Personnel includes: Joni Mitchell (vocals, acoustic guitar). Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Clouds is a stark stunner, a great leap forward for Joni Mitchell. Vocals here are more forthright and assured than on her debut and exhibit a remarkable level of subtle expressiveness. Guitar alone is used in accompaniment, and the variety of playing approaches and sounds gotten here is most impressive. "The Fiddle and the Drum," a protest song that imaginatively compares the Vietnam-era warmongering U.S. government to a bitter friend, dispenses with instrumental accompaniment altogether. The sketches presented of lovers by turns depressive ("Tin Angel"), roguish ("That Song About the Midway"), and faithless ("The Gallery") are vividly memorable. Forthright lyrics about the unsureness of new love ("I Don't Know Where I Stand"), misuse of the occult ("Roses Blue"), and mental illness ("I Think I Understand") are very striking. Mitchell's classic singer/songwriter standards "Chelsea Morning" and "Both Sides Now" respectively receive energetically vibrant and warmly thoughtful performances. Imaginatively unusual and subtle harmonies abound here, never more so in her body of work than on the remarkable "Songs to Aging Children Come," which sets floridly impressionistic lyrics to a lovely tune that is supported by perhaps the most remarkably sophisticated chord sequence in all of pop music. Mitchell's riveting self-portrait on the album's cover is a further asset. This essential release is a must-listen. ~ David Cleary Mitchell's second album, like her first, focuses almost exclusively on her acoustic guitar and voice. Though the sound is similar to her debut recording, there's a lot of progression evident in the songwriting here. Mitchell comes across as the quintessential folk poet, highly literate, guardedly emotional, somewhat collegiate, but full of enough talent and idiosyncrasy to pull listeners into her web. "Both Sides Now," a beautiful low-key anthem of disillusionment from which the album's title is derived, became something of an anthem for the Woodstock set. Other, less well-known tunes like "That Song About the Midway" and the mysterious-sounding "Roses Blue" make just as much of an impression. The joyous "Chelsea Morning" would eventually provide President Clinton with a name for his daughter (even if he did think Judy Collins wrote the song).
Joni Mitchell Clouds Songs Clouds Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Remembering the past Somehow, in searching for albums of all sorts, I remembered Joni Mitchell from my past. My daughter is in college now, so I was remembering that when I was in college in the early 70s, I had taken a radio class. We had had to create a 1/2 hr radiao program and i did one on Joni Mitchell. I ordered this album so I could share with my daughter songs that meant a lot to me when I was her age. Both Sides Now, in the clear beautiful voice of Joni Mitchell, put me into tears of thanks, so that I could remember my younger life in a special way. Her songs sure stand the test of time, as well. Everyone need this album! Submitted by a.owens (St. Louis, MO.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
What an artist! I’ve often said that The Beatles were the geniuses of rock, but it was more of a collective genius with George Martin included. They fed off of each other’s individual muse. Joni Mitchell, however, is a genius all on her own! She came out of the early-to-mid-60s folk scene, but her music defies categories such as folk, rock, folk-rock, etc. I refuse to get caught up with trivial terminology of this sort. Great music is certainly more than a categorical phenomenon.
Joni’s music and lyrics meld into a seamless, living, breathing whole – taking on a magical essence that’s greater than the sum of its parts. And those parts are some of the most brilliantly advanced and artful musings you will find anywhere. Words elude me when attempting to describe what I feel when I listen to her music. She reaches deep inside of me – and I’m never quite the same after listening to one of her albums. She presents complexities so simply. One forgets how advanced the music is as she draws the listener into a world of magic and aural wonder. Her meaningful lyrics are veritable stories one can become lost in – filled with thought-provoking relevance. The music supports her storytelling, bursting with sensual richness. The sound of her voice alone makes my soul swoon. And after listening to her work, most other popular music will seem so incredibly shallow.
One could describe the music on “Clouds” (1969) as both cosmic and earthy at the same time. It’s a fabulous collection of songs, and one of my favorite albums. Included here is the incredible “Both Sides, Now,” which ranks among the most intoxicatingly gorgeous songs I know; a song that can reduce me to tears. If you are new to Joni Mitchell, I suggest starting with “Clouds” or “Song to a Seagull.” Get to know her through these two, then continue on.
Joni Mitchell is a genius in the truest sense of the word. She is an ARTIST of the highest order.
Cheers,
Murray

Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, piano); Stephen Stills (bass); Lee Keefer (banshee). All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Joni Mitchell's debut release is a concept album. Side one, subtitled "I Came to the City," generally exhibits songs about urban subjects that are often dour or repressed in some way. "Out of the City and Down to the Seaside," by contrast, is a celebration of nature and countryside, mostly containing selections of a charming, positive, or more outgoing ...

Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, piano); Theresa Adams (cello); Paul Horn (flute, clarinet); Jim Horn (baritone saxophone); Milt Holland (percussion). This wonderfully varied release shows a number of new tendencies in Joni Mitchell's work, some of which would come to fuller fruition on subsequent albums. "The Arrangement," "Rainy Night House," and "Woodstock" contain lengthy instrumental sections, presaging the extensive non-vocal ...

$10.99 Co-founders Dennis Davison (ex-United States of Existence) and Jonathan Lea (ex-Revolver) originally met in 1986 after Lea answered an ad Davison had placed in a local paper. Davison had been looking for a lead guitarist to join his then-current band Playground, whose members had moved to L.A. from Maryland. The duo's friendship flourished into a longtime partnership thereafter. In 1989, Davison and Lea disbanded Playground and formed Jigsaw Seen. Drummer Teddy Freese (ex-Yipes!, who had a Top 100 hit with their cover of the Beach Boys' "Darlin'," ex-Spanic Boys) joined in 1993, followed by bassist David Nolte(ex-the Last) in 1996. They gigged around L.A., attracting the attention of the New Jersey-based Skyclad Records, which issued their debut album, Shortcut Through Clown Alley, in 1990. This was followed by a five-song EP, My Name Is Tom, in 1991. The band then toured the U.S. (the Smashing Pumpkins even opened for them once). In 1993, Skyclad folded. At the time, Davison and Lea had been compiling Melody Fair: Bee Gees Tribute, a tribute to the early Bee Gees, which featured their cover of the title track. Davison and Lea then brought the project to the L.A.-based Eggbert Records and its successful release in 1994 led to future tribute projects. In the mid- to late '90s, in fact, Jigsaw Seen contributed to several various-artist tribute albums. In 1995, Eggbert released a Hollies tribute album, Sing Hollies in Reverse, which featured their splendid cover of "On a Carousel." They also recorded ...
