(2 Customer Reviews)
This 1970 album serves as the final installment in the Kinks' string of '60s masterpieces. In an age when most rockers were capitalizing on the new sound inspired by The Beatles' SGT. PEPPER, Ray Davies and the Kinks were looking back in time for musical inspiration on records like ARTHUR and VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY. Mixing classic rock & roll, blues, American country, and English dance hall music, The Kinks were ahead of and behind the times all at once. LOLA VERSUS POWERMAN AND THE MONEY-GO-ROUND merges some of Davies's highbrow stylistic concepts with the edgier rock & roll of the band's early years on some of the finest songs of the group's career.
The 14-track disc features the irresistible radio hits "Lola" and "Apeman"--the first a confused love song to a transvestite, the second a tongue-in-cheek celebration of primitivism. Both songs have rightfully become part of the rock song canon. Equally impressive are Ray Davies's countryish ballad "Denmark Street," the edgier "Get Back In Line," and music industry satire "Top of the Pops." Guitarist Dave Davies also contributes one of his most beautiful songs, the delicate "Strangers." The Kinks were among the all-time masters of the smartly crafted, idiosyncratic pop song. LOLA VERSUS POWERMAN AND THE MONEY-GO-ROUND is a great collection, ranking just behind their brightest moments in the '60s.

Lola Versus Powerman & The Moneygoround Music Lola Versus Powerman & The Moneygoround Music Lola Versus Powerman & The Moneygoround Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) INFECTIOUS! Okay, I'll admit it. I never was much of a KINKS fan...
There are the FM radio staples that I heard over the years but personally, their music as a whole never held my attention for very long. My biggest reason for buying this CD was to own the studio version of "Lola" (instead of the more popular "Live" version which is usually found on their various compilation albums). Finally getting the studio "Lola" had me believing that my interest in the KINKS ended there...
Boy, was I wrong.
With each listen of "Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround - Part One" I find that this album really grows on you. Each song gets better and better every time I hear them and I now wonder how I could've gone so long without this great recording. After living with the CD for a while now, it gives me that odd feeling it's always been in my collection....it's truly that good!
The studio "Lola" (a popular song from my youth) is still my best reason to buy this CD but the rest of the album contains many treasures as well. The biggest compliment I can give is that this CD stays in my player - which says a lot considering the music collection I have amassed over the years.
Although there is no indication anywhere to be found that this album has been remastered, the sound quality is excellent. Also as a bonus, the lyrics and a short essay is included as well.
So if you're looking for the studio version of "Lola", this the album it came from - but don't be surprised if you find yourself enjoying the rest of the album and becoming a KINKS fan in the process!!

Amazing! I've been a fan of the Kinks for a few years now, but until recently I'd only heard their early records. I came across Lola Versus Powerman & The Moneygoround last week at the local used record store, and I was blown away.
Since then I've been listening to this record everyday. The more I listen to it, the more I love it. I've come to like the slower songs the most, but every song's great. Now, 'Lola...' has become one of my favorite Kinks records. (along with their 1971 album Muswell Hillbillies) I highly recommend this record. It's just too good to pass up. It's easy to imagine the confusion with which this manifesto for the defense of the status quo was received on its release in 1968. The world was in turmoil and the pose of the Street Fighting Man, rebellious and politically aware, was far sexier than the quaint homebody image the Kinks present here. ...

| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Lola Versus Powerman & The Moneygoround
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite ...
