The Kinks: Ray Davies, Dave Davies (vocals, guitar); Pete Quaife, Mick Dalton (bass); Mick Avory (drums). Strictly speaking, the double-album compilation The Kink Kronikles isn't a greatest-hits collection. Covering the years 1966 through 1970, The Kink Kronikles may not be packed with hits -- out of the album's 28 tracks, only nine were hits in the U.K. or the U.S. -- yet it's a definitive overview of this era, which was one of Ray Davies' most productive (and influential) periods. Apart from the hits -- the lazy, sardonic "Sunny Afternoon" and the gorgeous "Waterloo Sunset," and the 1970 comeback hits "Lola" and "Apeman" -- there is a wealth of music that ranks among their very best material that isn't available on any other album. First off, non-LP British hit singles like the music hall raver "Dead End Street" and the wry "Autumn Almanac" are included, as are Dave Davies' two solo hits, "Death of a Clown" and "Suzannah's Still Alive." Then there are the wealth of non-LP singles and B-sides that didn't make the British charts, plus worthy unreleased songs, obscurities like "This Is Where I Belong" and "She's Got Everything," and album tracks that demonstrate another side of the Kinks' musical versatility and Davies' abilities. The key to the success of The Kink Kronikles is how the singles and rarities complement each other and, taken together, present a full portrait. It's the rare compilation that is equally valuable to the collector and to the neophyte fan. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine This set was originally released in 1972, just after The Kinks regained their footing on the charts with "Lola." THE KINKS KRONIKLES still stands as one of the finest examples of a collection that touches on favorites while rescuing otherwise lost or forgotten songs which never made it onto albums or were released when no one was listening. The number and quality of songs that never made it to North American shores is astounding. "Dead End Street" is a case in point--the band even produced a promotional film for this number, but it was never even released in America. Several selections are from the PERCY soundtrack; others are from on assorted EPs and 45s. Ending his essay with "God save the Kinks," music critic John Mendelsohn's notes are the perfect mix of educated listener and unabashed fan. Far from being a catchall, THE KINK KRONIKLES is a great album in its own right. Exhilarating for both the informed follower and the newly arriving curious, this is an essential release.
Rolling Stone (5/25/72, p.64) - "...Ultimately, the Kinks are one of the most underdog groups of all time....That they've made some extraordinary music all along hardly hurts the case...the Kinks are one of the greatest groups of all time..." Goldmine - Very good compilation. Kinks Kink Kronikles Songs Kink Kronikles Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews BEAUTIFUL! This 2-disc set is a collection of selected tracks from The Kinks' best years. The majority of the songs in this package show Ray Davies' dissatisfaction with the world and society he is in, especially the state of modern England. He is the voice of the middle class and the loner, longing for an England that no longer exists. In a time when rock groups were beginning to boldly stand for rebellion and immorality, The Kinks had the courage to stand up for strict morals and a calm family life at the risk of almost certain commercial failure. That is the spirit that these songs capture. This collection is a necessity for any Kinks fan, especially fans who, for one reason or another, don't own the Kinks magnificient albums of 1966-1972. Kinks Kronikles is 5 star TOPS! this is a 5 star compilation here, wonderful material, and includes some hard to find items..... now if one day maybe they put the Great Lost Kinks Album on official cd as well, altho the various German and Japanese bootlegs which are copied from clear vinyl do the task just as well.... hope to find the old double LP on this one someday.... Kink Kronikles
$11.59 Subtitled - Complete Greatest Hits. Finally, a Steve Miller best-of with 'Livin' in the USA', 'Abracadabra!', 'The Joker', 'Jungle Love' & much more. 22 remastered cuts covering his 35 years with Capitol all on one CD! 2003.
Includes liner notes by Joel Selvin. Personnel: Steve Miller (vocals, guitar). Audio Remasterer: Eddy Schreyer. Liner Note Author: Joel Selvin. Photographers: Baron Wolman; Susan McCardle; Kim Smith. At his best, Steve Miller offered great rock & roll thrills -- sleek, insidiously catchy, relentlessly propulsive, effervescent pop gems, songs that were possessed with their own cheerful momentum that proved irresistible and surprisingly enduring. At his best, he made rock & roll that evoked its time but transcended it since its song and studiocraft were precisely executed, and never running longer than needed; like all perfect pop or rock singles, they sound too short since you'd want them to last forever. Unfortunately, Miller at his very best is ten, maybe 12 (and if you're kind, maybe 14) songs, much shorter than the generous Complete Greatest Hits, which ...
