Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Dez (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Wendy Melvoin, J.J. (vocals). Recorded at Sunset Sound & Uptown, Los Angeles, California. With Dirty Mind, Prince had established a wild fusion of funk, rock, new wave, and soul that signaled he was an original, maverick talent, but it failed to win him a large audience. After delivering the sound-alike album, Controversy, Prince revamped his sound and delivered the double album 1999. Where his earlier albums had been a fusion of organic and electronic sounds, 1999 was constructed almost entirely on synthesizers by Prince himself. Naturally, the effect was slightly more mechanical and robotic than his previous work and strongly recalled the electro-funk experiments of several underground funk and hip-hop artists at the time. Prince had also constructed an album dominated by computer funk, but he didn't simply rely on the extended instrumental grooves to carry the album -- he didn't have to when his songwriting was improving by leaps and bounds. The first side of the record contained all of the hit singles, and, unsurprisingly, they were the ones that contained the least amount of electronics. "1999" parties to the apocalypse with a P-Funk groove much tighter than anything George Clinton ever did, "Little Red Corvette" is pure pop, and "Delirious" takes rockabilly riffs into the computer age. After that opening salvo, all the rules go out the window -- "Let's Pretend We're Married" is a salacious extended lust letter, "Free" is an elegiac anthem, "All the Critics Love U in New York" is a vicious attack at hipsters, and "Lady Cab Driver," with its notorious bridge, is the culmination of all of his sexual fantasies. Sure, Prince stretches out a bit too much over the course of 1999, but the result is a stunning display of raw talent, not wallowing indulgence. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine With the release of this seminal double-album, Prince evolves from the minimalist synth-pop that powered such discs as DIRTY MIND and CONTROVERSY into the pop genius that defined such quirky masterpieces as PURPLE RAIN and SIGN OF THE TIMES. Were it only for the hits--the loopy bounce of "Delirious," the moody slide of "Little Red Corvette," and the irresistible title track (only Prince could have written the ultimate dance song for the turn of the millennium 18 years before the fact)--1999 would be essential. These tracks are as perfect as they are familiar from incessant radio play. The rest of 1999 holds up to the radio hits. Loose, nasty grooves like "D.M.S.R." and "Automatic" are interspersed with the propulsive shuffle of "Let's Pretend We're Married" and the soulful, psychedelic pulse of "Something In The Water." This is not average dance music. Prince's hybrid of rich, trippy atmospherics, '80s synth-y keyboard sounds, lush, asymmetrical harmonies, elements of rock guitar, soulful singing, and strong songwriting--all rolled together with beats--weaves dark, sexual energy into ebullient boogie anthems. 1999 is one of the definitive pop music documents of the '80s.

Breakout album This is the album that pushed the Purple One into the spot light! With rock tracks like "Little Red Corvette" and idiosyncratic funk numbers like "1999" were bound to be hits for the artist. Prince was a bonafied star with 1999! Other favorites include "Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) and "D.M.S.R" Submitted by Dillon (Columbus, Ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Personnel includes: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Lisa Coleman (keyboards, background vocals); Dr. Fink (keyboards); Bobby Z (drums). Engineers: Mic Guzanski, Ross Pallone, Bob Mockler. Controversy continues in the same vein of new wave-tinged funk on Dirty Mind, emphasizing Prince's fascination with synthesizers and synthesizing disparate pop music genres. It is also more ambitious than its predecessor, attempting to tackle social protest ("Controversy," "Ronnie, Talk to Russia," "Annie Christian") along with sex songs ("Jack U Off," "Sexuality"), and it tries ...
| | Prince Purple Rain CD (1984) SDTK
1999
$9.49 Prince & The Revolution: Prince (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Wendy Melvoin (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Matt "Dr." Fink (vocals, keyboards); Brown Mark (vocals, bass); Bobby Z (percussion). Additional personnel: Apollonia (vocals); Novi Novog (violin, viola); David Coleman, Suzie Katayama (cello). Engineers include: Susan Rogers, Peggy Mac, David Riukin. Prince designed Purple Rain as the project that would make him a superstar, and, surprisingly, that is exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, Purple Rain finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superbly crafted songs. Even its best-known songs don't tread conventional territory: the bass-less "When Doves Cry" is an eerie, spare neo-psychedelic masterpiece; "Let's Go Crazy" is a furious blend of metallic guitars, Stonesy riffs, and a hard funk backbeat; the anthemic title track is a majestic ballad filled with brilliant guitar flourishes. Although Prince's songwriting ...

(saxophone); Jonathan Melvoin (tambourine, background vocals); Brad Marsh (tambourine); Tim Barr, Annette Atkinson (bass); Sheila E. (drums); Susannah, Taj (backing vocals). Engineers include: David Leonard, Peggy Mac, David Tickle. Purple Rain made Prince sound like he could do anything, but it still didn't prepare even his most fervent fans for the insular psychedelia of Around the World in a Day. Prince had made his interior world sound fascinating and utopian on Purple Rain, but Around the World in a Day is filled with cryptic religious imagery, bizarre ...

| | Oneida Happy New Year CD (2006)
1999
$12.19 Audio Mixers: Nicolas Vernhes; Barry London. Recording information: Last Gasp Studios, Brooklyn, NY; Old South Church, Boston, MA; Rare Book Room, Brooklyn, NY; The Sunset Grill, Brooklyn, NY. Unknown Contributor Roles: Busy Gangnes; Erica Fletcher; Shahin Motia; Philip Manley; Fred Wallace; Brad Truax; Emily Manzo; Stephanie Rabins. A fearless sense of experimentation has always been at the core of Oneida's approach, but their 2006 album HAPPY NEW YEAR found the band returning to the more nuanced sonic aesthetic first explored on 2005's THE WEDDING. Album opener "Distress" is driven by a medieval-sounding folk melody enhanced by a lovely chanted male/female vocal; the tripped-out singing that marks "Reckoning" is brought back to earth by gentle acoustic guitar lines; and "Busy Little Bee" even features a banjo. Oneida has always been a classic rock band at heart, though, albeit one with a penchant for squalls of psychedelic noise and stabbing keyboard hooks, and there's no shortage of either here. The live show favorite "Up With People" is of particular note, suggesting what Prince might sound like if he was backed by Faust. While HAPPY NEW YEAR doesn't necessarily raise the stakes on Oneida's artistry--they're pretty high by this point anyway--it's a solid addition to an already remarkable catalog. Reflecting the cyclical nature of earth and life itself, Oneida's eighth full-length album, Happy New Year, presents ideas of death and rebirth, and the continuity, and yet tenuousness, of existence. It's a poetic work of circling guitars and melodic phrases and vocal lines repeating and layered like monastic chants. The opener, "Distress," is comprised of a four-line phrase about the fleeting nature of beauty ("So fades the lovely blooming flower/Frail, smiling solace of an hour/So soon our transient comfort flies/And pleasure only blooms to die"), with modal harmonies and haunting, sparse background music, while the dark musings of "The Misfit" explore the notion of evil and perfidiousness, referencing perhaps the character in Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find." But the band isn't trying to present an image of hopelessness, of a hell, or even a limbo from which you can never escape. Rather, they seem to be exploring the realm of purgatory, where, though it may require a great deal of time and sacrifice, there is hope of redemption. Both "Up with People" ...
