuine rhyming talent -- have been addressed on numerous hip-hop discs over the years. But if Validation is less than innovative, it is still successful on several levels. The grooves are infectious, the production is attractive, and ...

| | Don't Stop: Recording Tap CD (2008)
An Evening Wasted With...
$16.29 Uncovered from a stack of moldy boxes in a weathered garage, 47 mangled master tapes of disco jams and early rap cuts finally get their chance to see the light of day on Don't Stop: Recording Tap. Jeremiah Yisrael's short-lived Tap label only issued a few 12"s between 1981-1983, none of which would receive any airplay or acclaim, but in that time he managed to capture a stunning document of the underground boogie sounds of nighttime in New York City on his reel to reel. His paranoia with recording contracts squashed the potential of bigger deals for his artists, including one for Missy Dee with Sugar Hill Records, and his acute perfectionism led to endless takes on the cutting room floor, but this same compulsiveness led to some amazing Jordache-bumping dance numbers, meticulously composed and performed repeatedly until the funk had the perfect flavor to satisfy his picky palate. Recruiting R&B veteran Gene Redd, Jr. (who had orchestrated hits for Motown, Chess, and Mercury, among others) to arrange ...
