Opening with "Legal Tender," a paean to counterfeiting, WHAMMY is the B-52s' return to form after the previous year's David Byrne-led detour into more experimental territory (MESOPOTAMIA). Comprising a richer and fuller sound without compromising on the band's economy of sound, WHAMMY is an enjoyable work.

Highlights include the aural personal ad "Song for a Future Generation," the rockin' legume tune "Butterbean," and the sci-fi "Moon 83" (replacing Yoko Ono's "Don't Worry" on this reissue). The album veers into the ridiculous-even by B-52s standards-on "Big Bird," a track about (what else?) a big bird flying over the B-52s' house. This one actually features some cool horn sounds by guests Ralph Carney and David Buck. The closing "Work that Skirt" is a workmanlike instrumental that showcases some great percussion programming. An '80s album through and through, WHAMMY is one worth investigating.

Live Recording

Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas in December 1982.

The B-52s: Fred Schneider, Cindy Wilson, Kate Pierson (vocals); Keith Strickland (guitar, keyboards, drums); Ricky Wilson (guitar, bass).

Additional personnel: Ralph Carney (saxophone); David Buck (trumpet).

4 stars Hot Stuff!!!!!!!!!!
Another great B-52's cd, finally found this on line and wow, the memories are just as fresh as when I first heard the songs over 20 years ago. This group just knows how to make a party happen whether you get the chance to see them live or just puttin on these great tracks from WHAMMY. This group is not through yet! They took on the new electronics wave and this was one of the best examples during the 80's. Legal Tender, Queen of Las Vegas, Song for a future generation, Butterbean, Trism, Whammy Kiss, and Big bird, but its the "Work that Skirt" instrumental where you get to meet the genius in Keith Strickland and all he and Ricky Wilson have added to the brillance of this over the top talented band. This is just another example of some of the best that came out of the 80's music.

1 star NOT THE REAL ALBUM I BOUGHT IN THE 80'S~
My gripe... They replaced "Don't Worry" with a b-side rariety called Moon 83! With all the space on the cd, why didn't they just add it as a bouns track?

Big Sur
Bobby Darin Big Sur CD  (2004)

Whammy!
CD $11.79  4.3 stars Audio Samples
The period in the late 1960s during which Bobby Darin turned to a sort of vague folk-rock style has always been difficult to grasp. In part, that's because some of the recordings (particularly those on his own Direction label) have been difficult to find, whether on the original vinyl or via reissue; in part, that's because his folk-rock material was interspersed with other releases during the same era in which he recorded in much different styles. Songs From Big Sur does collectors and Darin fans a favor by assembling much of his more obscure folk-rock-ish 1965-70 material in one place, largely taken from his 1968-70 Direction releases (both on LP and 45), although there are also a couple of little-known Atlantic singles. Best of all, from the hardcore Darin fanatic's viewpoint, there are also eight previously unreleased tracks, as well as two done for Atlantic that were not released at the time they were cut. So, does it add up to a major chapter of Darin's discography? Not really, though it was an interesting one. It was a time where Darin was moving to more personal and socially conscious songs, and by including nothing but Darin compositions (no "If I Were a Carpenter" here), this CD represents that facet of his work well. Musically, however, Darin's brand of folk-rock was mild, and this material in particular was rather unimpressive, if heartfelt in its sentiment. At times, too, his more ambitious reflections could be awkward in their bluntness, sounding a little like a man from the older generation who was hitching a ride with the changing times just a little too late. Not that it counts as a strike against what he was doing, but not all of this was conventional folk-rock by any ...
Over And Over
88 Over And Over CD  (2005)

Whammy!
CD $11.45  Audio Samples
L.A. power pop/rock never dies, it seems; it just slightly transmogrifies. So if the line of descent from Love to the Knack to Jellyfish to the 88 is more indirect and generalized than specific, the 88 are nonetheless heirs to a tradition, one that the band's sophomore album does little to disrupt. Over and Over starts off with a clipped riff followed by Keith Slettedahl's creamy/dreamy (and slight ghost of Marc Bolan) vocals, and by the time the band kicks in fully on "Hide Another Mistake," the band's many core strengths and unavoidable weakness -- simply put, the 88 bring terribly little new to the table -- are clear. Song for song, Over and Over is the bubblegum chewed because it's so familiar rather than because it's strikingly new: post-Beatles melodies here, glam swagger there, piano-led jauntiness courtesy of Adam Merrin everywhere (the unspoken roots of the band might actually be early Squeeze). That said, the members of the 88 are absolutely crackerjack at what they do, whether it's the big beat stomp and wailed vocal break on "All 'Cause of You" or the steady build in intensity of "Battle Scar," each verse and chorus seeming more powerful than the previous. Ethan Allen's production and engineering might just be the secret weapon throughout -- he makes the rhythm section of Carlos Torres and Mark Vasapolli sound massive while never drowning out Merrin's piano at the same time. The resultant balance of sound (and volume) makes for an immediately enjoyable listen, while the occasional curve balls add just enough variety as well -- there are the unexpected percussion breaks on "Nobody Cares"; the near-epic wallop and slow, measured stomp of "Bowls"; the tender acoustic guitar and vocals of "You Belong to Me." Over and Over won't surprise anyone -- but it entertains start to finish, flat out. ~ Ned Raggett The 88Over and Over(EMK)With their second album, Over and Over, The 88 refute the myth that art and the three-and-a-half-minute pop song can't get along. While the new record shares the same rollicking spirit as its predecessor, Kind of Light, it also marks a leap forward for the Los Angeles-based quintet. The buoyant melodies and general jollity that characterized album one infuse all 12 tracks of their sophomore release, only this time with an expanded sound, a result, no doubt, of the group's artistic growth and constant gigging. Since Light debuted in early 2003, the band have been playing practically nonstop throughout their native L.A., with tour dates throughout the United States and Canada.Once word of The 88's irrepressible harmonies and hopping pianos - not to mention Keith Slettedahl's warm, saturated strains - began to spread among club-goers, Light slowly found its way to radio DJs and rock ...
