Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, piano); Theresa Adams (cello); Paul Horn (flute, clarinet); Jim Horn (baritone saxophone); Milt Holland (percussion). This wonderfully varied release shows a number of new tendencies in Joni Mitchell's work, some of which would come to fuller fruition on subsequent albums. "The Arrangement," "Rainy Night House," and "Woodstock" contain lengthy instrumental sections, presaging the extensive non-vocal stretches in later selections such as "Down to You" from Court and Spark. Jazz elements are noticeable in the wind solos of "For Free" and "Conversation," exhibiting an important influence that would extend as late as Mingus. The unusually poignant desolation of "The Arrangement" would surface more strongly in Blue. A number of the selections here ("Willy" and "Blue Boy") use piano rather than guitar accompaniment; arrangements here are often more colorful and complex than before, utilizing cello, clarinet, flute, saxophone, and percussion. Mitchell sings more clearly and expressively than on prior albums, most strikingly so on "Woodstock," her celebration of the pivotal 1960s New York rock festival. This number, given a haunting electric piano accompaniment, is sung in a gutsy, raw, soulful manner; the selection proves amply that pop music anthems don't all have to be loud production numbers. Songs here take many moods, ranging from the sunny, easygoing "Morning Morgantown" (a charming small-town portrait) to the nervously energetic "Conversation" (about a love triangle in the making) to the cryptically spooky "The Priest" (presenting the speaker's love for a Spartan man) to the sweetly sentimental classic "The Circle Game" (denoting the passage of time in touching terms) to the bouncy and vibrant single "Big Yellow Taxi" (with humorous lyrics on ecological matters) to the plummy, sumptuous title track (a celebration of creativity in all its manifestations). This album is yet another essential listen in Mitchell's recorded canon. ~ David Cleary Joni Mitchell's third release found her moving away from the wistful folk of her debut and CLOUDS, branching out into the progressive pop and jazz elements that would define her best work. The bright, poppy "Big Yellow Taxi," the album's single, is here, as is her epoch-defining "Woodstock," a soulful, stirring song about the 1969 rock festival that was later covered by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. But the material on LADIES OF THE CANYON is uniformly strong, demonstrating the mature style and vision that made her one of the leading voices of the '70s. On songs like, "Conversation" and the title cut, Mitchell's lyrics begin to turn toward to the quirky, personal poetry of interior landscapes, focusing with a writer's eye on scene, detail, and the dynamics of human relationships. Her instrumental palette is broadened too, with colorful, textured arrangements that make greater use of piano, as well as strings, reeds, electric keyboards, and percussion. Some songs, like the sweet, chiming "The Circle Game," seem a bit naïve, but these are counterbalanced with darker songs like "The Arrangement," a stark ballad. In all, LADIES OF THE CANYON was Mitchell's first classic album, one that helped pave the way for its watershed successor, BLUE.

Joni Mitchell Ladies Of The Canyon Songs Ladies Of The Canyon Music Ladies Of The Canyon Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The Canyon is grand! It was a long time before I gave up trying to replace my old 'Ladies of the Canyon' LP, which had long since become an oven-heated ashtray. Feeling it was a bit girly for a Brit Rock musician, I had always muttered something about 'soppy girlfriend'.
I couldn't believe how easy it was to find a copy with cduni, when I finally twigged I could maybe find a copy online. Shows you how often I'd done this before; it never OCCURRED to me I could get it on CD. But there it was in my mailbox here in sunny Aussie. And there it is playing in the background now. One of the few late 60's early 70's albums to not sound quaint. Bloody good reproduction of a fascinating artiste peaking early like Mr Dylan.
Get a copy and find out why Ms Mitchell was every bit as seminal for female singer/songwriters as was Bobbie D for us blokes. I love you, Joni Altough I´m 18 years old, I love this album. Joni is not just for oldies. Her lyrics are great, just like her voice and her music. Anyway, this is not my favourite Mitchell´s album. Submitted by Gene (Buenos Aires, Argentina) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
"Meet me at the quick-lunch stand!" Joni Mitchell set a hi-bar standard with this album that has never been equalled, nor will it ever. These songs are a script for the mind's eye. Close your eyes and you can grasp little movies from every song. A total emotion filled package of beauty through and through. Modern day artists with names like Sarah, Jewel, Sheryl, Melissa, Tori, & Alannis need not apply. You will never be this good. Submitted by mcduckhunter (Stratford, Ia, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Lady of the Canyon Saves a Life This recording has saved my life on many occasions. Never before have I heard such a beautifully soothing peace of art in all my life! Her voice on this record is beautiful and the arrangements are graceful, just sit back close your eyes and relax to the best peace of music ever made.
Let me put it this way, I'm a young man who doesn't always find his way down easy street but when things get to hard, I can always rely on "The Lady of the Canyon" to pick this "Blue Boy" up in a "Big Yellow Taxi" and take me straight to "Morning Morgantown" "For Free". I can't say enough about this album! I love it and will listen to it until die of natural causes.

$10.65 Formed in 1999, this seven piece's 2002 album, 'Phoenix', is an underground phenomenon. With two drummers & four guitars pounding out a relentless, hypnotic & lysergic wall of sound, The Warlocks are a reason to believe again in the redemptive powers of rock & roll. 'The Warlocks are one of the most exciting bands on the planet right now.' - MOJO 'Phoenix is cross-eyed soul - sexy, violent, lovelorn, with shards of guitar noise falling like poison rain on a sun-scorched day.' - SPIN. Birdman. 2002.

The Warlocks includes: Bobby Hecksher (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboards, bass); Jeff Levitz (guitar, lap steel guitar, sitar); JC Rees, Corey Lee Granet (guitar); Hunter Crowley, Danny Hole (drums); Weba (background vocals).
